It's June 22nd 2001, The Fast and the Furious has just hit the theaters. You're somewhere in the neighborhood of 10 years old with a burning passion
for hot wheels toys. You see this new and exciting movie come out and you're begging your parents to take you to go see it. After some persuasion, you
find yourself sitting front row watching one of the most iconic movies of all time. This is history, and now you're a part of it. All of a sudden, you
see this car that you or anyone you know has never heard of. A 1994 Toyota Supra. This is more than likely the first time in your life that
you've seen this car and instantly you fall in love with it. The Fast and furious franchise was the spark that lit the fire for your love of any and
everything automotive so you spend the next 10-20 years working your ass off until FINALLY, you are able to afford the dream car that you fell in love
with many years ago, a Mark IV Supra. But this isn't any Supra, this one is yours. You've spent hundreds of thousands of dollars building and
modifying your dream car to perfection, until one day you drop it off at a shop to have something done to it, only to be met with a viral video of your
car being absolutely destroyed by the shop that you trusted with it. That is exactly what happened with this 1997 15th anniversary, limited edition Toyota Supra.

Unforuntatly its not as simple as that. The owners insurance company will have to pay out and then they will sue the fuck out of drivers auto insurance to subrogate the damages, but in colorado, and in most states, a business owners policy does not cover automobiles. even mechanic shops. Only things that would normally be covered under a property policy. That being said this is a cut and dry case and a judge will immidiatly side in favor of the subrogation, but its still going to be a headache for the owner. They'll spend weeks, if not months low-balling settlement offers as the court date approaches. So fucking glad I got out of that blood-sucking industry.
@thatsicksubiegt

@@pokeslim I'm assuming its covered. In California, that would be covered cause "performance" shops have an additional premium for this exact situation not using OE parts causing this.

@NaruSanavai the mileage puts it in the $100k+ range. Less than 8,000 USDM turbo MKIV Supras were made from 1993 to 1998. That makes it extremely expensive. Same as any old school camaros, corvettes, chevelles, grand nationals etc. All command a high price today because people want them and they are rare, and oem parts are impossible to find.

Supra owner here. The factory rear end is technically an LSD but its a Torsen LSD. From memory, it acts like an LSD under cornering only sending more torque to the wheel with the most traction. This can be deadly in a high power vehicle the moment both rear wheels lose traction it acts like an open diff where you get the classic fish-tail of doom considering the diff will constantly send all the torque back and forth between both rear wheels. You'll get a much better definition if you google Torsen Differential but this is just a super dumb down version thats kind of correct kind of not without going into way too much detail. I've switched to the OS Giken superlock clutch type center in my car due to the fear of this happening to me.

This story actually reminds of a similar situation 1 of my friends was He always(since he was a kid,he's 27 now) liked the Toyota MR2 (mk3) and he finally found one in good and working condition from a garage but he purchased the car and decided to leave it in the previous owner shop because he didn't want to deal with his wife complaints and would bring home later after he talked his wife in,so after telling me he got the car and left it there i immediately told him to take the car and bring it home (i had 0 experience with that shop and don't know the guy so it's not like i had any sort of past with it,it was just me not trusting others with my stuff) because it's better to just having to hear his wife nagging for month rather than having his car crushed because the previous owner decided to take it for a spin and he thought i was being a little bit dramatic,2-4 weeks later the previous owner decided to take the car for a spin and he totaled it,after that his wife learned about it so he got the best of both worlds

Having lived there a few years, I never heard of this happening… however in Michigan back in 2020, an employee got behind the wheel of a manual trans jeep to pull it in to dealership for an oil change. Tech couldn’t drive manual and ended up killing his coworker with the Jeep. The jeep owner was sued by family of the tech that died. Not the dealership & not the tech that was driving. The dealership finally stepped up to take care of the family but that’s an example of how laws vary state to state.

Having worked in a shop that did a lot of high horse power cars, both modern (1100whp Ford Gt, did 252mph at the Mojave Mile) and classic (850whp 68 Camaro) and everything in between, shop is 100% liable. We carried 5 million in insurance in case something happened to a car. from the video there, it looks like he moved to pass and goosed it. When the boost came on, it broke traction and he couldn't recover. You can see the exhaust puff before the tire let loose and the spin begins. As it is very unlikely you could find another Anniversary car, it would likely just be a cash payout from the shops insurance, assuming they have enough coverage.

