Everything this season has focused on stories. The ones we make up to explain what's going on around us and sometimes blind us to the reality that is happening. Space Babies: a "monster" was made to fit the story and was a danger while trying to save the station. Devil's Chord: The belief the world "grew up" and didn't need music no matter what was in their hearts Boom: They're at war with an enemy not realizing it's their own equipment causing their casualties 73 yards: The mysterious woman is a threat and has to be feared. Dot and Bubble: Everything is fine, ignore the lesser people telling you you're in danger Rogue: Rogue is sure there is one shape shifter and that's the Doctor The Legend of Ruby Sunday: Susan Triad is the Doctor's granddaughter and is the key, oops, wrong anagram. Empire of Death: Ruby's mom is super important and is a threat to Sutehk In every case, the way things seem distract people from the actual danger. Also, that Christmas on Ruby Road is a fragile point in time. Between the goblin incursion, the Doctor taking the Tardis there, and then Sutekh taking the Tardis there again it allowed Ruby to link back to that point in her own timeline. Whenever she was thinking hard about it, whenever she was feeling abandonment. Now remember back in the season 3 finale.(Tenth, Martha, The Master) Psychic energy focused on the Doctor briefly gave him godlike power. I feel that all the people focusing on Ruby's mom one that night was focusing psychic energy on her. She didn't know that though. She was just a scared 15 year old girl, terrified about what would happen if someone saw her and her stepdad found out. Focused on getting her baby somewhere safe and staying hidden. With the psychic energy of a god flowing into her. The more Sutekh strained to find her, the harder she was to find.

The Doctor accidentally introduced supernatural elements into the known universe. The mystery of Ruby's mother became much larger and more powerful than it would've been otherwise. Because it's a story. The story of a girl left at the steps of a church on Christmas Eve who traveled with a man through time and space to find her mother.

I loved the mom reveal. Are some of the setups a bit too much for it, maybe? But "everyone is important" is a message that keeps coming up in Doctor Who. Even earlier this season there was talk about faith in Boom. At the start I went in hoping that the mom wouldn't be some god or time lord a relative of the doctor or Ruby herself, or whatever theory there was in the early episodes. The only thing that didn't work for me was the pointing for the name, the memory changing. Take that away I really like where they went with it and the season as a whole. Still wish there were 1-2 more "normal" episodes, mostly because I just really like the two together. Give us more!

Not clicked a video so fast in my life. I knew her being ordinary would confuddle you. I also was like Jay when Ruby met her mum. I am an adoptee myself so that moment b4ought back all the feels i had that day. Also we havent seen the last of Ruby.

I had so much fun with this season, I can’t wait for this Christmas!

Now remember... There's still a good 50% chance Mrs Flood is infact just an auld woman. I refuse to duped again 😂

Setting up Ruby being special… well… Season 2. Russell said that the whooooole family isn’t done yet. So. Maybe there’s more to the story. We’ll see.

I think they didn't quite hit some points that would've helped to understand the whole thing- that the Time Window is what caused the snow to go back in time around Ruby, as it happened everytime she thought of her mother or abandonment, as well as when Maestro forced it out of her. They mentioned the oldest one, and I think that was alluding to Sutekh. Then, within the Time Window, her mother seems to almost interact with them as Ruby cries out for her over and over. She turns, and points at the sign, and I think that was meant to be a psychic link sending that message back in time to make it happen. They really didn't explain this enough, and this is only my idea of it, might not even be right. However, as a mother, I do really appreciate that in the end the most powerful being in the world was a 15 year old girl making an extremely courageous decision to give up her baby for her safety. Such an awful, traumatic, but inspiring, and yet everyday situation. This happens everyday around the world, of course. But its one of the ultimate human acts of love. I think after the aliens and sci-fi fun that Doctor Who is about humanity, and so this makes complete sense to me. I dislike the people playing this down that the reveal was 'nothing' ... I think it was powerful. Unfortunately RTD didn't quite stick the landing to fully show or say that in the episode. Just saying 'she's important because we think she is' .. was too simplistic, and it really needed to focus more on this human act of love.

Call back to 11 with Ruby's mom. 11 told someone "I've never met someone who wasn't important."

