My mom used to do this with leftovers when we were kids...she did this exact recipe only she layered, beef, mashed potatoes, spinach, cheese and who know what else. She would do this often, but it was always different, she used pie crusts instead of biscuits. Since we never knew what was in these pies; we called it, pie surprise.
Why would anyone give a thumbs down to a simply wonderful person sharing a recipe? If you don’t like meat pies, go on to another video Or let her know that you don’t like meat pies and tell her of a recipe that you would like for her to share with you. I’m sure that she has a lot of other delicious recipes. I’m 72 and still like trying new recipes and sharing my “old favorites”.
Thank you Cynthia, Your comment is very nice. I guess there are just some people out there who enjoy spreading negativity. I get by concentrating on the positivity. On my channel I get much more positive feedback than negative. I appreciate people like you who choose to be part of my RU-vid family.
I'm 72 as well & I'm always looking for new things to cook! This recipe hits the spot! There are just some miserable people out there that do nothing but find fault, love to complain & be nasty instead of zipping the lip & moving on!
They feel inadequate so making others feel bad makes them feel better....I love this recipe. I've made hand pies, freeze them and seal and meal them for hubby at work.
i dont mean to be so off topic but does any of you know of a way to get back into an instagram account? I was stupid lost my password. I would love any help you can give me!
@Wesson Killian Thanks for your reply. I found the site through google and Im trying it out now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Pillsbury cinnamon rolls rolled out like she did then wrapped around sausage links is one of my grandkids favorite I give them a dipping cup with warm syrup and a pat of butter on top..they go nuts for them
I made them earlier today for my five sons and my wife for lunch. I made 24 in total (basically I tripled the recipe). I added beef concentrate and egg washed the pastry and put a little Kosher salt on top. My family loved them. It was perfect for a chilly afternoon. Next time, I think I’ll add some bell pepper. Thank you again for sharing your recipe with all of us. I’ve subscribed and am looking forward to what else you have in store for us.
I made almost the same thing with leftover turkey after thanksgiving, using the turkey gravy with my meat and veg mix AND serving them topped with gravy - my wife insisted that I make more the following week! I found that it got messy with the gravy and meat mix inside, so the second time around I chilled the filling before making the pies, which solidified the gravy to a large extent and made the process neater and easier. Just followed the instructions on the can of biscuits to bake.
I wonder if you kneed the dough, add alittle flour , cause that dough is a little sticky, they won’t come out to floured . You see all that flour . And you taste flour. I mean she s got a good idea and add a little water so the filling won’t be dry . Wa la
Thank you SO MUCH for the recipe! My husband and I are elderly and disabled. The food pantry was offering ground beef and biscuits! I wanted something good and it looks like this will be delicious! Starting RIGHT NOW!! THANK YOU!!!
Hi Linda, that's wonderful. This little recipe hack reminds a lot of people of recipes from various parts of the world. Latin people say it is an Empanada. Italians called them Calzones and I have heard them called Runza and Pasties. It just depends on where you're from. Everybody has a different stuffing. But they're always good. I hope you like them. Thank you for your nice comment.
Did Philly cheesesteak model: diced onion, green pepper & crimini with ground chuck. Add 1:1 water and concentrate of au jus. A few shakes of Worcestershire as needed. Bit of flour to tighten. Dashes garlic powder, cayenne, salt & ground pepper to taste. Drain fat. Insert plenty of slivered provolone in pocket to fit. Egg wash outside and bake to gold... 'bout 15 min. Gorgeous sheen from egg wash. Gooey, cheesy, beefy, philly goodness!! Using 1 lb meat, decent leftover amount. Will be used in 2 cup pyrex with mash on top, then shredded jack until golden for 1 good meal.
Fortuitously, I stumbled across your recipe using biscuit dough. I didn't feel like making it from scratch for my favorite meat pie recipe. It worked out GREAT and saved a LOT of time. The sweetness of the Grands complemented the filling perfectly. Thanks for sharing!
I ate some thing like this in the Miami Airport about 6-7 yrs ago. It was like a little fastfood kiosk. I think it was a small chain of restaurants. The spokesperson, (i guess i can say that) was this latin american lady. I saw her on one of those morning shows one on telemundo or something like that. Anyhow, those empanadas were super delicious. Don't know if they're cuban, venezuelan or colombian. Now i know how to make them going to try it
@@gmax985 We had a guy in East Chicago go around to the different bars selling a Puerto Rican version of these, done in a deep fryer, ... He would charge $1.00 each one, my wife, & I loved them, ... I have always wanted to make something like these at home, now I can, ... the ones he sold were made with 5 different fillings, ... beef, pork, chicken, cheese, & jalapeño, man, you talk about melt in your mouth, goes great with beer, mixed drink, milk, coffee, or even KoolAid, ... whatever, ... a definitive go to 3 piece meal for a light dinner, or you could make sides of mashed taters/French fries, again, whatever you would want to add as this is such a perfect all around type of snack or a full sized meal, ... just depends on the portions, I would s’pose, ...
