Mental Illness: Your Recovery

A short film detailing what I found useful in my recovery from schizoaffective disorder.
*Something I forgot to mention: in moments of despair, go and do the dishes! Fill up your sink with hot water and washing up liquid, then start washing your plates. I was told this tip in hospital and there's something very therapeutic about it (plus it gets the washing-up done!) See the soap suds as your thoughts/moods which you are washing all away.
Apologies for some of the quality (particularly the dodgy sound!); it was all recorded on my iphone.

Too much like for this video. Humanistic expression to a clinical diagnosis. This is what we need and want. A personal experience of a traumatic life identification.

Wow. I didn't realize it was so common of a feeling even waking up feeling like that, thinking "*@*#@, it's morning." I like the idea of planning something pleasant for each day. It's so easy to stay isolated. One year of my life I hardly left the house or interacted with anyone. I always have thought "oh, we shouldn't just distract ourselves from depression, we should face it.."... but maybe part of it is distracting ourselves, externalizing a while so we're not trapped 24/7 in emotions. This video is so helpful.... seriously. I needed your videos tonight. Thanks!

I think happiness is so hard to find in this world today. I'm growing and becoming stronger though and i think i'm on the road to becoming happier yes. It will take time though. I'm definitely in a much better place than i was a few years ago though. Much, much better. Thanks :)

..with whatever is going on. Instead of trying to get rid of unhelpful thoughts and feelings (which as i'm sure you know is so hard and can lead to a downward spiral) mindfulness encourages us to befriend ourselves and our mind. It's worth looking into. It might allow you some peace of mind. Also, write, draw, paint..be creative with your mental health. My poetry allowed me an outlet. Above all, be kind to yourself and try treat yourself like you would do a friend. Keep strong Jessica.

my advise is this to people who are suffering any sort of mental illness “I'm selfish, impatient and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I am out of control and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.” you will realise who actually care about you when your at your worst...the ones who can't support you let them leave...the ones that stay are the one's are special x

I'm sorry to read this. I wish i could offer some more words of support to you but know at least that you're not alone. I can relate to everything you've said. Don't give up hope..things won't always be like this. They may have been like it for a while but there's no reason why you can't come out of the darkness. I believe you have the strength to make it through. My thoughts and prayers are with you my friend.

Sorry to hear that Daniel. I know it's so tough to talk but you don't have to continue living in the hell you say you're living in. Please talk to someone about it...even if it's via email/phone and not to face to face to start with that is fine..the Samaritans are there to help your 24 hours a day. You will feel so much better as soon as you begin to talk. It's such a release. Don't keep on fighting alone like you have been, let someone help you. I know you can do it.

Why is illness an inappropriate word? -> Illness def- Disease, def -"A particular quality, habit, or disposition regarded as adversely affecting a person or group of people." I think that covers my experience of divergent mental health quite nicely.I am glad to be recovering from my illness.

Another brilliant video Jonny, you get the message out there very well. Your videos are very professional and you speak with great care and articulation. I can learn a thing or two from your videos. Thanks for sharing. The best thing about your channel, is that it is coming from someone who has been there and got through it, or has learnt to manage it better. That in itself is a great inspiration. All the best. D

There's always the samaritans..jo(at)samaritans(dot)org..you don't have to call when you're in distress and you don't feel like it..sometimes email is much easier. Nothing by the way is petty junk though..if you have thoughts or feelings that are distressing you..don't suffer it alone. Other things i'd recommend are meditation, yoga..something called mindfulness. There's a great audiobook called Mindfulness For Beginners which i'd recommend. Mindfulness is all about being in the present moment..

Jonny, I'm just about to finish my 2nd year in a mental health nursing degree. Ive seen your programme on the BBC and im shocked at how little help people get when they first start experiencing mental health problems and are at there most vulnerable and desperate for help. I would be interested in helping to campaign for this help and wondered if there is anything I could do to help you? Many Thanks Stuart Baird

I have something different. I suffer from Borderline Personality Disorder. The worst of it triggered off when my only relationship ended in 2005. I have been on all kinds of meds. Just recently been put on venlafaxine after being on Quetiapine for a few years. Something happened in November to trigger me off and I am finding it hard to pull myself together. Been getting many suicidal thoughts and been isolating myself. I tried to put myself in the May Tree in London but they didn't seem interested.

I have so much to say in response to this beautiful film. I commented on another of your videos a few days ago that touches on physical illness... How can I send you a personal message or email? You are touching and moving me in a powerful way at an important time, and I want you to know how and why so you and I can both continue to go from strength to strength, living to love and loving to live rather than being boxed in, confined and defined by stigma, labels and diagnoses. Please be in touch.

I don't know too much about depersonalization but i would suggest a form of talking therapy maybe to help you combat it. I found cognitive therapy useful. It's aim is to change your thinking. Perhaps group therapy may also be beneficial to you? Not sure where you live but look up mental health charities and organisations. They'll be able to point you in the right place. Keep strong.
