MrRoziuke They would fuck that up so much. I tried to learn Dystopia earlier today on guitar. I could only get through the intro, the first verse, and part of the chorus and even then it didn't sound that great. Meanwhile I can play Seek and Destroy easily up until the solo (not putting Metallica down, just saying.)

I think the producers of the show told the band to play a classic rock song because, in order to practice a song by Megadeth, they would've known that they would win. The producers didn't want them to tell people the results before the show.

The Grammys are a complete fucking joke, but the fact remains that they are hard to get for metal bands nowadays, so I think the fact that Megadeth won recently is even more of an achievement than if the Grammys actually weren’t fucked up.

i think it's awfulness is being pretty exaggerated. you can hear two guitars - one quieter and panned to the left, and one louder panned to the right. it's the latter that's really just fucking it up for everyone. the quieter guitar on the left is doing great, doing some pretty sick solos, the drummer is hella on point too (i don't know why people are bitching about him). but that one fucking guitarist on the right, he has one fucking job - play that riff, and he still fucks it up, misses his cue in the intro too, and for some reason the mixers made him louder, so basically he ruined the whole song. for all we know, he might actually be a totally competent guitarist in other styles, but he clearly has no idea how to play metal guitar.

Honestly, from a guitar players perspective, the rhythm guitar tone sounded like they were playing with REALLY low gain/distortion compared to what one should use for a song like this. I can't figure out why they chose to play it like that. It sounds almost like a non-master volume amp or something, basically 60's and 70's style rock overdrive. Any guitar nuts here who like vintage Marshall plexis, etc. will know exactly what I mean. Also high-gain distortion makes styles like thrash metal not only sound better, but also is MUCH easier to play compared to using a vintage styled low-gain amp for this style. High-gain/distortion creates alot of sustain etc. and the physical effort of playing the guitar is much easier somehow. Also keep in mind that you can use too much distortion as well, even in metal...it's all about balance like anything else. Most seasoned guitar players will understand what I'm saying here. By using a tone like this, right out the gate...especially to the non-guitar player, it's gonna make it sound like complete crap.

In fairness to the house band, they were probably going to play 'Master of Puppets' regardless of who won. Do you really think they were prepared to play Gojira or Periphery if either of them was the winner? They most likely picked a song for each category to represent that genre regardless of nominees and winners. Otherwise, they'd have to learn five songs for each category. I'd bet they just picked Metallica because they thought that would be a good representation of Metal; the fact that Megadeth won was just unforeseen irony. As for their version of the song, I think they just selected a recognizable riff they could jam on for however long it took the winner to walk to the stage. I doubt they were going for a straight cover of the song.
