Charlie, or “Reform” or “C,” peaks no more than 900 meters high overlooking the valley of the Poko River and Route 14, to the northeast is Tan Canh with twelve kilometers of crow flies, to the southeast is Kontum, northernmost town in the Central Highlands. (Excerpt from "Red Summer" by Phan Nhat Nam) Charlie suddenly became a place to be remembered since 4000 shells (130mm cannon) bombarded daily, and since the airborne red hat Nguyen Dinh Bao laid down his life at Charlie. (Excerpt from the introduction in the CD War and Peace by Nhat Truong Tran Thien Thanh). Probably almost everyone likes the song "Người Ở Lại Charlie" (The One Who Stays in Charlie), and the name Nguyen Dinh Bao, lieutenant colonel/former colonel of the 11th Airborne Battalion of the 2nd Regiment, ARVN Airborne Division, has entered the legend of Vietnamese music, and perhaps hardly anyone would knows the name of Major Le Van Me (Class 18 of the Vietnam National Military Academy), who was a battalion deputy at that time. He and his advisor Major John Duffy, 5th Special Forces Group, were the last to leave Charlie.
