Thanks for the comparison. Obviously the realtime raytracing GI is missing in UE5, which leave the image slightly less saturated in the shadows. However I really love the sharp details and the much better render of the depth of field in UE5. The Fur looks so much better in UE5. The one issue apart from the late loading meshes, is the ghosting effects of UE5's temporal super resolution, or Anti Aliasing. I've hoped they would have fixed this by now.

This demo was clearly more designed for the older engine's use of artificial GI so it looks more saturated in spots. UE5 just removes the baked lighting or whatever the original artistic intent was.

It removed all the bounce lights, which makes it look very unrealistic, imo.

Ist not exactly removing light, the surfaces just behave different. 5:10 e.g. the underside of the rock is darker in 4. All in all, I don't see any major improvement, the reflection is just set up differently.

Unreal engine 5 lumen still needs a traditional path-tracing it lacks diffuse bounce lighting for albedo Nvidia Path-tracer is still unmatched.
@josefabuaisheh6262
@josefabuaisheh6262 5 дней назад
Baked lights are actually the most accurate Lighting with the downside of rendering moving shadows, other than of course pathtraced offline renderers. Most AAA-Games still bake plenty of very detailed environments. However I think with UE5's Lumen, they deactivated the realtime raytracing Method that was used in UE4 and replaced it with a much less performance intensive solution, that works perfectly together with nanite, but is arguably less visually stunning. It would be interesting to see, how Unreal Engines Path Tracer would render this video offline! Or you could try to get some of the missing GI back in UE5: "From the project editor UI select "Edit -> Project settings → Engine → Rendering-> Global Illumination → Dynamic Global Illumination Method". From the drop down list select your preferred method (which can be None, lumen, Screen Space, Standalone Ray Traced, or an external plugin). or you can manually edit the DefaultEngine.ini in .../path_to_your_UE5_project/config/DefaultEngine.ini Go to the [/Script/Engine.RendererSettings] section in the configuration file and set the following variable to your preferred method and set r.DynamicGlobalIlluminationMethod to 0, 1, 2 or 3 (e.g " r.DynamicGlobalIlluminationMethod=0 ). By default, it is set to "1" which corresponds to "lumen". The methods, as listed above, are None (0), lumen (1), Screen Space (2), Standalone Ray Traced (Deprecated) (3)."

4:58 that's just wrong in UE5.4 The inside of the egg is completely black. But UE4 does it more realistically because light penetrates the shell a bit. Also where is all the global illumination gone in UE5.4 The underside of the egg shell is just black?

@melxb

 @FantasyNero it's not all too dark, when the little guy is on top of the egg it makes the egg look like it's floating for unreal 4, UE5 is more realistically grounded, not perfect given this was applied to something old after the fact, but still u can see it's doing things more realistically especially in other moments where u see light and color bounce like the canyon behind the meerkat when he is on top of the egg and then also on the egg shell when he is inside the hole

This demo was done with the capabilities of Unreal Engine 4. The artist adapt their artistic vision to the tools of unreal 4. Make this comparison is curious to watch how is the compatibility between two versions of Unreal (I think there are issues in the scattering propriety of the egg material, the fur rendering of the eagle and the global lighting in the unreal 5 footage). But is not barely useful to compare anything else.

This video clearly demonstrates why transferring a game or animation from one engine to another is not a straightforward process. All the work on lighting, textures, antialiasing, etc., for this animation was created with the limitations of UE4 in mind. When the person transferred the animation to UE5.4, they didn't adjust the lighting or textures, which are overly sharp, nor did they use the new tessellation tools for fur, feathers, and terrain details. As a result, the original version is obviously more visually appealing.

@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish 9 дней назад
Seems major issue is that is something wrong with the setup of the sub surface scattering in the egg shell material making it look less translucent in the UE5 version. I think this is why many claim it needs more bounce light. look at the rocks. Plenty of bounce there. Almost as much as UE5 Apart from less saturation. But that is an art choice in the UE4 version. This can easily be fixed in the UE5 version with just a color grading curve. No what makes the egg look more realistic in the UE4 version is the translucent material that seems to not be working properly in the UE5 version and that is why the egg look so “dark”

Thank you for the side by side from 2:46 Honestly i couldn't see any difference between them when watching. UE4 is more fun to watch but a little bit too orange. UE5 has better dark levels for shadows but the overall image isn't as much fun to watch, slightly dull. But again watching them one at a time without the side by side i honestly couldn't see any difference between them.

