I’ve been on Phenytoin for 37 years. And my only complaint is the super high pitched nonstop sound in my head. Pretty much from day one.

I have tried "Oxteller XR 300mg" because my neurologist decided he would up the milligrams on my vimpat. So after they upped my vimpat I ended up having migraines. The first migraine i had was worse than the after effects of having a seizure! If you have ever had a seizure, you will know that says ALOT!!! I felt like my eyes were going to explode inside my head!

Thank you for sharing, Heather! Have the symptoms subsided? Or, are they continuing?

@@GilSolanoREEGT I was taken off the oxteller XR 300mg ,and put on "Xcopri 200mg " They also lowered the vimpat. Now I haven't had a migraine since it was fixed. Thank God!!!

This stuff gave me double vision and threw off my balance. I couldn’t walk a straight line unless I closed one eye. I stopped taking it and now on levetiracetam and lamictal

Wow, thanks for sharing. That information is super helpful to tell my students and patients. May I ask how long you were on Dilantin when you first had those symptoms?

This caused my mood to change. When I first started this my mood changed dramatically. I started to become very snippy and rude to people. In fact it almost cost me my job. Thankfully I was on it for a couple of months, because the plan was to take me off it anyway. Once I was taken off the medication, I was put on Lamotrigine. I have been on Lamotrigine for four years now, and it works wonderfully. I don’t have any mood swings, and my seizures are under control

I took this medication for the first 34 years of my life! I started out on the liquid dilantin...that was some NASTY stuff! I had to use it and alot of other medications along with it! I was up to 32 epilepsy related pills a day! i have taken keppra, dilantin, zonegran, lamictal, ....ect. I am off 3 of the medications listed before! I am now taking 7 pills a day but still have a seizure every once in a while! The newest medication i am on is pretty good, it is "xcopri 200mg" i also take vimpat.

Wow, thank you for sharing that, Heather! May I ask what type of seizures you have? When you were on 32 pills, were you also having seizures every once in a while?

@@GilSolanoREEGT I have had grand mal or tonic clonic seizures since birth. I I was told that when i was born i was having atleast 13 seizures a day. Also while i was on the 32 pills a day, I still had atleast one seizure a month.

I hate all of these medications. I am doing my best to take them day by day (Firts 1 month after craniotomy, I was on Keppra and fall into depression and suicidal thoughts; none of my parents believed which was the worst part, they thought I was just down because of the surgery and that made me believe "Perhaps I am going crazy because my brain is still swollen" and then I investigated, proofed myself by taking the risk of not dose for two days and my old self returned) I am now using Phenytoin after talked with my doctor, he recommended 100 mg x3 during the day, but I am just taking 150 mg I know I should follow the instructions but I don't want to feel worse again which I know is going to happen again 😢

I'm sorry you're dealing with that. I imagine being reliant on medications is tough. I truly hope you find answers fast.

I have all of these serious side effects after 15 years of use, but i have no choice, its the only medication that works for me , but this causes much worse long term side effects than is mentioned here, neuropathy, and phycosis, dementia, arthritis, behavioural issues, list goes on. So if you can get off it, do so fast

Horrible medication!! My grandma was prescribed that for seizures and it caused her to lean on one side when she walked and ate, she lost her strength and her body became stiff and heavy. She was admitted to the ER because that medication caused her to lose so much balance and she fell and hit her head and had to get a transfusion of platelets. I do not recommend this medication to ANYONE

Sorry for your experience. Medications work differently for different people. I hope she finds the right medication.
