Carwow and AutoTopNL did both a 0-60 in 4.4 seconds with the M235i. So something is not right here.

@@sebbo231I have the car myself. I can hear the driver messed up with the launch control. What unfortunately happens often, and you have have to manually shift at 6000 rpm. The automatic gearbox will shift over 7000 rpm and the car wil lose to much speed. At 6000 rpm it's much much faster.

The Beemer is certainly not pretty, but when it’s side by side with the Merc, you begin to see how monstrous and horrid this thing is and how much more elegant the A35 is. The black colour barely hides its Shrek face.

Great review and good info I liked the testing method used dry/wet. I wouldn't mind seeing a similar test between the A35, m135i and the s3.

Terrible comparison. The M has run-flat all season tires and the AMG has performance tires. Why do you think the M stomped the AMG in the wet conditions? Comparing similar cars with very different tires tell you nothing about handling. But if you just don't care about apples to apples, yeah, great comparison.

You got that result because the AMG used performance tires and the M used all season run flats. That gives the AMG a HUGE handling advantage. Why do you think the BMW stomped the AMG in wet conditions? Tires mean EVERYTHING in road racing.

@@Somnospeed Good point Casey, but we test the tyre a manufacturer chooses for their vehicle and the product the buyer gets from the showroom.

@@Drivecomau Go to the BMW website and you will see there are FOUR different tire options you can choose from the showroom. You can pick whatever you want. A crucial point you intentionally left out. Is there a reason you NEVER mention the two completely different sets of tires in the comparison? Looks like you don';t give your audience enough credit to even know the day difference in the two sets of tires. Granted, most of the comments are from people who have no idea about tires or performance driving in general, but you led the audience to believe it was the BMW getting beat fair and square in an apples to apples comparison. There was nothing fair about that comparison and you hid that info.

@Mark Nicholls The thing is I just learned this through reading the full article on their website. Why can they not just show the different tire sets of both cars and explain the difference in grip levels and how it affects performance? It's not like tires are some minor unimportant detail in this sort of comparison. At least talk about it you know?

Fully agree. The questionable / "random" tyre choices of BMW are an issue, also affecting the test results. Mine 218i grand coupe is equipped with Good Year Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3, which even though they are not the latest Asymmetric tyre (I think they are now in 5), they definitely are considered as performance tyres. A friend of mine, with the same car, has Bridgestone Turanza, a definitely non-performance tyre. I was surprised when I realised that they do the same also with 235i / 135i! I fully agree that the job of the various journalists is to evaluate the cars as they are, but in order to approach this by the technical point of view, we read more about the performance of the Turanza than the actual car. It is a stupid choice by BMW. Maybe for this reason we see so different verdicts about the car. For sure the tyres fitted per case play an important role, and maybe for this reason the specific 235i was better in the wet than in dry (which is totally uncommon for a performance car).

@@nickkyriakidis4350 Performance tires are a no-cost option on this M model. I just bought one and could have picked either tire. I went with all season because it snows 4 months per year where I live.

Tires do make a difference but let’s look at the merc tires as someone said they are better. Another option depend on market, is Michelin PS4s’s which do grip better than the Pzeros. So in hindsight, we can say the tire used aren’t the best for either maybe?

In the UK the Mercedes cost per spec is far better. BMW insist on giving drivers poor seat trims and even worse speaker systems as standard. Mercedes is a beauty.

If you really had al these in comfort mode then that will explain the delay at the start. Knock the M235 into sport and there is no delay.

@@jamestorrens645 you actually have no idea. The '35 amg' and the 'm40i's' have piss all to do with the AMG and M division. It's clear dilution of the brand to make someone feel better about their purchase. There's a reason both brands offer packages to slap on some AMG and M badges on throughout any base model A class, C class, 3 series etc. Ie: to make people feel good about their purchase