It looks more visually appealing because of how the post-processing and shading were adjused to fit the scene in UE4, all of which doesn't transfer too well into UE5.

Funny how the fake bounce light made it looked "better", sometimes the best solution is the artist solution.
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish 9 дней назад
I mean it was fake. I bet it was done with GI calculations. It’s just baked do not realtime. And this makes me think that reason UE5 version looks dull is that the it has not be properly set up. As lumen should be able to produce same / similar results as UE4 for this scene. I just think original scene had great art / light direction. While the new one basically was just converted abd tweaked to have good light direction
@BB_O_99
@BB_O_99 9 дней назад
@@litjellyfish I think in the 4.26 they used the regular "ambient" sky and ground light or just a sun light rotated toward the "sky" without casting shadows, like I usually do. That way you can control the amount of fake bounce light in those desert scenes, wich looks quite good if all scenes are outdoor areas. The 5.4 is calculating more precise real time shadows and GI, that kills the fake sun bounce from small areas and made it look dull in some scenes. But if you check at 3:39 you can see that the scene has less light bleeding in 5.4 and it look better in my opinion. One solution for that is keeping the light on but reduce the power and disable it in the sequencer while the indoor scenes are happening.
@litjellyfish
@litjellyfish 9 дней назад
@@BB_O_99 yes for sure. Totally agree. Also I think the translucent/sub surface scattering setup on the egg shell itself is a bit off in the new version. That is what I think many react o no

UE4 version looks artistically better for the scene imo (Probably because it had extra care which considered color grading and shading as there were limitations in UE4). The UE5 part looks like it was just ported to the new engine with no extra tweaks to retain some of the art style even though the tools are more advanced. The reddish tint on the UE4 one (with lack of higher grade shadows) is better for 3d cartoons/adventure games, while the UE5 one would better fit some action movie CGI/action games. All just my opinions, but we should remember that digital content should have differentiation and character to avoid feeling the same.

This is a UE 4 engine demo running on compatibility mode on UE 5, so is basically the same demo running twice with some compatibility adjustments. For those wondering how is possible that UE 4 looks so good it is because UE 4 is already an extremely capable and almost photorealistic engine. Because this comparison does not make sense in the way you think it does. This demo was built in UE4 with UE4's feature set in mind and then simply ported to UE5. The baked lighting is replaced by Lumen which results in a more realistic behaviour of light and shadow but the scene also loses the artistic vision of the original. Also it doesn't efficiently utilize UE5's other advanced technologies like nanite or virtual shadow maps. This demo is a nice look at the compatibilities between UE4 and UE5. But is is NOT a competetive comparison. UE5 is basically running on training wheels while UE4 is fully utilized.

Stop cutting the graphics, the graphics in all games are already excellent when you make a physical impact on the world around you, everything is beautiful everywhere, but you can’t get enough of the graphics alone, you want the stones and sand in the world around you to be physically changed just like in reality, otherwise there’s no point in all of it this beauty that it's worth everything Dead like scenery

I didn't put that in video as it's super messy, and since this is not a commercial project I don't see much of use to showcase unoptimized demo. It is after all straight "out of the box" default experience, which you may see right after opening the project in UE editor. I mean if you guys really want to see the performance I can ofcourse prepare one for you.

This demo was made with UE4's limitations (lighting, anti-aliasing, textures etc.) in mind, so it doesn't transfer too well into UE5. As result it looks better and more natural in UE4, as the post-processing settings and shading were also adjusted to UE4's version to fit the scene better. The demo in UE5 doesn't use any new tech like lumen. And the RT won't work well with materials that aren't made with RT in mind.

This comparison is wrong because of many errors in ue5 example. Such as light occlusion or material transparency. Because of that it looks too simple and less realistic.

Great video and comparison, but this demo is such an awful comparison for the engines as it's quite obvious it's been made on UE4 and then updated for UE5, otherwise it'd look completely different on UE5. I think we're past the point of it mattering seeing as UE5's been around for about 4 years, but if people cared still and Epic did too then it would be cool to see a tech demo made on UE5 be downgraded to UE4 to show what's missing, this is more a comparison to show what's added if you port something over which isn't necessarily going to make full use of UE5 as it wasn't made from the ground up for it.
