I honestly think it's funnier to believe Sakurai offered Toby Sans as a playable fighter but Toby thought it'd be funnier to make Sans a Mii Gunner costume. And he was right
You know what else is a fever dream? the ending of Deltarune (Imm not joking btw, its canon Toby Fox lore that the ending of Deltarune will be inspired by a fever dream he had once)
Imagine being a 15-year-old kid composing his first song (one for a stupid edgy EarthBound hack, no less) by just shouting random words to a melody off the top of your head, and then over a decade later, it's become one of the most beloved and mainstream game songs ever, making it into Smash, being played by full orchestras in Japanese concert halls and even getting performed for the Pope. This song has come such a long way, to the point of pretty much being a song to represent Toby's growing success over the years. I'll never get over how much is put into this arrangement in particular too. A key change signifying Toby's emotions that wasn't in any previous version, the synthesized electric guitar sound from the opening of the original Halloween Hack version, the real electric guitar from the Homestuck version shredding away, sans., Heartache and Bonetrousle all slipped in before the loop, representing Sans and the two most important people in his life, the subtle inclusion of Hopes and Dreams and various other Undertale tracks...
@@danielz-v4083 yeah, now people are saying that matpat wasn't crazy after all. By giving undertale to the pope, megalovania was performed by a circus. and the pope likes it.
@@DirectalYT Can we stop pretending it's because of MatPat? The Pope doesn't even have a computer. Megalovania is a mainstream song, that is the reason it got played, not because the Pope is secretly a hardcore gamer, played Undertale and aced the Genocide route.
@@ElFreakinCid never said I was lmaoo. Didn't say the pope played it or anything. People been calling out on matpat for giving the pope Undertale. Yes it is understandable that he doesn't have a computer. At the same time when it was played, matpat's actions probably influenced the song to be played.
@@thepianokid9378 not to mention that was Toby's alias at the time so he created the song all the way back in 2008 when the Halloween rom was made can you believe that
@@violet415 Heartache. Think about it, who's the one with immense importance to Sans, and one of the two boss characters you have to kill alongside everything else to fully commit to a Genocide playthrough?
@@sans-theskeletonplayerita1634 No, I just get confused by all the noise and it's hard to distinguish singular tones/beats when it's as loud as this. Seriously, I cannot hear Bonetrousle here at all, and only faintly something that resembles Heartache, and I don't understand how you can pick up on those so easily.
@Sans - (The Skeleton Player ITA) Nevermind, I found another comment that actually explained it for me and now I can hear them. You could've said "Listen to the guitar" instead of "You have broken ears." The latter doesn't help at all, does not help me understand and is just plain rude. Some people don't know where to put their focus when having to listen to a certain thing, people with attention issues don't have bad hearing, just problems with focus. It's not fun to be insulted because of that.
"Timelines jumping back and forth..." *Portals open at random, giving glimpses to Andonuts and Varik's fight and Homestuck's battle* "Heh. That was you, wasn't it?"
What's weird about Sans suddenly deciding to fight is that he chose the timeline where all of his friends are already dead. He could have waited for a pacifist timeline instead, but chose to make the worst possible reality the REAL one. (or try to).
@@LampreyKissesThat's the thing. When Chara kills you, ALL TIMELINES ARE DESTROYED. And Sans knows this happens. That's the only reason why he fights. If you give up, sure, he'll be frozen in his timeline forever. But his brother will be happy in another.
@@user-sx7es7xy4f I don't think he knows that you'll end up destroying the world. He doesn't remember what happens in other timelines, he just knows that they exist, and that you have the power to manipulate them.
@@ediblepencil494nnnope. He knows. " timelines jumping left and right, stopping and starting. until suddenly, everything ends. *that's your fault, isn't it?* "

@@hmbackup6577 At least that's why I think, but MEGALOVANIA isn't Sans's theme and that's confirmed by Toby Fox. Besides they played this two Leitmotifs at the beginning of the genocide section in the UNDERTALE concert
Toby's attention to detail is incredible. The brief references to Toriel and Papyrus' themes at the end - those were the two monsters he was closest to in the underground. The end of the track can then be interpreted as him remembering them and dedicating his final attack to them - especially his brother, whose theme closes out the song.
this has to be my favorite rendition of megalovania, ever. the additions of heartache and bonetrousle, the themes of the two most important people to sans, make this so much more emotional. especially since it is very loud and chaotic at the point they play. so fucking good.
@@harinirajesh3838 2:00 - sans., played at a faster tempo and on a different key than usual 2:08 - Bonetrousle, as it sounds during The Song That Might Play When You Fight Sans
I can still remember the day like it was yesterday. I was sitting on my bed hyped for the new direct just waiting for the direct. Then I saw the man himself, I had a fucking cow lol. Felt like crying, but didn't. seeing as I was one of the people who wanted him since smash 4.
i know you didn't answer me before, but... somewhere in there. i can feel it. there's a glimmer of a good person inside of you. the memory of someone who once wanted to do the right thing. someone who, in another time, might have even been... a friend? c'mon, buddy. do you remember me? please, if you're listening... let's forget all this, ok? just lay down your weapon, and... well, we can play smash instead.