@@gmax985 Empanadas are made in different forms all over the world. Different seasonings and meat or veggies and maybe even different doughs and shapes and they're called something different. In the end, whatever they're called, they're all meat pies and they're all pretty damn good! 👍🤗
These are basically Cornish Pasties. What you call biscuits we call scones which can be sweet or savoury. Biscuits for us are what you call cookies so I did a double take when I saw this video title! In England we would use shortcrust pastry. Shortcrust pastry recipe is half fat to flour, and half water to fat. For instance 8oz flour, 4oz butter, 2oz water. Rub the fat into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs then add the water and mix to a dough. Weighing the water is the secret! We’d also dampen the pastry edge before folding over the edges to seal and brush the whole pasty with beaten egg before baking.
Hi Mama Kim, I have heard of Cornish Pasties. These little meat pies have a version all over the world. In Germany and Russia they are called Runzas. In the Latin culture they are called Empanadas. Even Italians have their own version which includes marinara sauce, cheese, veggies, sausage and pepperoni. They call them Calzones. We are all connected through food!
I lived on meat pies traveling in New Zealand a few years back. They put almost anything in them- curries, various asian dishes, of course lots of lamb. I swore I was going to start making them , but never did so yet. Good video
This is such a great idea! I have now made them with ham and swiss cheese, shrimp and sweet peppers, and mexican spicy beef. The choices are endless! Thank you!!
Hi Candye, This little meat pie recipe seems to be my most popular recipe. I guess its the simplicity of these tasty little pies. Thanks for stopping by!
These are very common in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I like your idea of using canned biscuits! The Yoopers call these Pasties. They are delicious
@@jtenrec1 my aunt started a business making those from Ireland. BJ Bulls in California hers was. HER son opened BJ. Bulls In Nevada. People love pasyies!!
Love this. I have some canned biscuits and might try this tonight or tomorrow. P.S.. This would work great with italian filling for calzones, too, or with chicken inside.
Okay, I'm done with the 3 recipes of pie dough 4 lbs of roast beef, and veggies, 2 day project that I have done since 1970.!!!! I'm from the UP of Michigan where there is a strong Finnish ancestry, my DH included. Never heard of Pasties until we got married, What a project. THANKS, ROSIE, I'M FREE. I bet DH won't even notice. He's kinda dense that way.
I’m with you Girl! My husband is from Michigan, he loves pasties but I’m not very good making them. I’m going to try this recipe, it’s fast and simple. I hope my husband likes it. 👍🏻😃
At my age (77) and the fact there is just 'me' (and 18 cats...mostly outside...they wander here & never leave), the idea of using biscuits is an excellent idea. I especially like the fact that they are freezeable. Tk u for sharing. Judy
We are 80 and have one inside cat but 5 outside spayed, neutered, done this for 20 years I!! have been wanting to make a pot pie,I will try this !! freezable is great !!
I have done that frequently using different fillings. Also try adding chopped pecans/walnuts, sometimes shredded coconut. Brush with melted butter & brown sugar, bake & enjoy.
Whipped cream cheese and marshmallow cream also work great. Kinda like cheese danish. Canned pie filling is a bit runny, but preserves also work great.
@@francesjolly5106 I've made lots of pasties, but not with this recipe. I've always made pie dough for the wrapper, but this looks much easier and quite tasty. This looks like a good recipe. I would add some turnip with the potato and carrot just 'cuz I always do. I like root vegies. ;-)
Rosie, all I can say is YUMMY! I made up a batch of these, browned a few, poured an ice cold brewsky, and tore into them! Rosie's pies and a frosty beer, doesn't get any better than that! Well a honey bunny to help me eat these tasty treats, but that's another video!
@@why-even-try-brotendo sincerest thanks. Just have a doubt about canned biscuits today, my mom could make dinner to dessert from them. You renewed my faith.
Delicious! I added some frozen peas to the pie before putting them in the oven. Worked great, tasted even better than I tho't it would. These are wonderful for a single person who sometimes doesn't feel like cooking and they're a lot better than processed food. Thanks ❣🇨🇱
@@MissAstorDancer I mixed some better then bullion "beef" into the cooked mea t,went heavy with carrots and onion, tomato paste with a lot hot sauce then I mixed in left over garlic mashed potatoes my neighbor gave me Turned into kinda like a mix between sloppy joes in its own bun,lol I made 8 and eat them all myself in dinner then lunch and finally dinner again! Thank you again
I used this biscuit recipe sprinkled with sugar to make baked cherry turnovers. For the filling I used frozen cherries thawed and low-boiled them with Splenda brown sugar, cornstarch and almond extract. Then I baked them at 375° for 15 mins. Thanks for the idea! I'll try the meat pies sometime.
