My first college test ever was in a huge auditorium with the little desks that fold over your chair. They were barely big enough to fit your test on and everyone was really cramped up together. It definitely made me think of this.
Ahh. Classic Will. When his summer blockbuster powers were at their peak. Basically Will just needs to keep making action movies with aliens. Can't go wrong. He OWNS that genre.
C.I.A. Actually had similar tests in it's founding days, when they were looking to recruit new field agents. Some of the tests were meant to be a test of character, some exercises were dangerous, those who did them without question, were better at following orders and carrying out the mission no matter what, the others that refused to do the exersise, were not dropped out of the program, instead they were considered to be of a "tactical" mind set, and were trained to be operation planners, etc..
I am looking at this through two viewpoints. On the one hand, James Edwards (Will Smith) seemed the perfect candidate for the MIB: when he asked what the test was about, and the military boy gave a vague answer, James was the only one to actually still wonder what the test was about, making him understanding; when he pulled the table to help him, he was obviously resourceful;
@Aresolar690 i totally agree...everyone is trying to figure out how to finish the test and he's the only guy to grab the table..same with the second test. everyone is shooting the obvious targets and J is the only one who shoots the most dangerous target.......damn i love this movie.
@cb2198 Funny thing is, apparently in the novelization (or so I've heard, having never read it myself), the alien targets are taken from ugly but generally harmless species, and K and Z apparently say to each other that J did do the right thing in shooting little Tiffany. Nice to see official confirmation that we were all right in assuming that the main point of the test was to see if potential agents could think outside the box (useful when dealing with non-human sentient lifeforms).
I love how that in the first movie...Agent K was ordered to find jay to become an agent and in the second movie...Agent J was sent to find K to become an agent again! thats funny!
He should've got extra points for thinking outside the box. This was my favorite movie when I was little. Screw being a fairy princess, I dressed up in black, black sunglasses, ran around with a giant water gun & used the thermometer as that flasher thing......I was a very strange 6 year old girl.
When he shot the cardboard girl with the textbooks, and gave a really good explanation to his target, he proved to be analytical; standing up for himself proved he was self-respecting, but asking if he should apologize (albeit sarcastically), proved he was able to recognize flaws in judgment; finally, he raced after a sephalapoid, making him courageous. In short, a perfect candidate.
Marine Officers graduate from annapolis, or they can graduate from any college that offers NROTC. There are many routes to becoming an officer in any branch of service.
@Aresolar690 i watch this when i was kid all the time and i would think this is just a funny scene but now that im older this scene makes sense the way it went. i understand why jay was chosen because of his resourcefulness and deduction skills.
You guys are on to it. The test was designed to test how the candidates would react to aliens in the environment. J was the only one who stopped to think about what the aliens were doing rather than the fact they were just aliens. In the world of mib aliens come in all forms and appearances and J is the only one who appreciates this. Aliens in disguise are usually the ones with something to hide. Look at the two villians from the movies - the farmer cockroach and selena in the form of a model.
@Aresolar690 of courseee thats the whole point they're looking for people who think and they do this test in real life, my grandpa did something like this
A: It's Hollywood and it's not a war movie, so what do they know? B: He's a marine, he's supposed to be that hardcore. But they were cracking up a bit for when Will Smith was talking about how it was a good shot.
@ninjawhale03 i kinda like that aspect though, I'd rather have this movie remain overshadowed but still one of my favorites rather than overplayed and overused
There was one of each branch present, and the one who said west point class of whatever, the best of best etc etc. He was Army, learn your military uniforms. And hollywood should have enough common sense to know that people in the military are still people. Do you think when I put on my uniform i suddenly become some hardass, no Im still me.
On the other hand, all of these actions, while out-of-the-ordinary, may have been a real fuck-up on his part, and if it wasn't for K, James (Will) would have failed and then immediately neuralized.
