It has been 23 years since the Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Plan for Africa was created to drive pharmaceutical production on the African continent. In 2009, African Medicines Regulatory Harmonisation Initiative begun with head of medicines agencies organising themselves to collaborate improve regulatory efficiencies. The AMRH initiatives was followed by the drafting of the African Medicines Agency Treaty to begin institutionalising the creation of a pan-African medicines regulator. The adoption of the treaty in 2021 was a critical step in the creation of the African Medicines Agency followed by the selection of Rwanda as the country that will host the African Medicines Agency. In this video, Lenias Hwenda explains what the medicines agency is, its purpose and how far we have come towards its institutionalisation.