@@mr.monkey354 No? That's not Asgore, that's just Heartache syncopated to 4/4 It only sounds closer to Asgore because that just so happens to be what syncopated Heartache sounds like
with how megalovania's been in practically every project toby's worked on over the years, this triumphant arrangement sounds like this is toby thinking to himself, "look how far i've come."
Well, with the last of the DLC, this game officially reps pretty much every single franchise and major release I've ever enjoyed. This started feeling unreal when Sans was announced and it just kept getting more wild from there.
1:55 Homestuck guitars (I thiiink so anyway) 2:03 heartache sounding as it does in asgore 2:07 bonetrousle I love how this remix manages to include other works. Only thing it's missing is the ending drum and guitars from the actual Undertale version ironically enough
It also includes sans. right before Heartache, bits of Hopes and Dreams can be heard throughout, I'm pretty sure someone is reciting Gaster's final log entry at 0:40, and 1:28 is meant to sound like the intro to the original Halloween Hack version. And yes, that is actually the exact same guitar that was used in Homestuck.
Ohhhh, it's the guitar that makes the leitmotifs. I was confused by another comment just casually pointing out the leitmotifs like they were the easiest thing to hear in the world, but I couldn't hear them at all, saying it like Bonetrousle and Heartache were playing at the same time, and I didn't know what to listen for, it was too chaotic. But your comment made me listen to the guitar specifically at those time stamps, and now I can hear them. So thanks! :)
> be toby fox > indie game dev > make a masterpiece > go to sakurai house > "If i beat u u have to add sans to smash" > challenge accepted > *win* > how
Thinking that a nerdy, weird Homestuck fan with a liking for Nintendo RPGs came to be one of the best and most famous indie creators out there really takes into perspective how anyone can make it big.
If anyone is wondering why exactly the overdriven guitar sounds heavily compressed, it's because FL Studio abandoned their soundfont player. You can still access it, but only on the 32 bit version, which compresses the soundfont player and makes it sound awful compared to the 64 bit version. Back in 2015 when Toby composed Megalovania, the soundfont player was still being supported by FL Studio, so it sounded high quality. I've recreated the entire song and compared these two back to back on FL 32 and yep. The beginning sounds the exact same. There ARE options for VSTs like Sforzando, but they don't give you options like adding attack, decay, release, etc. And they also don't use FL Studio's piano automation [Quick explanation on that. You simply add in a note and put it under another note or on top of it, then double click it and you're taken to a menu where you can change which color coordination you want it to be if you're using chords in your song, and to also make that exact note slide to the other. You can also change the volume via the velocity to slide the note AND change it's volume]. This is an issue since a lot of this song DOES use automation. And sure, you CAN use the track automation, but it's slower since the notes are harder to see. So, you either have no access to easy automation but do have access to high quality music, or you can have access to easy automation but lower quality music. Toby chose the first route, which makes sense since it'd take forever to convert all the soundfont tracks to Sforzando. This could also be why he added in an awesome guitar for the melody [No, not JUST to turn it into a remix]. To hide the low quality notes.
@Loi Valdes No, I'm talking about the iconic intro theme. The guitar is very compressed and it's because of the fact that Toby exported it in FL 32 Bit
@@awesomepossum9330 No, that was a choice Toby decided on since Smash is a very fast-paced competitive game and the music doesn't need any build-up for the beginning drop.
Why does everyone say that this minute 2:03 is Asgore's theme? clearly if we reproduce the original song we will see that in fact it is Toriel's live motive, and it makes more sense because we remember that Sans and Toriel are related a lot in the game along with Papyrus of course 2:08
@@droyconGuitars definitely match Asgore way more though, and the motif itself fits far more into ASGORE than Heartache. Plus, since the songs names do seem to hold some significance in where they play, it makes more sense that the motif is included as a part of Toriels heartache.
No... I'm still not over it... 4 years later, and I'm still astonished by the fact that Sans and Undertale as a whole is in Smash, officially in any way, shape, or form
Very glad this wasn't just the Undertale version. Like I aways thought that the Homestuck version was the best, and it still is, however I think this version of the song represents all versions very well.
@@dinosharttt oh boy you gotta be kidding me Camellia remix is the best one? oh boy i could mention more than 100 remix and covers and they would be still better than that, not to mention this one and the "original one" are made by toby fox and the song is much better than that ur opinion is garbage, sorry to break your bubble but music is not just about opinions theres also better songs that other i bet you play fnf, because ther that remix became popular but jeez man thats not true please, if u still think thats better then L + ratio + bozo + mald + cry + cope + didn't care + didn't ask + get good + ur mom
