Showing the areas to port and smooth transitions for better wet, flow characteristics. Also discussed bypass spring application.
Rule of thumb number 1 you need 10# of oil pressure for every 1000 RPMs of engine rotation.
Rule of thumb number 2 you need 1 quart of oil capacity per 10 pounds of oil pressure.

I have seen the gears get dimpled, have you done this or know why they do it?
@HeadFlowInc
@HeadFlowInc Год назад
I have also seen it where they add. Dimples, I have not personally added any dimples. The concept would be boundary layer or film to try and reduce frictional Parasitic losses. It would be a lot of work to get everything smooth out perfectly, kind of makes you ask, if it’s worth it?

Is it possible to do a video porting the pilot pump?

Help, I’m not familiar with a Pilot pump, is it a brand or application? I need more details. JD

Are Melling steel and stellite valves a viable replacement for GM valves for a 243 head?
@HeadFlowInc
@HeadFlowInc Год назад
I wasn’t aware Melling made stellite valves for the LS, I thought those were Ford specific. You want a quality stainless valve; I use Ferrea, Manley and Renegade Pro. Sorry, if Melling has them listed for an LS then they should be compatible. JD

@@HeadFlowInc this is just my daily driver with a mild cam for pulling a few gears now and then. No racing…. SS valves seem to cost about $500 for a full set. Did the original valves in the C5 corvettes come in SS? Am I being unrealistic?
@HeadFlowInc
@HeadFlowInc Год назад
@@bat5917 your factory valves are more than good enough for whatever you’re wanting to do no reason to replace them. All of our last cylinder heads have a non-ferrous stainless exhaust valve.

The Allison clutches came from eBay from Transmissionjobber. All my clutches came from eBay, if you know how to navigate Rockauto they have crazy deals on clutches. JD

What types of bits normally to port them? And do you do anything with pressure relief valve passage or the relief plunger itself? And comparisons of idle pressure hot stock 10296 vs ported 10296? Just curious to see how the porting affect pressure and what to expect for an increase

I use a 5/8” double cut tree, 1/2” double cut egg, 3/8” double cut egg plus sanding rolls. The High Volume Melling pumps come with thicker gears to improve volume and usually have an assortment of Bypass Pressure relief springs. Stock 60#, 70# and 80# I do not alter the bore for the pressure relief setup. I started shimming the stock relief spring .100” to bump it to 70#. I do not recommend running a stock 60# spring in any application turning above 5300 rpms because it starts by passing at +-5300 rpms not good. I focus in eliminating casting flash edges in the intake & more importantly radius the outlet from pump gears to housing then smoothing the dogleg path from the gears to the block. (you’ll see/feel the areas needing work). If you get the spring assortment there’s no need to shim. Warning: if you want to run the 80# spring it’s highly recommended you have at least an 8 quart oil capacity. I also recommend running 6-7 quarts when using a 70# setup. JD

Trying my 3rd pump swap on brand new 427 ls3 long block with c5 batwing pan. Have perfect oil pressure worth both 10355 pump 70psi spring and 10296 60psi everywhere but under load in gear. Both pumps oil pressure drops after 4300rpm and 10355 drops the least amount but dropping to 43-45psi by 6400rpm. Now trying a ported m365 pump with a 60psi spring then playing with oil weight. 10296 is make 30psi hot idle 5w30 synthetic. 10355 unported did 37psi hot idle 10w30. Also thrust was 0.008” when I double checked. Oil pressure rises with both pumps 10psi per 1000rpm under partial load and can free rev hold in neutral with both pumps and makes relief pressure. But won’t make or stay at relief pressure under wot in gear

@@chriswalker2718 Something is definitely off, I try to never run a 60# spring unless I shim it .100”. Delay the bypass. I’m really curious why you have the same pressure issue with two different pumps. Are you using a new cam retainer plate and good barbell? Also, what brand oil filter? How many quarts of oil in the crankcase?
@chriswalker2718
@chriswalker2718 Год назад
@@HeadFlowInc played around with oil level. Added .5-1 quart didn’t do anything. Tried a quart less made it drop from 3000rpm. Has an improved racing double o-ringed barbel. Removed the improved racing baffles from pan a tried that didn’t change anything. Only have driven oil so far. Br30 and hr2 and ls30 all had same issue. Put a mechanical gauge on verified that it was actually dropping. 6.5-7quarts in crank case. Brand new cam retainer.

Do you think it could be leaking at the o-ring on the pickup tube causing aeration?

Did you find a solution or conversion for that holley and mechanical gauge showing differently?
@HeadFlowInc
@HeadFlowInc Год назад
Not yet, I’ve been told not to worry about it as long as it runs good. Also I was told there’s a difference between the unit of measurement between the Holley and my mechanical gauge using hg. 🤷‍♂️ My OCD would prefer both the mechanical gauge and Holley to read the same!