For years I've given this advice for a car for new drivers. Get as big, heavy and slow a car as you can. Because, they WILL wreck it. And there's nothing that helps survival than large crush zones and lots of steel. And if they are in an 85 Olds Custom Cruiser, they will likely walk away from the wreck. If they are in a Mustang or Camaro, they will be in trouble. And if they are in a Smartcar you may as well shrink-wrap the remains and just bury it in one piece.

I grew up in New Zealand so we got them from new. As he passes the car you can see from the smoke coming out of the exhaust that he was on boost and planted his foot. The rear broke traction and he lost it. When ever we modified cars there is always an aftermarket ECU involved. Most aftermarket ECUs have a built in maintenance/limit mode/service mode which limits the amount of revs the engine can do to prevent these sorts of things happening. How ever, we don’t know what the car was in for or the work being carried out. After this happened a few times many years ago businesses put staff through high powered car training to help prevent this. I've been racing time attack for about five years, and I'm very familiar with "scary-fast" vehicles and what they tend to act like. I just hope the owners doesn’t get screwed over. I wish to know if the vehicle had a dash cam and or GPS tracking. This will help to find out some more information; Speed driven and so on. I’m sure there will be more to follow once all the legal and insurance stuff is figured out.

I would hope that there was a dashcam. Would definitely give us more insight on what happened.

The owner has insurance, hopefully it’s good insurance. If so he’ll have a check next week.

A lot of shops turn off the dash cam when they see a car has one, has happened to mine before

That would be a very good idea. But they need to be aware if they take it on the highway and try to merge, or limiter can give them just enough power for that.

The 2 owners of the shop that does all my work to my MKIV both have modified MKIV's so I trust them not to crash my Supra since they are the only people other than me that I allow to drive it.

Here in SA, workshops etc are very quick to place a notice on their premises saying that the car is left there at the owner's risk. There's been many incidents where vehicles are "test driven" and "abused" by car dealerships/ workshops etc who don't accept any responsibility/ liability for any damages etc leaving the poor owners in disbelief. Personally I had an incident where one morning i dropped off my car for it's very first service at the dealership where I purchased the vehicle new, they came fetched me in the evening to go collect my vehicle however when we arrived at the dealership I did not see the car parked out front, etc. The service manager says "oh no man it's parked at the back". So I walk to the rear parking while he tries to find the keys, he comes back and asks another dealership employee go find the keys and tries to distract me by telling me about the work completed on the car etc and we're both standing outback and clearly my car is nowhere to be seen, hence they cannot locate the keys. The service manager now panicking says "Sir i think it's still in the wash area" however, some low level worker there took the keys, left the dealership, went fetched his girlfriend, went shopping etc and tried to sneak the vehicle back without anyone noticing but too bad for them as I alerted my tracking company who located the car being driven about 30km away from the dealership. When they stopped the vehicle, the girlfriend was driving and she did not have a driver's license, ruined the clutch and the gearbox, etc. The service manager drove me there and boy was I seriously pissed that day! Again they tried to indicate I left the vehicle there at my own risk etc, however they could not get out of this one. The matter dragged on in court and they had to accept the liability for the damages etc overall. Once the car was repaired and as good as new again I immediately traded it in for another new vehicle. Never went back to that dealership and neither has any of my friends/family etc. That dealership took some serious heat from the vehicle manufacture and lost the contract where they supplied my company's vehicle fleet with new vehicles.

There’s no way in hell that shop can cover that up as “shit happens” they are 100,000,000,000% at fault for this and they should go out of business in order to pay him back for that car. Absolutely outrageous!

In a left turn lane, speeds up to pass the filming car, once he's clear he smashes the gas (as seen by the exhaust and tires spinning) which wasn't necessary to do for a test drive so I highly doubt he was following traffic laws. Their post was written by their attorney, and the 2 positive comments were family members.
