For the past couple of months I’ve been playing around with and trying to figure out this interesting instrument-a hurdy gurdy! Here is a selection of snippets of some medieval songs I’ve learned to play on it.
Beware: this instrument sounds like a cross between a bagpipe and a violin... and I’m a beginner just playing by ear... yeah it’s gonna sound rough lol
It’s a very fun folk instrument to play, and it was popular in Europe from the 11th century up until the 18th and 19th centuries. It operates with a crank turning a wheel beneath the strings (like a violin bow does) and it has 24 chromatic keys which you push against the two melody strings to make different notes. It has two drone strings as well, giving it that constant hum.

I was actually wondering whether you played any instruments, why doesn't this surprise me? xD Nevertheless, i was for a brief period very interested in getting one, where did you buy yours? Did you make it yourself? If not, what did you pay for it?

It’s from Fairygurdies on Etsy. I believe it was around $550 US.

@@Ralchire At this point, after doing a lot of research, I'm about halfway done with my own one. Built it myself, still a long way to go, but I'm confident it'll be done sooner or later. Where've you been since this upload though? I miss your content.

What's the name of this instrument? I love the music it makes!

JustMe NameAli it’s called a hurdy-gurdy in English, but it has plenty of other names in other languages which I can neither spell nor pronounce. Look up hurdy gurdy on YT and you might find some expert-level music on these. Cheers!

@@Ralchire Actually, in Scotland, Ireland and Wales, i have heard about it as a Wheel-fiddle, although in my native language, it is called a Drejelire, which translates to Turningharp, or something like it. Lire is, from what i've understood, a general type of string-instrument.

Søren Haandbæk Something like wheel harp or wheel lyre seems to be the generic name for it in a lot of languages. In 17th c. German it is the Bauernleier, or peasant’s lyre, and there are more interesting names too.

@@Ralchire Huh, interesting. I guess it comes as no surprise, since it's a pretty basic function, thus not leaving many possible names, at least not that are based on the mechanism of the device.

Do you play any other instruments or is this your first? Knowing you have been playing it for only two months this isn't bad at all.

Blaž Mežnaršič I learned most of these songs by ear on piano first so the transition wasn’t terribly difficult. My sister also owns a Celtic harp so I play that a little too (though very slowly and very poorly indeed). I’ve never had the patience to learn other instruments because it’s a lot harder to get the note you want via fingering, or chords, or whatever versus the “one key = one note” way of playing harp, piano, or hurdy gurdy.

Thanks for sharing! Hope to see and hear more of these as you improve. :)
