Hi yes its quite unbelievable that this Victorian wonder is under the streets of Sheffield well worth a visit with waders and a good torch and spare, thanks for comments and watching Pat
Patrick Dickinson Good torch and *SPARE* ... wise words indeed ... Like everyone else, gobsmacked, never knew this was there, lived in Sheffield all my life (OK, that bit is not true, only 1978 - 84), cracking piece of video, top marks to a classical hand-tooled Yorkshire madman of the first water...
@@patrickdickinson6492 I thoroughly enjoyed this as the desert after my dinner and then just as the music started at the end , a storm was brewing here , becoming very dark with Thunder adding to the whole sense of drama after i had been thinking these tunnels really need to be in a movie , when i realized there had already been a movie with a tunnel system in it ... and a famous one at that : The Third Man with Orson Welles , Trevor Howard , and Joseph Cotten , under the city of Vienna . But Megatron is altogether something else ( ! ) overwhelming and really does deserve be in a movie .... a good one , like The Third Man . Thank you so much for this exploration ...i'm under the impression you were alone ... is this true ? Anything could have happened down there ; very brave you are and i just discovered your channel ; subbed now , of course .
Absolutely wonderful Patrick. I have only recently been made aware of your exploits via the Sheffield "Star". I am now a big fan of yours.I have some photos of when the top of the tunnels were lifted off platform 5 at the station. This was sometime in the early 80's I was a guard on the railway at the time. Keep them coming Patrick you are a star.
Wow, that's amazing Patrick. All that wonderful structural engineering buried below the streets, and hardly anyone knows about it. Brilliant video Patrick, very interesting.
Hi Chris, unbelievable what under the streets and when i spoke to friends etc nobody seemed to know megatron existed even though they had live in Sheffield all there lives, thanks for comments and watching Pat
Andrew Jenkinson Hi Andrew yes to think thistle awesome construction is under the city near Park Square roundabout and the old markets, amazing place it is, thanks Pat
Yes this is basically under Ponds Forge swimming baths and the old market, quite in believable what is hidden away, thanks, I wonder what else lies beneath our feet? Pat
Congratulations on your brilliant photography and filming. The brickwork made for really interesting texture and varied colour. Thanks for taking us on this unusual journey. Btw I've also watched just about all your wild camping videos over the hillsides of Northern England. Keep up the great work. Thanks again Patrick.
Hi and thanks for kind comments, certainly was a awesome place under our Sheffield city streets, and to think it was over 150 years old, amazing. Hopefully have a few more wild camping videos on soon, all the best Pat
Hi Graham, you like me was not aware that this existed, but once I got found out about it, I just had to visit it and find out why it was there, all the best Pat
Hi Paul, same as you I new nothing of this until discovered it on a site called '28 days later' a urban exploration site. Unbelievable that this is under the streets of Sheffield, thanks for watching and comments Pat
Was hoping you did this one following the Porter series. A lot of good planning and time setting up camera/video etc. Really nice work and putting your life on the line for us all. Well done.
Hi Glen a lot of time went into getting the photos as you say but it was enjoyable and interesting trying different techniques, using light-painting, electronic flash and old fashion flash bulbs, that is part of the attraction. thanks for those comments all the best Pat
simes303 I beg to disagree with that statement! One slip or misstep and he could break a leg or drown. He is far from help or any assistance down there and would be in dire straits for a time.
There’s a risk to anything we do every single day. Patrick is quite savvy with his own safety, I’m sure he assessed the risks. Even so, there’s still risks but isn’t it better to live on the edge?
This is probably the 3rd time I've watched this video (maybe even more since I showed it my Mother in law when we visited Sheffield last year). I cannot express how fascinated I am by it. Some 50 odd years ago, I went to school in Sheffield and remember very distinctly standing on the Blonk st bridge wondering what was in that culvert that the River Sheaf came out of and joined the River Don (I don't ever remember anything about the River Porter). If I had known what was just beyond, I might have been tempted to explore a bit, but being only 12 years old, I didn't know how to go about it. My family lived in Sheffield and Rotherham would have been mesmerized too! Thank you Patrick for exploring for us and putting it on RU-vid.
Hi Chris and really nice to hear your comments, I live in Sheffield all my life and it's not untill I followed the Porter to the Station then onto Megatron that I found out about the wonders that lie under the streets of Sheffield, glad it's been of interest to you. All the best for 2019, thanks Pat
What can I say but just fantastic and thank you for taking us all on this journey with you as you said who would know all this existed if it wasn't for people like yourself thank you all the best.
