I use a pickle fork on my air hammer to bust those ball joints loose. Not worried about jacking up the boot since it's being replaced. @23:30... Don't fully tighten the rear bushing until the car is on the ground. By tightening with the suspension fully sagged, when the car is put back on the ground, the bushing will be twisted and preloaded. Split pins were an evolution of the older english linchpin's used to hold wagon wheels and other devices on shafts, as wheels and devices were designed to turn faster a more lasting fastening was needed hence the design as the shaft still provides the bearing strength but unlike the linchpin, can't be thrown out of its hole by centrifugal force being locked in. Airframe wirelocking is itself an evolution of the split pin providing an even higher strength secure locking method and I have heard racing owners have used wirelocking in place of split pins in their racing cars to prevent overstress on a softish metal pin.

The large pin going through a pedal cycle crank arm is what we would call a 'Cotter Pin'. It is generally smooth with a tapered side and only has thread at the start for a predetermined length and tightness. It is sort of an external 'Woodruff' Key. A Woodruff Key system of order is - component, Woodruff Key, component and fixing nut. A Cotter Pin system of order is - component, component, Cotter Pin, and fixing nut.

@31:15 - I've always known the castle nut locking pins as "split pins"; "cotter pins" were the smooth shafts with a bevel and thread that would lock bicycle pedal arms to the crank shaft; the shaft was slightly tapered so that the pin would snug up into the hole with each turn of the nut, whilst the bevel on the pin would key into the flat slot in the crank shaft, locking the pedal arm and the crank shaft together.

Working on a complete replacement of steering, suspension and brakes for the front of my PT Cruiser. The ball joints on the new control arm, had no zerk grease fittings. Of course the old ones were the wrong thread. Just got back with a kit of 6mm-1.0 fittings. Almost everything on my three cars is cheaper or just a little more for a complete assembly, rather than repairing the part like in the old days. Might as well. I would rather have complete , factory assembled parts.

Nice, just got thru doing my mom's 2006 Jetta TDI. Got the control arms, sway bars, both ball joints for $150 and 2 Monroe struts for $98 each and spent the day doing the complete job without a lift.. lol just used a jack.. Got er done. Driver's side was a pain because the bolt holding the control arm buts into the transmission. lol so you have to drop the load bearing belly loose and take the bone mount off the trans to spin the trans a bit to get the bolt off. after I did that, it was a walk in the park. I don't have an air compressor so I had to do all of it by hand with a 4 foot breaker bar. Suspension work is always a lot of fun without air tools.

When Rainman does something bassakwards, he announces that he did it bassakwards, as in the swaybar assembly. Some viewers are so eager to know something that they comment without watching the whole process. Of course I know some things that Rainman doesn't, but again I have been repairing cars since many years before he was born. I hope I leaned something in 53 years of DIY. Also I have seen several cases lately where lower control arm bushing was under strain from the factory, as they often snap downward when released. I am wondering if this is a myth as well.

I see the bottom ball joints are held in with nylon nuts. Instead of the cotter pin, which should really go through the castle nut why not use a self locking nut? Belt and braces.
@leonhart2452
@leonhart2452 Год назад
A self locking nut has a high resistance to threading onto a bolt. This is ok when using a bolt where you can use a wrench to hold the bolt in place. In the case of a ball joint the bolt is a tapered fit in the spindle. This tapered fit doesn't have enough resistance to turning to stay in place while tightening a lock nut.

here in Australia its called a split pin, a cotter pin is one solid pin with a hole on the end for a split pin .

always knew you were a nut dropper! cotter pins have the loop on one end with 2 straight legs, then there are hitch pins with a pin with a circle to lock it in place, hair pins single straight with a wavy opposite side that locks on the pin. then circle clips inner lock or outer lock, e-rings go into slots on a shaft, the honda has locking clips straight leg with a bent end to catch on the nut to secure it in place. that is what I know and how they are referred, but that is like “coke” in a can, where I live it is “pop” , east of me it is “soda” then down south, all are referred to as “coke” -sprit, -ginger ale, so often these names are regional, the same item can have multiple names in different locations.

Right from the Fastener Corporation of America: A cotter pin (also known as a cotter key) is a metal fastener with two tines that are bent during installation, similar to a staple or rivet. Typically made of wire with a half-circular cross section, cotter pins come in multiple sizes and types. From Albany County Fasteners: Cotter pins, also called split pins or cotter keys, are bent pins with a rounded head that is slid into a hole. Both American companies.

To break the tapered joint in the ball joint, I back up the control arm with a heavy hammer and hit the tapered jont with a lighter hammer. The inertia of the larger hammer helps shock things loose.
