Hey @turndownforwalt, I'd love to see a video of this nature exploring the intricate play styles of top players. And more specifically, how when opposite play styles/natures intersect on the top stage of Melee! It's a specific request, but I could see so clearly you making a topic like this work eloquently in a video! Obvious suggestion would be Mang0 vs Hbox but do your thing!!! All love, huge fan, keep up the fantastic work!!
Same man same, I could feel my blood pressure rise as I hear yet another bunch of closed minded people shitting on something they either don't understand or wished they understand. AND YET NOW THEY'RE ALL HERE BECASUE THEY REALIZE MONEY IS TO BE MADE FROM THIS! man I hate boomers 🤣
@@jaysean9589 well I would say Chess isn't a sport because it doesn't have an aspect of physicality like Melee and traditional sports do. The same thing with poker. If someone who is paralysed can compete at a high level (theoretically possible in Chess and Poker) it probably isn't a sport. Man just look at the word sport. What a weird looking word
@@turndownforwalt Nah, that one is on content-creators like you. It's sad that such a great player and person, with ton's of remarkable footage is always reduced to this one game only. If you look him up on youtube you find plenty of sets of him playing top players in top8 or GF of tournaments. Random example: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wJcyV5RpCJw.html
@@EsperSpirit People feature this set because it's one of the greatest Axe moments, not because they want to dunk on Silentwolf. Axe constantly 4 stocks random people on stream, this moment is so iconic because he managed to do it against a good player like Silentwolf in tournament, even the greatest sets have to have a loser after all, doesn't mean it's shameful.
Boomer: “It’s not a sport, it’s a game!” So what’s basketball, is it not a game? What about a sport like ping pong? It’s mostly technique. Are they not athletes?
The day that Melee is a solved game is the seventh sign of the apocalypse. Melee is the ultimate dynamic experience; every outcome and situation is unique and being able to take in that data and improve your chances of winning is so exhilarating.
Part of the iceberg you've scratched at reminded me an overlong quote below from Infinite Jest. It's actually about tennis, in place of Melee, though I think there are many unrealized parallels between the two. I hope you find this quote meaningful and illuminating. "The true opponent, the enfolding boundary, is the player himself. Always and only the self out there, on court, to be met, fought, brought to the table to hammer out terms. The competing boy on the net’s other side: he is not the foe: he is more the partner in the dance. He is the what is the word excuse or occasion for meeting the self. As you are his occasion. Tennis’s beauty’s infinite roots are self-competitive. You compete with your own limits to transcend the self in imagination and execution. Disappear inside the game: break through limits: transcend: improve: win. Which is why tennis is an essentially tragic enterprise… You seek to vanquish and transcend the limited self whose limits make the game possible in the first place. It is tragic and sad and chaotic and lovely."
@@kirbydk3896 Actually, with the exception of Smash Ultimate and Melee (and also a bit of Pokémon), I dont really watch esports or any sport whatsoever. However, with Smash I becomes as hyped as the most fanatic Football/ Baseball/ whatever other sport player as a spectator (as well as a very excited gamer with eager to compete when it comes to _playing_ Smash as well).
I love what you said about recognizing players by their styles. I can see an up-throw rest and bair train from one player and a marth fairing at ledge from the other and tell its hbox vs m2k without needing to see the player cams or nametag.
I just love how he brought up the argument that any Melee fan can tell you who is playing even without playercams and such, it is the perfect (hehe) example to show how expressive this game can be which for many people is a big reason why they are so passionate about it. Good shit waltz, each video you make gets me more hyped about Melee!
Can people stop calling TASes tasbots? Tas bot is the name of the ROB toy that holds a raspberry pie at gdq and tas is the sequence of button presses that are made to perfectly beat a game or show something off. Even the tas blocks at gdq are called TAS BLOCKs not TAS BOT BLOCKs
The messi thing is completely wrong. He suffered a disease that prevented him to grow, but he was insanely good at football. Barcelona paid for his treatment and trained him after.
I wanna be your friend too! Hi! See you in a future melee video. I miss my guy vextos I used to run into like you guys do. Hope he's all good these days.
In a summer camp for the arts, my teacher told me, “you strive for perfection so you can achieve excellence.” And those words ring true with melee and me to this day
Melee is an unbelievably deep game that gives it a very complex culture, and I've used your videos to help me articulate feelings to myself that I knew I had but couldn't explain. You have done an incredible job, on this video and all of the rest, giving new players like me a beginnings to being part of a community that was otherwise too intimidating to dive into. Thank you!
Sports have rules. Games have laws. The key difference between those two and arguably why esports competition is more 'fair'. Most traditional sports are better for health though.
Amazing stuff man, and an incredibly eloquent way to say how I think many of us feel about the game! I often like to find ways that top players' personalities shine through in their gameplay (whether that be how reserved, aggressive, methodical, or how they react in high pressure situations), and I feel like Melee allows for that more than any other competitive game that I'm familiar with. And after all, self expression is what we should strive for most when playing the game, and in living our lives. As for how your engineering job/YT career is gonna pan out, I can only say that I consider the quality of your videos to be like the quality of play from a top player in Melee, and I think you express yourself greatly through that. Like you really put in an insane amount of work every time out, and it's honestly crazy how you haven't grown the channel even faster than you have. But like Zain, and all the other competitors who've come up with a similar brand of grind, I know you'll reach far beyond 100K someday if that's what you want. And either way, I'm wishing you the best my guy. Congrats on 10K :)
You're work is "simply charming" Walt. Love what you've done on the channel man. As I have said before, every video seems to pull me in with its subtle depth/uniqueness. Keep it up!
