On April 18, 2016, Medal of Honor recipient Staff Sgt. (Ret) Ryan Pitts spoke to US Military Academy cadets and faculty about the Battle of Wanat in 2008. For his actions during the battle he would be awarded the Medal of Honor. The event was organized by the Modern War Institute at West Point.

I was crying before his presentation was over. I am always impressed by the humility of those who wear the medal. They universally state "I am a caretaker of this medal for those who didnt make it." All my best regards.

When hes talking about the enemy trying to capture an american in korengal I believe hes talking about the ambush that ended with sal giunta being awarded the medal of honor

That’s the one. The bad guys were carrying away Brennon and Sal ended up shooting 3 guys killing two and wounding a third. And got his buddy back. Unfortunately Brennon passed away in surgery later.

Im all in favor of sending it, but this just smells of officers trying to make themselves look good to further their career. A kid right out of Sand Hill could tell you that. They put these boys in a terrible situation and from all accounts, the only reason anyone survived is because those soldiers were warriors and epitomized courage under fire. I really hope the lessons learned from this engagement are taken seriously by leadership. And most importantly, RIP to those dudes who gave everything.

I can tell you there is a lot going on behind the scenes that led to the decision. No one person was culpable or malicious. You have to understand the time and state of the battle field. Building the COP with 173rd made sense knowing the complex attacks, enemy and inability to support the other cops for Chosen. Bella and ranchouse both were vulnerable. Armchair QBing the battle happens. The location was best at the time and 1LT Brostrom put Topside in the best spot as hastily as possible to give the guys a chance. There isn’t a location for a cop that’s “perfect”. You do what you need to with what you have. If the RIP unit came into Bella and Ranchouse in June/July they would’ve have been slaughtered. The enemy was getting more bold and a bunch of cherries with little combat needed a chance with the cop in wanat. Hind sight is 20/20. But the valor and strength those dudes had is what needs to be the only memory of it. Sky Soldiers! 2/503 Able Co 173rd! Have you Herd?