Reminds me of the Cornish Pastys my mother and I would have at this British shop in her neighborhood. I miss them both, as they are both gone. I will make these. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Hi Termo Dog, Cheese is wonderful, but SSSomebody in my house doesn't like cheese. Ahem...he shall remain nameless. lol Great idea. Thanks for stopping by!
Hi Lisa, This is one of my most popular recipes. It's really funny, how a lot of people say it reminds them of something from their childhood. Thanks for watching!
I got excited when I saw her peel the paper off the biscuit can and bang it on the counter to pop it open. Oh that brought back memories from my childhood. I knew then this was going to be a winner recipe!
I have the same air fryer, and I am going to make some of these... My hubby is going to LOVE those... Thank you so very much for sharing your cooking ideas with all us viewers.
Cheryl, you are so sweet. These little meat pies seem to intrigue so many people. I have people tell me that their great grandma from some European country made something similar. It seems that many countries have a version of the meat pie. Latin countries call it Empanadas and in parts of the U.S. they are called Pasties. So interesting. Thank you for the visit!
Look at those empanadas! Beautiful! Also, you are very clever. I have found if you want to get suggestions on the Internet don't ask for them, just tell how you do something and the busybodies come out of the woodwork with their suggestions. But suggestions in YT are comments and you game the YT algorithms. As I said, clever! :D
U WON'T BE SORRY! ~ IF U HAVE HUNGRY PEOPLE W/ YOU~ LIKE I DO! (you'll LUV IT!) ~ THIS IS EVEN COMFORT FOOD!! (ONLY BETTER THAN MAC & CHEESE) and i make THAT TOO Homemade
Update: They turned out so good!! I made several varieties (different spices, cheese, ...). It took me much longer than 5-10 to get the potatoes & carrots soft after adding them in and they were diced tiny. It’s been 14 minutes & I’m still waiting. Next time I’ll cook them first.
Glad to here you had success. Cook times always can vary depending on the thickness of the pan, how high the flame is and weather or not you cover the pan. Thank you for sharing your update. Stay safe and healthy !
One of my favorites that I haven't made in a long time from my young and broke days! As others have mentioned a little bit of water or broth in the filling makes some gravy. I'll usually brush them with an egg wash as well before baking. Thanks for sharing.
@luisa Zeledon I had the same thought. Drain the fat, before adding the flavors. Even after draining the fat, there will still be enough fat so make the spices "bloom," rather than having all that flavor go down the drain.
Love it....... I have one suggestion. I cook my ground beef first, separately, and drain it, the reason is.... I don't want to drain off all the flavors of my other ingredients onion spices, etc with the grease, just the grease from the 80/20. I then add the cooked onion and garlic and all the other stuff into the drained ground beef. I do this with all my cooking of things with ground beef. Peace and Grace to all and stay safe......
Hi Speedy, Yes there were a couple of things that I forgot to do on this recipe. They could have used an egg wash too. When I'm trying to film and get different angles, it's kinda easy to forget to do something. Overall these little pies come out tasty. Thank you for the visit!

Beautiful... you bake it like an Italian calzone. In Latin America we deep fry them. We use olives and rehydrated raisins. We make them with Chicken, beef, sometimes shrimp. Depends on the country.
@@maryrichardson5841 :you soak them in water before you use them. So I would soak them before mixing it with the meat prior to baking. Do not cook them in the meat. Just add prior to baking. It adds a little sweetness when you bite into it.
They look delicious & you can do so much with those Grands. I am going to give it a try but I will use a Food Saver to vacuum, seal & freeze. They'll last even longer. Yum!
Hi Rosa! Thank you for sharing your card with me the other day. I love why you started your channel and have already watched a few videos. It's wholesome and your boys are lucky to have you. I wish your channel much success and I look forward to seeing more videos from you
Wonderful, Yes I freeze a lot of things. My son really liked these. The reheat time is an approximate. Cooking times my vary, because everybody's oven might differ, but it does work and they can be enjoyed later. Thanks so much for the visit!
Yum and they look so good. I've made them with regular flour dough and they were called Runza's. They're kind've from all over the world I think. My Dad grew up with them in Russia!
Hi friend, I'm so glad. Hope you try it and you like it. Most people think it's pretty easy. Also, if you need to drain the grease from your meat, do it before you add the seasoning. I goofed up on that part. Either way, it still comes out great. Good luck!
Thank you, I'm going to make these. Since my egg and milk allergy it's been so hard to find ready made things I can have and these look so much yummier than the steak and potato pies I currently stock my freezer with! My family will love them!
