imagine riding this whole trail thinking youre in front and then getting to the bottom and finding out that there was someone so far in front of you that you didnt even see him. thats how the next guy felt.
@@bestari5555not if the leader got out front early. especially if the #2 guy made his way up there from a bit further back its definitely possible that there was someone else ahead of him that he didnt know about.
Actually looked up the finish times to see how close this was. The guy in second place finished about 50 seconds later which would mean he was at the iron bridge when Damien crossed the finish.
I tried that with competitive freeride skiing. It was the first time I ever competed, and there was a helicopter with camera crew that were filming each run. Dropping down the mountain, hearing the heli, and seeing its shadow glide across the mountainside below me as I was skiing down.. A truly magical experience. Sadly the following years the budget for the heli was cut, and they used drones instead :(
At 19:28 lets take a moment to thank the guy from Yorkshire who said "Come on mayte, yu fukkein smashin 'em" that is very helpful in a race when you don't know far behind they are!!!
@@Twiggy163 you're right, but sometimes I've seen riders trying to pass where the rider in the front doesn't even have space to get out of the way too. Both riders have to be smart. If one of the two is not, anger or/and crash happens! 😣
I smacked my head on 5 different trees through the forest section. Seriously though, am I the only one that leans side to side when he's going through there?
Juan Hernández This is the Mégavalanche, the rule is simple: if it is not taped, it is allowed. ANYBODY could have done the same. He is an elite-class enduro racer, he saw that line, kudos to him!!!
@@Sisteelin He was state the truth. I paused full screen each time he looked back and he was so far ahead of everyone you couldn't even see the other riders.
this guy waited for everybody else to speed off and fall on the snow then just cruised right past then saved all his energy for the last 15 minutes where he pedaled to victory. they never stood a chance
I am most impressed when the leader gave clear instructions to him one which side to pass. Not the customary 20 minutes of cussing, threats and blocking a pass I am used to seeing.
play it save at the start , waiting for and anticipating mistakes by the others, then these cheeky shortcuts and obviously very comfy with his bike and the course. I lift my hat, sir - this was an impressive show of skill, brains and endurance.
@@z352kdaf8324 I could be wrong but my guess is that it's like other competitive events I've been to where the front rows are reserved for the professional athletes or best qualifiers and the rows behind are for the amateurs to keep things fair for the actual contenders
I think I spent about an hour descending non-stop on the final section (section 28) of the Colorado Trail... but at probably less than *half* the speed of this. Crazy.
Snowbird Ski Area, (Salt Lake City, Utah) has a trail from the top of the tram to the base area that takes most mortals an hour to ride. I'm sure some may flame me on this post 'cause it can be done quicker if you're in shape and know the course like Damien here.
Downhill riders for the most part have killer cardio. You have no idea how much of a workout it is going downhill...you're standing on your pedals, using your legs as shocks most of the time. Not to mention, it's not ALL downhill. He's pedaling even on the downhill sections as well.
In a way, it's almost a must in downhill mountain biking. Natural passing spots are almost non-existent since most of the run is single-track. You either pass on the pedaling zones or hope the guy in front lets you by.
Jason Vermette It's hard to say, but if someone who is much faster rides behind someone rather slow they will have to do unnecessary breaking which builds up extra heat on the disc rotors. And at some point the rotors and pads will be unable to "cope" with the heat so they just fail/break.
I was on this bike every minute. He fricken fell near the beginning. I thought oh shoot. He aint gonna make it now. what a performance. Deserves to win this one. cheers
@@martinmaier352 To be fair they might have been there since the start of the race and decided to cross to the other side without imagining people would get there so soon. Really unfortunate timing. With that said, people should not be anywhere in the tracks at any given point, but that was just unlucky.
How I picture the progression of this race going: "Hey mate, I bet I could out race you through that wooded path" "Oh yea, I bet I could beat you through the wooded path, across that open prairie" "Oh yeah, mate, I bet I could bet you through the wooded path, across that prairie, over that mountain, through 3 ecosystems...and 2 different time zones" "Mate...you're on..."
Haaa!!! I love this comment i bet thats EXACTLY how it went. Thats how it goes with my boyfriend and all his brothers its never ending!!! Good stuff!!!
it's cycling, there's different aspects to all disciplines, none are lame, just different, all take skill, courage and physical endeavour. These guys wouldn't cope going up hill for 10miles twice or 3 times every day for a week, they would be left for dead in a sprint, they would be middle of the pack on a time trial, they'd be very good going downhill. But MTB is different set of requirements in terms of technical, roadies would rarely be able to cope with half of what is in this vid and nowhere near a fast. Just accept that all cycling is good instead of making stupid insults for different types of cycling.
a lot of it is also because when youre riding, you use your legs as secondary shocks and that helps keep you stabalized as well so your head doesnt really move as much as you would think. it would look a lot different if he let just his bike do all of the shock absorbing though lol
thats actually the one annoying thing about this video. its stabilized in post. i just looks so unnatural. i really would like to see an unedited version.
Now that's true mountain biking! Two top competitors fighting for the win and actually signaling each other on which side to overtake. True sportsmanship! And congrats on the training man, well deserved win!
424/5000 Tired of quarantine, I put this video on the computer screen and in front, I locate my elliptical and begin to exercise with my gaze fixed on the screen and my mind focused on the descent. In the end, almost 300 calories burned in 40 minutes, in a little more than 16 kms and the spirit, body and mind feel relieved for the benefit of this mental leak. Thanks for sharing this wonderful descent!

Love the internet, instead of shitting my pants on a bike on a mountain, i can do it in the comfort of my own home watching a guy riding a bike on a mountain.
Awesome win. That shortcut you took near the top was brilliant. For a few moments there I thought you took a wrong turn. Congratulations on winning one hellraising and scary race.
@@tonydamata No no, he was fully allowed to go there its just that the other riders didn't knew about it and thus he passed like 6 ppl or so and also gain a lot of time.
An absolutely captivating 39mins of riding. A pleasure to watch and proof that fancy edits and music don't make great MTB videos. Congratulations Damien!

Brilliant. I’ve watched another who started about 4 rows back and he wasn’t so lucky at the top.Over the handlebars at about 30mph on that tight bend. Great riding man.

Bro, the first dirt they hit was a massive pile of boulders. Thats when I decided that these guys have all made peace with whatever maker they have....
The first time you do this race, you're scared. But you want to race anyway, but most of all you're afraid. Because you don't know how it's going to go down. Once you've done it, you know what to expect the next year. So the next year you're scared, and you're even more eager to race and you're scared too!
Man what a ride Ride of a life time to be exact Mad respect to the riders that was a epic race from beginning to end Love the change in landscape and weather Would love to see a race like this one in Africa
That was an amazing ride he just took us all on. Wow. Well done, Damien. You have mad skills, and great endurance. What a display of your abilities. Congratulations!
