Meditation for Overcoming Shame and Anxiety | Processing Repressed Shame

I hope you enjoy the birds singing in the background (and I apologize if they are distracting). Shame is something we all deal with, but mostly avoid. It is common to develop anxiety as a result of our habitual avoidance of shame, something I only learned after investigating my own anxiety and the anxiety in clients I work with.
We repress shame so much, and as a result it lingers in the background and is easily triggered by life circumstances. The way to deal with shame isn't to avoid it further or rationalize it away, but instead to truly face it, welcome the experience and allow it to pass through us.
Mindfulness (Vipassana) meditation offers an excellent skillset for processing shame. It works because we are actively cultivating equanimity and clarity with our experience, and that allows us to process it effectively (with practice).

I cried during the gratitude. I realised my anxiety and overplanning was coping for something I felt deep shame for. But my best friend accepted me fully and completely even after I told her I was gay, and it made me so grateful to have her in my life. Someone who loves me and does not show repulsion towards the part of me that I feel shame about. How lucky are we

Yes we so need that validation, it’s great that you got that! I’m sure you’ll meet so many more people in your life who will accept you for who you are, and if anyone doesn’t, know that that’s their loss and not your problem. 🙏

So true about the underneath of anxiety. When I'm ready to feel what's really going on and feel it, the anxiety disappears completely.

I meditated on it and revisited some shameful moments and actually only found understanding and acceptance. It was surprisingly comforting. Thanks for the video.

My face felt hot almost as soon as you said the word shame. Talking about disproportionate reactions... A hot lump sat in my throat for the entire video just by listening to you. I totally see why we avoid dealing with shame. I will have to come back to this video and it has to be out of the love for myself. Thank You

I cried during the meditation I struggle with setting boundaries and people pleasing. It stems from feeling like i need to perform to receive love and that who i am as a person isn't enough Growing up i was labelled the weird child and i internalized is as there is something wrong with me. I am deconstructing the stories that have made me feel small for such a long time

I've listened to several of your meditations now, and they all offer such value and insight. This meditation, though, was so powerful for me. A realization emerged that was devastating in it's simplicity: the shame I feel is a direct result of my father's disgust towards my body. He didn't communicate this in words - he was too passive aggressive for that. Instead, he let me know through his body language, avoidance of touch, and facial expressions. The only thing I can do with this knowledge is to allow it to exist, as you so compassionately advise. Thank you so much for your hard work and dedication. You're making the world a better place.

Thank you so much for this explanation and meditation. I really appreciate it. I had no idea it could be the cause of anxiety and the validation of it really helped to replace with compassion. Thanks again very much.

Wow...first time viewer and this was just what I needed. I was feeling guilty about calling off work in an ice storm and realized it was shame. So I searched for a "shame meditation" and yours popped up. About a minute in, I realized the shame I'd felt since childhood had re-appeared in my present situation. And your having us stand with that younger version of ourselves and feeling it with them really helped. But also standing back and imagining a close friend being in my own situation made me realize that I would actually celebrate that person and see them as strong, not fatally flawed. That shifted my perspective and I could feel the shame dissolve in a good way into my body. Thank you so much!

Wow, we just came to your channel from Nathaniel Drew’s comment section and love that you also use RU-vid as a way to add value to other people! We have just been reading Brene Brown's book "Daring Greatly"- she talks a lot about shame and vulnerability so it's really interesting to hear you touch on that as well! Keep up the great work ☺️💛

Hey yes I’m actually working on a whole series of practices for trauma… there’s a risk of overwhelm when working with trauma so it’s going to be a whole series so people can do the practices to address where they are at. Editing the first few scripts this week and they should be recorded and whatnot in a few weeks :)

Is it normal to feel worse after this? Is that just me feeling the shame?
@BeingIntegrated
@BeingIntegrated Год назад
Yes, unfortunately that’s normal. Just do your best to welcome the feelings, and they will pass. Movement like walking or exercise (or dance) is very helpful too. The idea is you’re processing repressed feelings and it may take a bit to get to the other side. Also try one of my gratitude or compassion / loving-kindness practices to help feel better.

I don’t think meditating will end shame. I think going and hitting the gym is a better way.
@BeingIntegrated
@BeingIntegrated 7 месяцев назад
Hitting the gym is so good for so many reasons. It can undoubtedly help with shame. But shame is also a conscious or unconscious belief that we are somehow wrong or bad. If we don’t deconstruct and rewrite that belief, then it may remain stuck.