Thank you Rosie I always wanted to make these and loved getting them when some of the truckstops owned by mom and pops I visited while I was over the road sooo tasty
Not sure how I stumbled upon this video and channel but this is the first video I watch and I love ❤️ it! I need to try this sometime, thanks for sharing 😁👍🏽
Hi noe, 1st of all, welcome to my channel. I appreciate you watching. This is my most popular video. There's something about it that reminds people of their childhood. It seems to resignate in various cultures. I hear them being called pasty's, empanadas, and even Runza. It just depends on where you are from. It's simple yet tasty, and I guess many cultures have a similar recipe. TFW!
I'v been making these since the 70's. Raised 4 boys, so used this to use up all those little bits of left overs in the fridge. Any meats, vegies left I would just chop up to small diced. Cook some rice for filler, season. Take a biscuit, separate in half. Then with my thumbs I would flatten out. Fill, add shredded cheese, close and bake. Make a little sauce or ketchup and they never lasted long.
Hi Jim, A lot of people seem to have fond memories of these pies. There are a lot of variations from many parts of the world. I have had folks from across the pond call them Pasties, Runzas and Bierocks. I find that so interesting. We are all united through food! You sound like a great Father. Thanks for stopping by!

My family and I loved the empanadas! They were delicious. I took one of your viewers suggestions and brushed egg wash on rye empeñadas before baking them. I also added a diced hard boiled egg to the mix. Again, mighty tasty👍🏽
Wow looks amazing! I made hand pies many years ago for the hubby to take as a lunch for work. Also made chicken hand pies as well. His co-workers were jealous looking at their bologna sandwiches . The steak and veggie pies really made his day. I did make a bunch for his buddy's one week and cupcakes lol . Big Mistake lol they wanted it every week called me the cupcake wife lol.
I loved reading your comment. Yes, I am sure your hubby's co-workers can get used to treats quite easily. I chuckled when you said that they looked at their bologna sandwiches. I am sure your hubby really appreciates his cupcake wife. lol Thank you so much for the visit!
I used to make special lunches every day for my hubby too... the guys in the lunchroom were always jealous. So he started having the guys over for sports night, basketballs games, and I would cook and bake for them. They all loved it. Then my husband left me for someone 10 years younger. Years later, he contacted me to tell me she could not cook! LOL hahahaha Karma my friend! 😜
Delicious!! Have done something similar with a Cuban touch (spices) with grocery store puff pastry. I'm going to make your recipe cause it looks fantastic. Thanks for sharing. ✌💚
Ive fallen in love with savory pies, especially ones with meat in them, when i first visited the UK (im originally from Kuwait) and this recipe looks delicious, i may have to try this out. Thank you for sharing
Hi Naser, This little recipe is so simple and seems to strike a chord with a lot of people. I think it's simplicity yet it's savory taste has made it very popular for my channel. It also seems to remind a lot of people of something from their childhood. I have had people from Europe tell me that they were called Runza. Hispanics call them Empanadas, and in England they were called Cornish pasties. I have learned a lot about little meat pies. Lol Thank you for visiting my channel.
Happy Saturday Rosie! Yummers! Looks delicious!! Love the hack using canned biscuits!! I use to freeze my meat and food in zip lock bags and foil until I bought a vacuum food saver and it changed my life! My meats and foods stay fresh as the day I freeze them and the storage bags help keep the food from forming ice crystals or from any air from getting inside. Plus, I can buy meat in family sizes and just vacuum seal them for the freezer! Just sharing! Great video and recipe. Sending Cali love. XOXO :)
Hi Alex, I always have people from all over, speak of these little pies. I've heard them called Runza and Empanadas. Good food translates to all languages. I think it's such a sweet gesture for you to surprise your husband with a nice memory from his past.
Great idea using canned biscuits! Makes it faster and easier to make. I love meat pies or empanadas of various kinds. I will have to try this. I use the same technique with the biscuits to make pigs in the blanket with hotdog, cheese, and jalapenos if you want those. Thank you for sharing. ♥️
Hi Gail, It seems that every culture has a different name for "meat pies." I believe in Russia they are called runza. They are also called Cornish pasties in the United Kingdom. The bottom line, we can call them tasty. lol Thanks for paying me a visit!
Interesting! About using frozen biscuit dough- has anybody tried this, for Cornish pasties/ Jamaican patties/ burritos, etc? (Shelf life in the freezer, is impressive-too! Good vid! More-please!
These turned out fantastic. My husband has to have gluten free biscuits and I bought 1-2-3 Gluten Free Southern Biscuit mix and used those and they were great. If you make them GF, you'll want to spray the tops lightly with olive oil, or brush with oil or egg white to get a nice brown shade. But the filling is the star. Also, I made one batch using ground chicken with 5-spice seasoning and that was great too. Thank for a fun and simple recipe.
I am so happy to hear that you liked them. Yes, I should have brushed them with an egg wash. It was an oversight on my part, but they still came out good. Thank you for sharing your success !
