I have 20+ cats rescued from the streets who have now become permanent residents in my home. Every cat is different when it comes to medicating. Ingrid has some excellent methods here and this is a really helpful video. In my case, however, most of my cats, for some reason, dislike the texture of pate type foods incl A/D , and do not like treats like Ciao or even butter. Hence if the cat has a few tablets + liquid to take, my best way is to mix one type into her canned food which has more juice, and give a small amount of food at a time, so she doesnt feel full enough. Then at each interval, a different med is given. This is the best way I can manage so my cat doesn't associate me with meds time. I admit I may not get all the meds delivered into her system this way, but it's the lesser of two evils. Hope this helps 💖

Giving my cat a pill was always stressful for all of us (it was always a 2 people job) and now she's on antibiotics again. After watching this video I put her pill on a kitchen cloth and put a little bit of delicious meat paste on it. She ate it all with the pill and asked for more paste. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for this video!

I could not believe my eyes when my med-averse cat actually ate her pill with a tiny dollop of canned cat food! She quickly lapped it up on a folded towel, then turned up her nose at that same food on a plate. Who knew? We thank veterinarian, Sally Chevalier, for suggesting this web site! Now we will try this with our other cat, a young hellion. Her claws become flying razors at med time, so fingers crossed.

i think it has something to do with the cat's tongue, it has all these tiny backwards spikes on it. when it rubs against the surface of the towel it catches the pill and goes inside their mouth. when it hits the back of the cat's tongue it is hard for them to spit it out due to the backward spikes so they might as well just swallow it. think that's the science 😀

I have just tried to give my cat her pill using your method on a towel. OH MY GOSH, I have tried numerous times to give her the pill by hiding it in her food, crushing it in food, etc. All I did was put some food on the towel and she ate it. Then I put the pill on the towel and covered it with the food and she ate it!!! Thank you, I was never going to try pilling her by opening her mouth and popping it inside. She was medicated easily on the couch and it was stress free for both of us. THANK YOU!!!!!

Your video was so helpful! I arrived home late last night from being at the vet hospital all day and i was completely overwhelmed with the idea of giving my traumatized cat both a pill and liquid meds. I watched your video and several others for ideas. Your approach was unique and your calm "can do" attitude gave me hope. My cat can be extremely feisty and i didn't think giving her a pill (a bitter tasting one too!) on a towel with wet food was ever going to work, but it did!!! I was so relieved that i could go to bed knowing she had her meds. Thanks again for sharing your tricks and tips.

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!! You're technique of placing the pill on a textured surface worked beautifully. Getting our little guy to take his meds has been a traumatic process. I put his antibiotic in a gob of Churro paste on a course mat, just before his regular meal and he gobbled it down. I did not expect this to work at all, but thought I'd start with the easiest method. My day, and Mr. Cat's day, is so much better because of you.

Angela Warner I guess I missed an important piece of information in my original comment - 😄 We don’t put the soft treat over crushed pills directly. We always crush the pills and place them in capsules in the smallest size (you can order them from amazon, they are size 4), then squeeze soft treats over the capsules for our cat to take. He can smell the bitterness of the pills so he absolutely won’t take them if they aren’t in capsules!

Chantelle Chevon That would not unless you make the pills fresh. The water content in the liquid medication will soften and eventually melt the gelatin capsules if you pre make them. Also these gelatin capsules are extremely tiny I’m not sure how much liquid they can fit.

I can't thank you enough for this advice. My 14 year-old cat, Ounce, has recently been diagnosed with an over-active thyroid and needs to take liquid meds every 12 hours through a syringe which he just wasn't having but will need to be administered for the rest of his life. I spent some time on the internet looking for hints and tips. I knew that the 'wrapping the cat in a towel' trick possibly would work but only under duress for both of us. Then I saw the magic you videoed with your cats happily taking their meds with the help of Hill's A/D and various syringes. I immediately drove to my vet in Deal, Kent, UK who provided me with said syringes and two cans of Royal Canin Feline and Canine Recovery Food which is a similar smooth pate consistency. It's worked beautifully to the extent that my Ounce cat is taking his meds with pleasure and no man-handling necessary.

My boy has hyperthyroid too, he is taking his medication through transdermal. It works best for him and though it is the cheapest it is still very expensive at his Pharmacy. He was experiencing more weight loss so his blood results indicate he needs a higher dose. So I am going from 2.5 to 5.; he is also starting an antidepressant and that is why I am here because it's hard for me to get it down his throat. So she has these great ideas and I am happy for that. I stopped refilling Shane's treats with meds and started using transdermal but that's wrecked his ears (fur loss, thinning skin). He's crashing right now, so we're tapering him off the prednisolone altogether and giving other meds that I'm having a very difficult time giving him (for a roaring infection, exactly what is unknown at the moment). Will have to try giving it to him on a towel. Thing is, he's not eating much of anything at the moment, so getting him to eat ANYTHING on his own right now will also be difficult. I so wish I'd seen this video again sooner. Totally forgot about it. He just ate some regular food, the first all day. Dread pilling in the morning.