1:48 "It's a game!" And football, basketball, baseball, soccer, etc. are what, exactly? I can't believe how myopic these people were. 1:53 How do they think watching esports is fundamentally different from watching sports?
Nobody can do what you do better than you Walt. You bring your own take and style that many of us love. Sure somebody else can do a good job, but it wouldn't be like your art work 💜 the community appreciates you :)
I've never subscribed to someone as a Patreon. But if I ever do you're my first choice. You have such an eloquent way of elaborating these histories that I can attach to and value as somebody whose been playing melee competitive since just before the doc was released. Here's to hoping your passion maintains
That was really incredible Walt, most people just argue why esports are sports with the same couple reasons I.E. Payment, practice, mental ability... but this is the first video I've seen where style and mental perseverance were key features as well. I say it pretty much every video you post but thank you so much for the content you produce, its truly wonderful
This is some really high quality content, if you keep putting stuff out like this I’m sure you’ll be rewarded for you effort. I’m sure once melee picks back up again and the new documentary comes out this channel will explode.
I’m one of those new viewers that you have crossed paths with and this video has me rightly enthralled. The comments are showing lots of promise for your other videos too which is always a good sign. Subbed! Here’s to the first step to 100k subs, and to all the melee to be played in 2020. Cheers bro
Don't undersell yourself man. You make some of the best videos on the site. You're criminally underrated, and I'm happy to whenever I see your videos in my feed :)
Everything you make is so amazing and I really don't know how you don't have 100k. But for now, congrats on 10k and I look forward to all the future milestones I know you'll hit.
you seriously only have 16k subs? i fr thought you had so much more telling by your quality. youre on another level of insight and you deserve so much more attention
Well done, mate. Beautiful piece. Definitely spoke to me. My passion is writing, and what you said about wanting to leave an impact and the drive to do better resonated.
What a great video Knowing that perfection is impossible is kinda motivating, since like my goal was always being perfect, and I'd often get upset with minor mistakes
Thanks! I'm definitely not in 4:30 mile shape anymore (not even close), but it's still a cool accomplishment to have reached that time. Thanks for the support!
I still appreciate the close community we've developed so far, and I think it'll only grow from here! Thank you though, and looking forward to hearing more from you soon!
What about HBox? He's still my favorite Melee player. Despite what modt people say, I find the matches with Hungrybox to be the most interesting and exciting ones to watch, especially the ones where "ClutchBox" comes in.
*smashes red button* *clicked bell icon->All* Absolutely incredible video, my guy. Followed the twitch stream as well in case I ever catch you live. Keep up the amazing work!
I recently had a falco ditto on netplay, where we played exactly like I one another. It was freaky. I've never seen anything like it. It's not like I'm unique or anything, but melee is just so expressive that it's bizarre to see similar players. I told my wife about it and she understood the concept so well that she suggested that it may have been an AI mimicking my style LOL. While that's a bit out there, I love how it seems more likely than actually finding two melee players who play the same way.
Another interesting one for people getting cut at high school level and then going on to being the best. Brian O'Driscoll, probably one of the best centers in Rugby ever, was cut from both junior and senior teams in "high school" in Ireland for being too small.
Walt your videos are what convinced me that e-sports definitely are sports. This is another amazing video and I can't wait to see what you do next! Congrats on 10k!
For me jt really just comes down to showing them a melee set, asking them if they can do that with money on the line, crowd, etc. No? Okay then. The studying situations and plays, matchups, to put all that at the front of your focus is any sports task.
I'm the new guy, and I'm glad YT decided to send me your way. I'm trash at melee, but it's probably half of the content I consume. The good impression is made because you express well why melee is worth loving.
Honestly this makes me think about the thought process of some of my favorite mma fighters. Dominick Cruz comes to mind. He literally took bits and pieces of multiple styles and made his own and grinded his ass off. I'll never get the whole " not real sport" argument though. Competition and the urge for growth are in everything. Fuck mario party though.
MMA is a great parallel and it can certainly be applied to the topics of this video! I completely agree with you - competition and a desire for improvement are a part of almost everything!
I love it. My another great piece of content. Seems like you can do it all man. Combo vids, game analysis, and more longform stuff. I think melee's goal of king of the hill and not reducing hp makes it so that there are so many correct answers to any situation that the answer you choose really help define peoples personal playstyles. Also commenting for engagement because youtube is SUUUUUUUPER dumb. Much love, keep doing what you're doing man.
Fantastic video. Great editing, great script, and the footage you captured yourself (I assume? the running footage) looked clean and fit really well in the video. I don't know how you keep improving your analysis and content but I'm sincerely excited to see what you do next! This was a very entertaining watch (:
Thank you! The footage was a combination of my girlfriend recording me on a gimbal and drone shots by me - they're a lot of fun to include! Looking forward to hearing from you in the next one!
This video was amazing. I'm going through a very similar path. I was a cross country runner but stopped. I want to try and become a computer engineer, video editor, and gamer all at the same time. And you achieving all of those things is inspiring and makes me think: if he can do it, I can too.