I loved this finale, and the closure on Ruby's mother was, for me anyway, pitch perfect. Ruby had spent so long looking for the truth and in doing so had evolved a myth around her own birth, a myth that confused and terrified the Gods of Chaos themselves. And yet, in the end, the answer lay in a scared 15 year old: an ordinary person enacting an extraordinary act of kindness for her baby daughter. That's Doctor Who. I know a lot of people have felt let down by this episode, though, and that's valid. But I do also think that this disappointment stems from a belief that the mystery was intended to serve a different purpose within the narrative than the one it actually does, and that's left people feeling frustrated at the series as a whole for not delivering a satisfying ending. The point of the mystery was never about the identity of Ruby's mother. It was about Ruby creating her own story - a legend of sorts - and the power that came from that; an otherwise ordinary event became mired in crossed timelines, imbued with the magic of goblins and ancient gods and became a creation myth - a myth that challenged the God of Death himself. The snow and Christmas carol were parts of this myth, too. Both were aspects of that one night that became Ruby's memories, eventually bleeding through into reality thanks to the lingering effects of the Toymaker. Overall, a fantastic finale that more than sticks the landing from a thematic perspective. A solid 8/10.

I agree with Adam’s face. That explanation of Ruby’s mother and also why she pointed doesn’t make a lick of sense! I think more will come out next season.

I really like what they did, because they practically built a whole myth around her mom which made her important, God's are part of myths themselves they have their involvements in them like stories of what they did and who they are and in this new era of Doctor Who where superstition and myths are running rampantly all around now with the Doctor having fought gods of the pantheon three times in a row now which building up someones story surrounding a person in that way while it might feel "Disappointing" because she's nobody, she isn't... Nobody necessarily at all, she's ruby's mother, she brought her into this world and she's important for doing that, as our own mothers are important to us for bringing us into the world. That and RTD came out and public said he really enjoyed what the Last Jedi was trying to set up about Rey

Big finish time!!! Lucie (Louise) Miller is a character from big finish, she was in a relationship with William Foreman (Susan's son). Long story. So Ruby is kinda the Doctors Great Great Granddaughter.

The snow kept happening because of the Tardis perception filter. That day on ruby road was a fixed point and therefore very delicate so ruby trying her best to remember that day with the very grainy VHS tape is why snow kept happening. Its not too different from Rose becoming the Bad Wolf and sending the words through time and space to bring her to that moment.

I really hope they make the next episode soon But i kinda slowly grew to understand the whole power of importance, since like it wasn't just the people who gave this lady such high importance, but in a way sutek as well, so in turn his power was in ruby to keep her alive, so that he can finally learn who this woman was, which would explain maestro freaking out about the power she had, she compared it to the one who waits, cause he was there, and ruby is the only way he'd learn who the mysterious mother is

I'm fine with the reveal, I didn't want another kid of a time lord or Ruby being the child of a god or something anyway.

I was fine with EVERYTHING- the snow, the God of Death desperate to know who mom is only to find out she's just a normal person‐ ALL that I can totally get behind- except the pointing at the sign. That makes zero sense. All the rest? I'm good. But she should never have pointed. That's stupid.

Id like to think Sutekh being on the Tardis and witnessing the mystery of Ruby Sundays mother is what elevated her to being so important. Surekh willed if by accident. But that doesn't explain the snow!

The revelation about Ruby's Mom was such a letdown. Like I get the idea behind it but the execution was lacking. Still, an enjoyable if flawed finale.

MY theories for this weeks ep... We know Ruby's story is not done. Though I do think RTD dropped the ball in communicating that leaving people frustrated. MY takeaways... Ruby herself has a perception filter as hinted in dialogue. Why did the Doctor not want Ruby to talk to her mother (out of character). Is she really Ruby's mother or is a plot a foot. Is Ruby's father related ot Mad Jack (Ap Gwilliam (of William) Her father's name is William. With the reveal that 73 yards is the range of a perception filter when it becomes more apparent that old Ruby (Jack's Herald) wasn't telling people terrible things, she was showing them terrible things, they all look directly at Ruby before they freak out. Does standing at the very edge of the perception filter cause it's effect to sort of glitch and you see what's really real? Finding Ruby's mother was far too easy, and none of Maestro or Sutekh's dialogue work if she is just some random teen mom. For a few scenes I was almost convinced UNIT set up a fake mom just to make Ruby stop looking for now

No, we did NOT "make Ruby's mom special". We believed she was special because the SHOW has said she was special from the start.

of course, we haven't met Ruby's father yet. i'm still going for creature disguised as human like Peter Quill's dad. that said, i like the idea of the thing / person we give absolute importance too becomes absolutely important [weirdly reminds me of American Gods and how the old gods survived]. now ... about Mrs. Flood. is that a sonic umbrella? is she the new Mistress? her laughing with grandma saying "that clever boy" - is she evil [old] Clara? also, your whole Pokemon bit makes me want to see Sutekh as a Yu-Gi-Oh card.

