Megadeth - Mary Jane First Time Listen & Reaction 

The thing to try to get your head around (difficult if you didnt grow up in the 80s) is that when Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Testament and Anthrax broke into the mainstream around 1986-1988 (arguably a bit earlier for Metallica) the heaviest bands out there were the likes of Iron Maiden, Accept, Scorpions, Dio people like that ie not particularly heavy by modern standards. Thrash was a new concept and nothing like it had really been attempted, literally those bands wrote the rule book and created the DNA for thousands of bands since. When you view it in that context you’ll realise how incredible and groundbreaking the late 80s were. This one is my favourite Megadeth track ever, but i was 16, halcyon days. Your comment about the clarity/crispness of production i agree with. The same problem on Ozzy’s 1988 album which is an absolute classic but sadly some of the production sounds like someone put a thin pillow over a speaker. Having said that i hate modern production values which are TOO clean, i find drums these days for most heavy groups just sound too sterile like a drum machine and everyone sounds the same. Try listening to Slayer’s late 80s and you’ll see how much a drummer’s genius and personality can express themselves in a track.

Its Check Behler on drums . I love this album , to learn to play it on an instrument really increases the appreciation for it . Production flaws add character and life to the album imo . Thanks for checkin one of the greats man 👍

Dave Ellefson did NOTHING wrong. He was exonerated and nothing he did was illegal. It was between two consenting adults. Dave Mustaine just used it as a means to force him out of the band.

The drums definitely sound weird because of the re-master. You have to hear the original to understand why. Basdically the entire drum track is re- recorded for the re-master and replaces the original drum track. Yes, Dave thought it sounded THAT bad. I mean, it wasn't good... but, I think he went too far if you ask me. He was so determined to get rid of all the reverb and to bring some organic sound to the drums that he went way too far and sucked all the life out of the damn recording. He all made touches to other parts of the album, from guitar parts to vocals. I think he got a bit too mad scientist on here. It was better the way it was in its original form even with the terrible mix.
