this man got 13 years in prison for a conspiracy and talking about a gun but Brock Turner did 3 months in jail for raping an unconscious woman behind a dumpster,.. America's law system is all kinds of fucked up
This video definitely challenges the stereotypes of inmates (edit: I am not talking about race. I am talking about the fact that inmates can be kind and loving)
plenty blacks got arrested fro crimes they didn't commit and I thing having weed on you which plenty black people smoke shouldn't put you in prison where plenty are sitting for as well and whites don't make 70% of the population the hispanics are like a big population which is going to dominate over the white population in a few years
^^^ that's because since there IS racism in america, many black people are born into bad situations and have to steal or sell drugs to survive meaning they get sentenced.
AandA, what are you on about? I said "inmates", I was referring to the stereotype that all inmates are cruel and cunning as perceived in media/movies/tv shows. I was just saying that it's refreshing to see the different point of view: These people are normal, loving people, their crime shouldn't define who they are.

Same issue with my brother. Lucky he get released two weeks before christmas! (It's been 6 years) I'm so excited, just gonna give him a big hug and hopefully set him on the right track towards a 'normal' life.

Hey, this is really random, but if you youtube "Cops and Ex-felons search for a middle ground" by Jubilee, He's one of the cons, so he's doing pretty good and they go into detail about what he did, very interesting he happened to be in both vids :)
This is by far the best buzzfeed video i've ever watched. Buzzfeed should be keeping up with these types of videos where people can actually learn something from the reality...

Man. It really hurts me to think that a man as nice as Ping got 3years for talking about a crime, and 10 years added for talking about a gun. BuzzFeed should definitely hire him after he gets out. He seems so sweet.
Yeah.. I think at max he should have gotten couple months so he would have realized what's it like in prison. I swear he would have never commited a crime if he was sent just for couple months to see prison..
This video made me cry, seeing how some of these men that they interviewed are so excited to go and do things again. Ping was the one that really pulled my heartstrings tho, he did nothing wrong and yet he was there for 13 years. 13 YEARS?! That's horrible, but despite that he is so hopeful and is looking forward to going out and doing things he would normally do again.
LaTripper I know people going through it, all of them I think need a reset button. A few hopping from jail to free back into jail. Its becoming their normal life, a prison with a program like this would allow them to see there is more to the world than the trouble they were getting into.
There is no reset button after prison. As an Ex Convict the government pretty much only cares about you when its time for them to harass you or limit your choices, and finding work or a way back into society is very hard, even if you became a new person on prison.

this really changes my viewpoint on inmates. I think with a lot of people, inmates are basically defined by their crime, but this video opened my eyes and made me think about how these people have stories. they all have dreams and aspirations. I've never really thought about that before...

prison shouldnt be punishment, it should be more like this, rehab, showing inmates that when they come out they are going to be better than when they came in
The original idea behind the prison system, as explained by rationalists like Jeremy Bentham, was for it to be a rehabilitation center for offenders...offenders get to see what it feels like to have their rights taken away and then they are provided with tools to help them reintegrate into society...so exactly like this.

alZiiHardstylez these prisoners seem to be in transition. Meaning they have less than 2 years of their sentences left or are up for parole. Step down procedures vary depending on the facility.
It depends on the prison and the prisoner, yes I have had experience with people who have been in prison and one who is in prison right now. Most are pretty chill, mainly because they don't want to get sent to solitary or have an LOP (loss of privilege) put against them. Some prisoners can be like those you see in the movies and T.V. shows, but they have a tendency of always being locked in the hole (solitary) or they get transferred to a different facility because the guards: A. don't want to deal with them anymore. B. they've done something to get a longer sentence. or C. The person overseeing their case, whether that be the judge or their case-worker, has decided a transfer is necessary because the people they are around are not conducive to their rehabilitation.
The one asian guy (Jin? I don't know how to spell his name) in the end made me cry. They're all so genuine and I've never seen this amount of support in a gym.
Ping's story absolutely floored me 13 years for conspiracy is absurd. I just wanted to hug him when he was talking about the dehumanization of convicts💔. I can't even fathom the mental fortitude it takes to stay positive in that environment. may they all do big and better things in the future. ✊
Huh..never thought prison could look this BRIGHT and FRIENDLY! Changes your perception of things. Makes you think doesn't' it? Kinda cried when Carl was talking about the things he wanted to do as soon as he got out. The simplest things we take for granted. Rocky's onto something about luck and circumstance and how anybody can easily be incarcerated. I hope for nothing but bright skies and smiling faces in each of these inmates futures!!!
Actually he already is out! IT was in 2016 i thought he was going to get out in four months too! lol XD So is frank and ping i beleive! I hope they are happy! :D
This is hands-down my favorite BuzzFeed video. Probably my favorite video in general, actually. I can't wait for these guys to get out and do all the things they've wanted to do for years.
Sam Thompson The guys in the video (who all committed petty crimes): say they can't wait to start businesses and contribute to society in a positive way after having years and years to think about themselves and the things they did when they were younger (which were due to poor circumstances they were put in by the capitalist society we're in and the school-to-prison pipeline). You have to think about it you're in a cell and everything you do is told to you not a choice. And prisoners have access food sales and name brand like Nike and Jordan for their clothes and shoes

I'm hoping to see ping again. Maybe do a series him leaving and how he does in society , his struggles successes his family if they want to participate. It would be great to see how ex inmates do when they're released.

Carl is still in prison. He won't leave until October 2018 ( 10 months to go!! ) But for Ping he is out and he is a Program Associate at Defy Ventures / Product Development and Marketing at POSS Fight Wear! that is what I found about him when I googled his name. There wasn't much but I found his LinkedIn account and that's what was written in his description! You can look it up yourself if you aren't sure : " Ping Lieu ".
This is really such a beautiful video. I clicked on it not really knowing what to expect. I really didn't think we'd get to hear from inmates and hear their stories. How they push each other and support each other and I just think that's amazing. It was so real
Incredible. So capturing, way deeper than I expected it to be. Honestly, it didn't feel like a 20-minute video. I applaud you Buzzfeed for this video. Very sad to watch but it gives you hope. You find yourself rooting for their dreams and changing the way you look at people that have been arrested or convicted of crimes.
honeytea But they’re the ones that commit the horrendous crimes... they wouldn’t be in there if the didn’t do something illegal. We, law abiding citizens, do not take things like our freedom for granted because we don’t break any laws and go to jail.

A lot of this just goes to show that (ex) cons shouldn't be judged for having been convincted. Most people in prison are there for drug related crimes, theft, etc. While yes those things they chose to do weren't great decisions, a lot of people do it because they need to make ends meet, are addicts, have deeper issues. There are some who go in with determination to change and some who don't. Those who do try to better themselves with rehab-type programs that prisons offer get out into the real world and end up struggling due to having been cons which makes it hard to find a job because there's a stigma that once you're a criminal you're always gonna be a criminal and it creates a disconnect and a cycle of crime. It's a sad reality that we don't see cons as humans who have feelings and care and make it harder for them to get better by perpetuating the cycle of crime. People change, people grow, everyone makes bad decisions.
All these people that are in that jail are genuinely good people and I respect that how much effort they put into being a better them....or person for themselves 😔✊🤚

These guys really make you think about your life. I am proud of them and I've never met them. I hope they're businesses succeed. Ping, Carl and Frank you guys rock and so do the others who have made the right decisions and are on the road to a better life. Keep strong you guys. Never give up.
