All signs pointed to a return of the prince that was promised. A great winter had begun its silent, freezing creep, and the land of Westeros was filled with petty squabble oblivious to the greater peril of the world. Using prayer and flame, the red priests of R’hllor, the Lord of Light, strove to make their mark and guide events in the direction their deity desired. The most active of R’hllor’s servants in A Song of Ice and Fire was Melisandre. Hello everyone, and welcome back to Exploring Fiction. Dubbed the red woman, or the red priestess, Melisandre sailed from Asshai to Dragonstone, where she became advisor to King Stannis Baratheon, who she believed to be Azor Ahai. Through her study of the flames and other mystical abilities, Melisandre grew to be a driving force behind many actions and reactions in the War of the Five Kings and beyond. She took an active approach to doing her Lord’s will, and thus shaped the world in the way she thought to be best. Though Melisandre’s most important part to play may be yet to come, she already proved her competence as a red priestess. So, who exactly is Melisandre, and why is she such an interesting character? Let’s explore…

I considered it likely that she´s both trying to make Stannis the king, and smuggle herself to the position of his new wife. Everything about her makes that conclusion logical.

Its not for sure she was born in Asshai. Some say Hardhome hundreds of years before the time of the story.

True... kinda just played if up for narrative purposes since her birth is so shrouded in mystery

No where does it say she was born in Asshai, child can't survive there. Also maesters aren't a religious order.

Yeah, addressing that second part, I suppose the way I worded things makes it seem like I confused maesters and septons, so that's my bad. Thankfully, I think the idea still stands that Cressen was the main proponent of the Seven on Dragonstone though

Wait, babies can be born in Asshai, but cannot survive in Asshai, correct?

As far as I'm aware, that is correct!

That is only what maester’s who’ve never been to Asshai say! GRRM doesn’t think the Citadel would truly know.

Where did you get the idea Melisandre birthed whatever killed Renly? She never said that's what happened. Stannis never said that's what happened. And the readers never see this event occur.

To be honest, out off all the things to theorize about, I feel like that event is pretty universally agreed upon. But who do you think did it?

It's pretty universally agreed. We see renly die from the shadow monster then we see from davos pov her give birth to an identical looking shadow of stannis