I'm literally gobsmacked. First of all - that this actually exists in my city, and secondly, the level of engineering that existed all that time ago. Thanks for making this video. It's the first of yours I've seen, but I'm going to check some others out now. MASSIVE THANKS!
Hi Nick, welcome to my channel, hope you like my other videos, quite a bit of variety you will find. Megatron is about the most amazing place you will ever visit, especially as it's under the streets of Sheffield, and it's been there for around 150 years, all the best Pat
Well done Patrick, spoken like a true sheffield lad, you make me proud to be from sheffield pal, thanks for doing this, i love it when i find out historical things about sheffield
Hi Conner unbelievable what is under the streets of Sheffield, bit cautious at first but once you get to know the place great place to be, all the best Pat
Hi John I was very pleased with the photographs as it is pitch black down there, you can,t see a inch in front of you when you put the images up on the computer you think wow that looks great, thanks for comments all the best Pat
Pat, another Sheffielder totally unaware of this awesome piece of engineering right there under our feet. Thanks for showing this to everyone. You need to ‘Mudlark’ that debris on the floor, there could be all sorts of history sitting in that debris. Thanks again and stay safe down there!
Yes it's unbelievable that this is under the streets of Sheffield, I have though of using a metal detector down there, who knows what I might find, thanks Pat
Bravo Patrick ~ thoroughly enjoyed this latest video. I'd never heard of Megatron before. What an amazing undertaking and achievement for 1860's. Thanks for the history and the tour. There'd surely be some amazing trinkets and artefacts buried in all that rubble. I'd love to sift through some just for the heck of it. Cheers!
Hi to think there,s 150 years of water been passing through, could be all sorts there probably a lot of scrap and rubbish but who knows. Might have a go with my metal detector one day, thanks for comments Pat
Hi Geoff, really amazing place down there under the streets of Sheffield, you can spend hours down there taking different photographs. Hoping to have a follow up video soon venturing down into the Deep End, watch this space, Pat
Hi must admit when I put the pictures on the computer I was impressed with the quality, the light painting gives the best pictures with perhaps a 90 second exposure, thanks for comments and watching Pat
A classic video that I've been a bit slow in finding. Congratulations, Pat. The number of bricks used must be immense and the construction arduous considering when it was built . Thanks for the explore.
Hi there certainly a awesome place under the streets of Sheffield, the old flash bulbs were a bit of a experiment but gave a massive light output, ideal for this sort of situation, thanks for watching Pat
I'd never heard of the Megatron until I came across this video. Another amazing feat of Victorian engineering, as most was, made all the more interesting, by your excellent, and informative video, which was as well produced as any documentary I've seen. Superb work.
Thanks for those kind words Dave, it is a truely amazing place, could not fail to make a interesting vidio with such a fantastic place to explore, all the best Pat
Another gem of a video Pat . The stone and brick work of the day is still holding its own . You photos are great . This was the second video of yours I've seen and I am enjoying them . I be back for more . Dan from Canada out .
Hi Dan yes to think this is under the streets of Sheffield and was built by Victorian builders over a 150 years ago, glad you enjoyed it maybe difficult to find something to top this, all the best Pat
Hi Sarah, yes agree such magnificent feats of civil engineering, and to think no heavy machinery in those days, just men and hand tools...... thanks Pat 👍
Ogmios Hi yes a amazing place still can ,t believe it's under the streets is Sheffield, I have another Megatron following soon, journey to the deep end, all the best Pat
It would appear very few people new about Megatron including myself until I started researching it, totally amazing what is under the streets, thanks Pat
Bloody brilliant mate. Wish I had the nerve to go down there myself. Thankfully I don't have to because this video made me feel like I was there. Great work pal.
Yeah this one of their most amazing places I,be been, to think it's been under the streets of Sheffield and very few people know it exist. Great to try different photo tequnique s as well, thanks Pat
I have just watched this and the two vids following the Porter. So much better than any of the dross on TV. Thanks so much for taking the time to put these together. Just spied your 10 mile walk and several pints vid so that's next up to watch.
Hi robert I enjoyed making this series of exploration videos, as in my local city and I did not realise that Megatron existed until started researching, really amazing place under the streets of Sheffield, thanks for comments Pat
I've been in the Megatron four times in recent years. Its a good trip if you start in the Porter Brook around Endcliffe Park or Frog Walk at the entrance to the general cemetery as there are loads of different underground sections. You don't need a boat in the Megatron. We swam along it, to the weir, then slid down the weir and swam out into the River Don.It's only knee deep at the bottom of the weir, you wont go under the water although we didn't know that when we first did it. Cheers, Simon.