I take back every sarcastic thought I had when I first watched this. Oscar, the Cat of Love, is as sweet, affectionate and good-natured cat as has ever lived, but he turns into a twisting, flailing, claw-wielding wild animal when I try to give him a pill (which is every other day for the rest of his life). Despite rolling him in a heavy jacket (which neither of us enjoy), I only manage to get it into him about half the time, and end up bloodied most of the time; no matter who wins, we are both traumatized by the time we're done. I give him a wet nutrition supplement as a treat so after losing another round of "Betraying Oscar's Trust", I covered the capsule with some and embedded it in a small pile of the same and watched in disbelief as he ate the capsule all by himself! I'm cautiously optimistic that this might be the answer to our dilemma. Thank you so much for posting this!

Thank you for this video. It is interesting and a creative way to give cats medication. However, my cat, Brooklyn, is super smart and knows when I am about to administer Atopica (a very, very bitter and nasty antibiotic liquid medication). I give her treats AFTER I administer the medication. These treats help eliminate the nasty bitter taste of Atopic from her tongue/mouth. TIP: When giving your cat a LIQUID medication make sure you are at the very back of your cats mouth (where the whiskers are located). You can stick the syringe into the corner (far back pocket of mouth) of your cat's mouth. DO NOT tilt your cat's head back because the medicine could go into the nose or lung areas which is not safe.

absolutely. You can also syringe in a little at a time. However, pain meds CAN be absorbed by the tongue and gums so it's not necessary to be sure it's at the back of the throat.

This is THE best video I've seen with several great ideas so you can choose which works best for you and your cat. If administering meds is easy for both, it's easier to stick with the schedule and dosage! Awesome! Thank you so much!

OMG! This worked beautifully. I have felt like such a major failure especially after finding the nearly dissolved pill on the floor /rug or even once on their fur after I thought it went down. 🤦🏻‍♀️ THANK YOU!!! sooo very much!

OMG! This worked. Thank you Jesus! Was running out of ideas and was horrible at trying to pill my cat. Bought some Royal Canin from PetSmart and it worked perfect using a syringe over the medicine! Treasure loves it. I throw in a Whiskers Lickin treat after she takes all her meds to add to her joy! Thank you so much for sharing this method. I'm so grateful you did! Every vet needs to see this, because apparently many are not aware of this approach. Could save little kitties everywhere and make it easier for their owners. Thanks again!!

Omg!! I just did this technique with my Moms cats to give them an oral flea medication and it went off without one single problem from the jump!! We are both thrilled and the cats are medicated and got a delicious treat along with it!! This is by far the BEST technique I have ever seen or used. Thank you! Thank you!! (I am speaking of the treat in the syringe put over the pill)

Thank you so much for posting this video. Adding the wet food to the syringe is brilliant. Prior to this video, I had been battling with my cat, trying to get her to take her liquid antibiotics, but she would just start heavily drooling and spitting out the liquid. I suspected that hardly any medication was actually getting ingested. Today, I added wet food to the syringe and she finally swallowed a full dose of medicine. Thanks again!

This video has changed my life! 4 of my 5 cats took their pills with food immediately! It was magical. Cat #5 is very new to me (adopted her 5 days ago) and she's just started accepting wet food. Once she's comfortable I'll start practice-medicating her too.

I'm SO impressed! I have one cat this has had to start taking meds and I'd had no success until i watched your video! I tried doing the syringe with Hills a/d over pill ON TEXTURED SURFACE. I'm amazed!? It worked the first time, and I see no hesitation on her part. Thank you for the tip!

I tried the textured surface trick this morning on our old man! Wow!! He has just been diagnosed with kidney failure after 17 years of good health. This is a cat who has never had to take daily medication in his life time and is fairly difficult to even brush. Who just yesterday our vet said is easier to inject than give pills. Well the pill went down with no fuss, no trauma (which we both experienced yesterday trying the old fashioned way). Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! So very much for sharing this video!

I'm in the same boat. 3 with kidney disease, one of which is also diabetic. Daily polling was a nightmare for everyone until I saw this video. If no one has told you about it yet, felinecrf.org is a great resource and there's a support group you can join through that site as well.
