Every Monday, you'll get to meet a member of our herd, and learn about their personalities and a few fun facts about their physical traits and arctic adaptations.💚 We hope you enjoy meeting Littleman!

He is wonderful! Oomingmac. I am an artist and have done drawings of musk ox when I worked for Alaska magazine. Many years ago now. I also used a pick like that when I sported an afro back in the 60's. Keep up the great work with these wonderful creatures.

Cool vid! The moulted coat that you brush out - do you use that for anything?
@MuskOxFarmOfficial

We sure do! It's the whole reason that we farm them, for their amazing fiber - their underwool, called qiviut! It's one of the softest, finest, and warmest fibers in the world, thanks to the arctic adaptations of the musk ox. We will be releasing Episode 2: Combing - as part of our From Combing to Closet series this Friday - so check back to see what it looks like and learn a bit more!

I love the Musk Ox but have never seen one in the flesh. I was going to ask the reason that you farm them but have seen your reply to another comment.. Thanks for letting us meet Littleman. He's handsome!

Wow! Littleman is so beautiful! Something about ox is so special, big tough grafters of the tundra. They're alot smaller than I thought they were, I was under the impression they could rival bison!

That's a common reaction we get from our visitors, how short they are! Even the largest bull will only reach about 5 feet in height. This is an arctic adaptation! Their short legs means that they can hold heat closer to the ground much better, and their bodies don't have to work as hard to keep those legs warm. (Think less surface area) Also, the arctic doesn't get deep snowfall, so they haven't needed to get any taller than they are!

Larger species of musk ox died out after the last ice age. A few of those are known from mummified remains in Fairbanks.

Do you know how I can purchase a skein of muskox yarn? I have heard it is warmer than wool and lighter than silk. Beautiful animal!

Do they like to be pet?
@c.rutherford

Theres something about seeing arctic Musk Ox given pet names, spoon fed and brushed in a cow pen that seems to take something of natures wild spirit away. Eventually they're just going to be sheep lol

We see them as an arctic ambassador, to connect this species with people that (still) don't know they exist, and will never otherwise be able to see them in the wild (unless you happen to live where they are wild, or have a really cool job in the arctic) gets them interested in musk oxen and in turn, what their lives are like in the wild and how they are and will be effected by a changing climate!

The Muskox (Ovibos moschatus) is a bear-sized bovid native to the northern hemisphere, it is the only extant species of the genus Ovibos, its closest living relative is the Takin (Budorcas taxicolor), this makes both species the only surviving members of the tribe Ovibovini, surprisingly, Ovibovini is one of only three extant tribes that are now belong to a new subfamily known as Ovibovinae, the others being the tribes Hemitragini (Tahrs) and Naemorhedini (Gorals, Serows, Chamoises, and Mountain Goat), it is also hinted that the subfamily Ovibovinae is fairly similar and most closely related to the subfamilies Hippotraginae (Grazing Antelope) and Alcelaphinae (Hartebeests, Wildebeests, Hirola, and Tsessebees).

Are musk oxen domesticated ?
@MuskOxFarmOfficial
@MuskOxFarmOfficial 3 года назад
Technically no, they are not yet domesticated - it's what we're trying to achieve! Our herd here at the Musk Ox Farm is most certainly not wild, they are considered wild tamed, as they've been living here in captivity for generations since the 1960s. Domestication takes a really long time!

What happen if this animal is introduced in the countries near Equator
@NeonTwirl

Yah know, I always had the perception from various documentaries that they were so much larger! Something closer to cattle or bison, but my god they absolutely tiny. Horses tower above them lol, these are hairy munchkin goats.

How can I get a job of taking care of these guys ?): I really want to proceed a career of rescuing animals, helping them out and doing what other animals lovers do that I've seen on RU-vid Id like to do this too (:
@MuskOxFarmOfficial
@MuskOxFarmOfficial 3 года назад
Hi Jazmin! Most folks who end up working with animals like this will have a degree in Animal Science or Wildlife Biology. If you're in school currently, or are planning to attend college that would be the track to consider! Then, once you've gotten a few classes under your belt, start seeking out internships to further your experience and come out of schooling with some real world, hands-on skills that you can add to your resume. :)