Hi Simon yes I,be walked the full length of the Porter through all the culverts, I would not fancy wading through the deep part of Megatron when I went down in my dinghy it was 5 foot deep most of the way. At the bottom of the Weir there is a concrete shelf stuck out for 4 foot that's the shollow bit of water you mention after that it's 5 to 6 foot deep and when you cross the Don it gets to 8 foot in places. Still a great place to explore, all the best Pat
Hi Patrick. We had wetsuits and it was fine. Me and my friend Neill did the whole Megatron swim, down the weir and out and across the Don in February this year when there was snow on the ground. We've had many years of caving experience. We're very used to being cold and wet. Good videos, thank you. Simon.
The video was interesting enough to watch just to see such a marvellous system without getting my feet wet, but the fact you stop to tell us the history & take great stills, really puts the icing on the cake, thank you so much for doing your explorations & taking us all along too. Please keep on doing your thing, you have another subscriber :-)
Thanks for subscribing and will hopefully keep you entertained with my adventures, certainly will be difficult to beat Megatron, but I,ll do my best, thanks Pat
Kia ora from New Zealand - thoroughly enjoyed seeing this unbelievable hidden architecture from the 1800's. Incredible brickwork and design, I wonder if modern workmanship will last as long. Thank you for sharing this awesome masterpiece with us.
Hi from new Zealand, nice to hear fro you. Definitely built to last, and amazing construction. There is a 1940/50,s culverts made out of concrete in Sheffield that recently collapsed, I think this Megatron culvert will be here for many years yet. Thanks for watching Pat
Thanks Simon, amazing what is under Sheffield's streets. My Dickinson side of the family were in Broadfield Park Road area in the 1870,s to 1930,s, on the banks of the Sheaf, all cutlers, so I do have historical connections with the river flowing through Megatron. They probably enjoyed a pint in the Broadfield and Crown pubs as well, as I do 100 years later, we have not moved far, thanks Pat
Hi Patrick. I really enjoyed your excellent video about this awesome engineering structure hidden under the streets of Sheffield. It really is a hidden gem. Look forward to watching your other videos about life in and around Sheffield. Thank you.
Pat Gilchrist Hi Pat yes such a lot of history below our feet once you start searching, got a few more drains to explore next year and the some of Sheffield other rivers look interesting, as well as a few wild camps thrown in should be a interesting year, thanks for comments and watching , Pat
Well, considering the Human League herald from Sheffield, I think his advice was spot-on! OK, it wasn't them, but it was their genre of music, and it really suited the video 🎶
Thanks Jeff, out of this world is the only way to describe it, you could put a row of terrace houses down there, all hidden away under the streets of Sheffield........ thanks Pat
He is! I only recently discovered Pat. Awesome adventures. And love his accent. His accent reminds me of a favorite character of mine on pbs LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE. The character is Campo. I love Pat now
Yes Martin the work of craftsmen, to build a structure like this by hand with no mechanical machinery, truely magnificent piece of Victoriaian Engineering, all the best Pat
A kayak would be very useful here. They can go in very shallow water. It's amazing you didn't get lost in those tunnels! Amazing workmanship in those tunnels!
Hi I have kayaked up the Don and into the Megatron outlet, the water inside Megatron is very shallow, you could kayak but would wreck the underneath with scratches and gouges. Thanks for watching, Pat
Thanks for the sub!.....as you maybe aware I,am having a break at the moment, hopefully my older video will keep you entertained, and I'll see you in December..... thanks Pat
What a fascinating engineering and historical 'adventure' to be taken when you can't sleep at 12.44. Cglad I couldn't sleep to have had this pop-up on my youtube suggestions. Subbed :)
Hi Clive, this was on my list to do for a while but initially looked too awesome to explore but bit by bit managed to venture further each time. Quite happy with the whole system now feel quite at home down there. Thanks for comments and watching Pat
Patrick thanks for your reply but like a lot of people we been eagerly waiting for your latest underground exploration ' and we were not disappointed it was good real good ,
Hi nice to hear from you,if you are ever on platform 5 as you come down the steps to the right you will see a 8 foot square of wooden boards on the platform floor, under there is the river Sheaf on its way to Megatron, keep on driving those trains all the best Pat
Very interesting expedition Patrick. Thanks for that! Amazing to think that I’ve passed over that many times and not known it was there. I’d imagine that the left culvert was built deliberately low to aid the construction process. Great vid.....and looking forward to future ones.
Yes unbelievable place down there, just had to explore it all, later vidio shows the final part being explored by dingy, scares me looking at it now, thanks Pat
