Memory Man Review 

Thanks everyone for watching! I tried different power supply’s, amps and cords. The fuzzy noise is only on the repeats! I have other analog delay pedals don’t have unwanted noise on the repeats! I really did want to like this pedal! I will probably take it back. Please let me know what you think.

I'm so glad I watched this before I went back to my pedalboard because I noticed a lot of noise when I added the Nano, and I was ready to tearing the board down to figure out where it came from. But for the noise, it's a solid pedal.

Great honest review! I have this pedal and it is quiet by comparison. Only if I have the amp up very high, and guitar volume low can I hear noise, and even then it is not at the level of yours. I wonder if yours is defective?

Good, honest review here Rusty. The pedal certainly has a great sound when you are having at it, but the noise is a tough one to get past. I have some pretty big meat hooks here myself, so I'm not sure the small knobs would be a good fit. Very thorough in your analysis. Great job my friend!

The reason most 70s bucket brigade delays had really dark repeats was because they used filters to eliminate the clock noise you’re hearing. And the reason the original Deluxe Memory Man was such a standout from other analog delays was because of it’s clearer repeats, which they achieved by *not* using all that heavy filtering that other analog delay manufacturers were. Thus the Memory Man has historically always been “noisy”. But similarly, back in those days people also lived just fine with 60 cycle hum from single coil pickups, tape hiss, vinyl crackle, tube amp hum, tape echo mechanical-noise, etc., because since you couldn’t really hear it much in the overall mix of music, no one cared. Now that everything is digital and clinically cleaned up, people have become sensitive to even a bit of a noise floor.

My Xvive Echoman doesn't make nearly as much noise, but it also doesn't sound 100% like a big box memory man. It's probably like 85-95% there, but I was already thinking about flipping it for one of these. I'm glad I stumbled upon your review. You saved me some buyers remorse and kept from replacing another solid pedal with something I "thought" would be better.

Great review and playing, Rusty! I used to own the big version of Memory Man Deluxe, the one with the knobs all at the top, but I traded in because that pedal was too big for my pedalboard. lol It was a great pedal. LIke you said, this pedal is not for everyone.

Thanks for the honest review. I was wondering about this I just sent back the dmm xo it was noisy and overdriving no matter if I had it in the loop or through the amp with no distortion.

Not sure about what chips are in this new unit but I build pedals as a hobby and depending on the brand of BBD chip is used the repros are noisy like that.

Thanks for the great and honest review Rusty! Certainly good points to know before buying one. Have you also tried using a battery with it? Lukas and I have such adapters for 9V batteries, which you plug in like the cable from your PS. I've also had a pedal once which was extremely noisy and one day I hooked it up to the battery adapter and the noise was heavily reduced. I was using a good isolated PS though, still the battery improved it a lot. Cheers, Martin

What I remember of the bigger MM is they have several internal trim pots and get fine tuning. Could be yours isn't dialed in or just has a bad component. I'd contact EHX and make another video if you get a new one.

It has fantastic “Mo-Jo”, it’s almost as if they need to finish the design. I hope they address this noise issue and the clock issue in the next issue of it. I’ve heard so many complain about problems with this pedal. It’s a pedal the guitar world needs for them to get right. Great video!

This is so odd, that type of noise is so characteristic of non isolated power supplies with a digital device in the chain. I looks like you hooked it up by itself, so it could be the chorus/vibrato LFO or the timing chip. Very odd, it´s ok to have some preamp noise on a BBD delay, but this doesn´t look to be behaving like preamp noise.

U2 ! Thickness in the repeats .. that’s cool .. you can get rid of the noise by using a noise gate .. that’s obvious isn’t it ... anyway great and interesting pedal ... 🙏👍

Look into the J Rockett - Clockwork Delay ( 2x's the price ) but an Upgraded Memory Man with Tap Tempo ( designed by Howard Davis ) who did the original Memory Man. For me . . . Noise is a Deal Breaker as I play spanky clean about 70% of the time. I use a Boss DD-500 ( which I love ).

Once I bought a DMM Xo, I had a Vox AC15C1. The hiss/clock noise was like being in front of the sea. Unbearable to make music. I returned it very disappointed.

I think most of the memory mans are noisy. It’s part of the analog charm, like 60 cycle hum, what’s not good is a squeal some of them get when the chips aren’t in sink. I had several old ones, only one sounded amazing, one got the squeal. The guy that created them is hard to get ahold of to fix it, and it’s costly. I think about getting a neeer one or nano but honestly don’t know if any will have the magic…?

I had the same problem but it wanished after I removed my booster pedal and reconnected all the pedals on my board 👍

There's certainly a lot of noise on the repeats there. Otherwise I really dig that tone you've got there with the Strat and the Carr. Fantastic stuff.