The cloak Mrs Flood wears at the end is the same one worn by Romana (back in Tom Baker days) before she regenerated. Also, when the Doctor and Ruby talk at the end, the Doctor is fiddling with the ring Rogue gave him.

They didn't explain why it snows around Ruby. Or the song Maestro heard in her heart. A few too many threads hanging around Ruby herself. But the Sutekh stuff was great.

I had the exact same reaction to you guys on the ruby/mom reveal. It felt like a let down. I get where rtd was going but like... my guy you were the one who put magic and gods in this season. You opened the door. For it to then be like, no! Shes important because shes so nORmAL was like... ok 😅 I just wanted ruby to be a demigod or something but maybe thats just me idk 😂

I think Ruby will be back next season at least for a little and there will be an episode surrounding her father. I suspect maybe her father will be the parent that gives her, her snowy abilities. The maestro said something like, HE couldn’t have been there when referring to Ruby. What that means, we have yet to discover. If her hinting toward her dad and there still being questions left unanswered about her whole thing I think it’s plausible.

I didn't care about the mother reveal. I could take it or leave it. But the thing I actually didn't like was the reveal as to why she pointed. To name her? Just leave a note in the basket that says "Her name is Ruby."

The "she's important because we think she's important" is a great concept for an episode story, for a series arc it's disappointing and a let down.

RTD said Ruby is back next season and a second companion that is played by someone we've already seen this season. You can google if you want to know.

Yeah, my suspension of disbelief, while it has a pretty far off threshold, they were really testing it with, "the mythology we pour into this makes it manifest." Not knowing her mom, but caring a whole about it, makes literal snow materialize and protects them from multiple paracausal beings lol Definitely gave me Last Jedi vibes. It's not that we are upset that the character might have "mundane" parentage, it's that the creators played it up as a major importance only to pull the rug out from under the audience. Feels like a middle finger to the fans, y'know?

This episode was pretty great... but then ruined by how hard they fumbled Ruby's story. I wouldn't mind if she wasn't special. I wouldn't mind if she *was* special. But it's like RTD tried to have it both ways, and their "explanations" just... don't make sense. "She's important enough to hide from Sutekh because we thought she was important" -- but *everyone* is important to someone. Sutekh would have full face blindness all the time if that were how it works 😅 And does that mean there are people who were born on a beach who, because they think their parents are important, now make tsunamis appear whenever they're emotional? And how the hell was pointing to the sign "naming Ruby" when *no one but the Doctor was around to see it?* AND she didn't point at first, the memory changed -- so what, time changed so she could name her baby the same name she got anyway, to one stranger who had nothing to do with it, without saying a word for communication? Just.... ugh. Everything else was great, but that... brought the episode from a 9/10 to a 6.5/10 for me. So disappointing.

I love the idea that Ruby's mom was ordinary after all the importance put on her, that was very Tolkien, but I agree with Adam that the writing wasn't... quite... there. RTD did a few too many ominous build-ups and tricks. Why did the Doctor's memory keep changing? Why is Ruby's mom shrouded? If she's a registered nurse, then Davina McCall should've easily found her. Why did Ruby's mom point at that sign (to a complete stranger who didn't pass the message along) instead of, y'know, leaving a note? And that sign/lamppost isn't in the Christmas special, so RTD hadn't planned this twist from the start. Oh well, it was still a sweet end, and there's still the mystery of Mrs Flood...

It's a fairly common trope in fantasy that what gives a god power is belief. With the way RTD seems to be integrating mythology into this variation of the show, Ruby's mom being important because the characters *believed* she was important fits right into that. (Not to mention, RTD's used this trope before with Martha walking the Earth to spread belief in the Doctor.) ...that said - it was full summer during the episode, yet snowing during Mrs. Flood's speech, so I wouldn't be surprised to see Ruby back again.
