@@georgehernandez5299 No, not even 1 weight division. He was fighting at 147 and at the time of the fight he was the WC at 147!! Then he agreed NOT to go up to 154, which was the immediately higher division, but to fight at 150 (149 actually) which is just 1 kg over the limit of what was his current wight division. If everybody took your logic you'd count every boxer from their first recorded fight.
@georgehernandez5299

But majority of Meldrick Taylor's early success and most of his fight was 140 then he moved up to 147 I always thought he was a small welterweight that was ballsy of him to fight at 149 150 against prime power puncher boxer terry norris even juilo c Chavez never took at that fight they are about the same size give or take
@jason4413

@@nickysan105 Meldrick Taylor was a natural 140 pounder Terry Norris was a natural 154! Period! Was Meldrick a champion at 147? Yes, was this fight fought at catchweight? Yes, Norris was a natural 154 lb fighter, a few years after this fight Taylor dropped back down to 140, because that was his most effective weight, so essentially it was 140 pounder fighting a 154 pounder, on top of being outgunned at this point in his career Taylor was also outsized, I remember thinking at the time that this was a bad matchup for Meldrick, the fight mismatch

Another Disappointment from the Olympic "Class of 1984"! Talented as they were coming up in the Amateurs--Breland, Taylor, Biggs, Page, etc., all that HYPE due to ALL those gold medals was going to produce some sense of extreme over-expectations among the public to these fighters. And when one throws in the "Quick Fight-Quick Buck" people like Duva & his gang, ring burnout was inevitable. Then, these guys move on to the next guy & the poor fighter is left to figure out a life without Boxing--Or that Big Fight Money.

Oh, please... Taylor had had 5 consecutive wins right before facing Norris. And furthermore, at the moment of the fight he was the WBA World Welter Champion, a title he had defended successfully twice immediately before fighting Norris, and great for Taylor, he was fighting at only two pounds above the 147 lb limit of his own Welter title weight. And even better for Taylor, he didn't even have the pressure of having to defend his title, only Norris' WBC World Super Welter title was at stake in the fight.

It's crazy I recently watched the Chavez fight again a few times and I just don't the "brutal destruction" of Taylor's body until the LAST TWO rounds. Taylor was only taking occasional shots up until the 10th and not many in that round. Just the 11th and 12th.

Richard steel was a horrible ref with many controversial decisions but they kept using him in big fights. The Chavez loss ruined Taylor.. He should've never went up in weight class. He wasnt ready.
@nickysan105
@nickysan105 4 года назад
Steele was the best referee the sport has EVER seen. Bar none. Taylor was holding on to the ropes and looking to the horizon. He only needed to look to the referee, say yes and bring his hands up. He was unable to do a single one of those things. But somehow you are ok with Mills Lane stopping this fight with Taylor on his feet and able to block Norris' shots... Double standards anyone... It the loss ruined Taylor no one can do anything about it, it had to ruin him. But perhaps the honest thing to do would have been for Lou Duva not to attempt to milk any more money of a person that was in clear danger after that fight.

Who, Duva And Benton?!?? You know nothing, Jon whatever. Duva and Benton were TOO fond of their fighters and would give in to their demands on the idea that if they don't let them take a dangerous fight, Some other Managers with ties to promoters they hate would Poach their fighters doing them even worse. Duva was many things, but GEORGIE BENTON would never have stayed with him if he didn't have the boys best interest in mind.

So, is it fair to look at this fight as a "cash out" type fight, that being, if I'm understanding the term correctly, taking a "name" and throwing him into a fight that, realistically, he seems to have no hope of winning? Going off the pre-fight, did HBO's Lampley and Merchant, truly see Taylor having a chance? I mean, they even mention how they noticed that no one related to the sport is giving Taylor any chance! They themselves mention that the fight doesn't need them hyping it up, but it seems that's exactly what's up. Duva is openly saying he's concerned with Meldric's recent, post Chavez performances, and it seems Meldric alludes to his team being against his taking this fight. Actually, I'm writing this as i watch it and that illusion Taylor made to his possibly going against the advice of his team to take this fight, well...I do feel a bit better about things if that's what actually happened because, otherwise, it truly seems his backers were just washing their hands of him while getting a last surefire payday Last though, that 20/20 hindsight stuff, somewhat humorously chiming in with a cameo appearance when both Lampley, and Norris, just a little bit himself, bring up Terry's, I guess, bad luck, in that his three biggest victories up to that point weren't getting him the credit he was yearning for cause those fighters were seen as past it, and despite HBO's position that this was gonna a competitive fight, it didn't look so at the end, and Terry's fourth big win over a "name" looked like, and basically got him the same credit as the three previous wins did

2 to 1 betting is not that bad. Barrera was down 5 to 1 against Hamed!! Talk about no chance... To me, the most interesting subtext here, equally interesting in Taylor's fight against Crisanto España, is the unspoken fear of major damage to Taylor, something you could not totally comprehend at the moment unless you knew that Chavez had sent Taylor to the hospital for an entire month. There seems to be an agreement by everyone inside the game to stop the fight immediately before risking Taylor's life, the referee does it much much before I have seen in mostly every other fight, and the commentators do not show a gram of doubt about the stoppage, when in many other fights they'd vie to give the champion a chance to fight... Very very curious indeed... It's like every one is aware they are doing something they shouldn't be doing, that Taylor shouldn't really be fighting unless he was assured to not get hit...
@mariosanchez8236
@mariosanchez8236 4 года назад
@@nickysan105 Barrera vs Hamed was 3-1, but still, not good. Man, the Chrisanto Espana KO is bad. Shoulda called it on the uppercut that put him down. Mills Lane stopped the Chavez rematch somewhat similar too this, maybe a bit earlier in comparison to what he did here, and Showtime's crew was understanding. Actually, right after the stoppage, Bobby Cyzz (never remember spelling) or Ferdie Pacheco mention a conversation with Lane they had the day before where he said to them he would not let him take a brutal beating

I hate how condescending Lampley and Merchant are to Foreman. Big George was the smartest man in the ring that night, saying Taylor should throw some punches and then move. I doubt there was any way Taylor was going to win this fight, but he would have lasted a lot longer if he would have had Foreman in his corner.
