to me the "i spread disease like a dog" line in the chorus is still one of the thrashiest lines in metal history imo

the small bass part right before the main riff is beast as hell.

yes it is, and now that I've heard it in its FULL glory, I'm pissed that it was mixed somewhat poor within the full song with all the tracks. If you listen to the song proper, this nifty bass lick is only *partially* heard...

I admire- and not without some envy- Ellefson's effortless and fluid control with a pick. The guy's got an amazing evenness of attack, and some of those bass lines from Rust In Peace are quite challenging with a lot of rapid fire string crossing. I've recently begun attempting to incorporate some pick usage after 16 years of being a finger player, and unfortunately I seem to be proving to be rather awkward and clunky with a pick. I loaded up on a variety of sizes and thicknesses to experiment with in the hopes of finding just the right one. I've got great consistency with an alternating trio of fingers, but I'm a complete disaster with a piece of triangular plastic. I'm reluctant to give up because I'd like to develop some plectrum skills. Ellefson has always been criminally underrated as a metal bassist. F*ckin' shame....

I envy the fact you can play with 3 fingers! I'm not really a pick or finger player, I can do both, but I like the sound of a pick better. I have a David Ellefson signature Jackson, and his signature Hartke amp (a bit sad and obsessive, I know), and I really love his bass tone on Rust In Peace. I finally managed to get it after 5 years of endless new basses, pedals and amps, but I still don't think my arm has the stamina to maintain the speed or consistency of his pick skills!
@Big_Red_Devil_98
@Big_Red_Devil_98 9 лет назад
***** Sure. I use a DigiTech multi effects to get a nice balance between the amd and the bass. On my Jackson bass, I drop the mids down to about 2, and I boost the Treble to about 8 and bass to about 9, and I use the neck pickup for everything. My amp is pretty complicated to explain. Theres a bass and treble control and nothing else, which I prefer rather than several different controls. The graphic eq settings are: 80 - full 160 - +2 315 - -1 630 - -8 1.25k - +8 2.5k - +1 5k - +2 This should give a pretty nice balance between the guitar and the amp, BUT I still have the DigiTech there to keep everything levelled.
@Big_Red_Devil_98
@Big_Red_Devil_98 9 лет назад
***** I use the effects pedal to boost up bass and the volume, purely because the a70 isnt a hydrive series amp, and the effect helps to give it a bit more power. The only reason I bought the a70 over the kickback hydrives etc. was due to storage reasons and so I didn't upset the neighbours TOO much.

Rust in Peace has amazingly fresh production to this day. Everything sounds so crisp, and this separated track is no different. The lack of reverb in the drums is also appropriate for their sound.

Man, this one is more cleaner and technical than Cliff's. Junior is one hell of a bass god!
@gustavomarques4097
@gustavomarques4097 7 лет назад
Cliff was very creative, he created awesome bass lines, but we sounded really awful. Sloppy sound, all messed up and his pizzicato wasn't precise. He couldn't match James Hetfield's picking speed. Ellefson on the other hand, is a very accurate bassist and got a nice technique as we hear in the video. sadlt he doesn't compose too much, but the lines he develop following Dave's guitar instructions are awesome as well
@maxdurk4624
@maxdurk4624 7 лет назад
Gustavo Marques Cliff played with his fingers. Thats why it may sound sloppy, gives the bass a different tone. He can't match James' picking speed because he isn't using a pick lol. Look at Steve Harris: Literally everybody loves him and calls him a great bassist and basslines are terrific, but isolated they sound sloppy
@gustavomarques4097
@gustavomarques4097 7 лет назад
So, you're saying that pizzicato = sloppy sound? No fucking way, mate. Lack of tecniques may be the reason. Would you say Geddy Lee is a Sloppy player 'cause of his fingerstyle? Steve Harris, as you're saying, may sound sloppy as well but he certainly sound better than Cliff. Again, I'm not judging his compositions, which are great by the way, as we all know. I'm just saying he isn't the God of Bass Guitar, like a lot of people used to claim. You also said Cliff couldn't match James picking speed 'cause he used his fingers. Well, that also agrees with the statement "Cliff wasn't a high skilled bass guitarist". 'Cause there's a lot of bass players who can beat the guitar using the fingers. Every band from this shit genres like Death Metal or worse has one of those.
@maxdurk4624

Jimmy Page I stand corrected on the keeping up part. I dont know what I was thinking. But I still do maintain that fingered bass usually sounds sloppy at metal speeds.

@@gustavomarques4097 sloppy does not mean bad. When will you understand this? There are so many sloppy guitar players like Hendrix and Page. They are legendary.

It's crazy the stuff that kind of winds up being a little inaudible in a track. You don't get to hear great bass lines like this because they are drowned out by the guitars, drums, and vocals. Get to hear how awesome David Ellefson plays. One of my favorite bass players of all time.
