those are some good looking wheels. a w123 looks great with the BBS type wheels. I took my whole subframe off. Its easier than you might think. A rolling jack underneath the diff. DC the sway bar, brake lines, rubber driveshaft coupling, shocks. Then the two bolts on the subframe mount and the whole thing just drops away. Makes it easy to rebuild the whole thing. THX for your vids. A ppreciate them

Good job Vito's Garage, I have 2 w123 240d's and I purposely skipped doing the rear wheel bearings because of what a bear it seemed like it would be, but you did a great job on it. Perhaps I will tackle them someday. I appreciate your videos.

All I need to do is adjust my rear bearing on my 83 240D so do I have to use that big ass socket from inside near the controlling arm to adjust bearing tension? or is it a smaller nut from the brake disc hub side? I haven't pulled my disc off yet.
@VITOSGARAGE
@VITOSGARAGE 5 лет назад
You need that special socket and use it from the inside to adjust the bearing. In the mean time you need to hold the hub from spinning using the breaker bar and a couple of lug bolts

You cannot reuse the crush collar. And yes you need to use a dial indicator or a special torque wrench to measure the drag on the bearings. If it aint broke don't fix it; because now it's broke

Vito, how did you bang out or pull out the inner bearings? Did you hit the inner bearing by placing something on it and then hitting the bearing from the opposite side?
@VITOSGARAGE
@VITOSGARAGE 4 года назад
Can you rephrase your question? The inner bearing just comes out after you remove the castle nut. The outer bearing stays on the hub
@gbenz6494
@gbenz6494 4 года назад
I think there is something still preventing the inner bearing from coming off. I can see some type of ring or washer. The Flange is out already so I'm not too sure whats preventing the inner bearing from popping out. All I know is that if you look at the inner bearing from the opposite side, the side where you would be looking at your wheels when they are on, you can see the inner bearing and it appears that you would just be able to bang it out using a similar size pipe diameter and banging that pipe with a dead blow hammer. I tried that and it did not budge. It's almost like I need to remove something else on the side that it should pop out from. It looks like there is something there but I'm not too sure how to remove it. On your video you kind of skip over that part but I think you did mention that there is some sort of ring piece that needs to be removed so that the inner bearing can be removed.
@gbenz6494
@gbenz6494 4 года назад
I believe you mention that you have to remove this inner seal and only then can you remove the inner bearing: You mention this here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Kn86idBtajA.html

After cleaning up the area it looks like its a seal. I think I need a seal puller.
@VITOSGARAGE
@VITOSGARAGE 4 года назад

My w116 didn't come with outer seal in the kit and didn't have one when removing. Only the seal on inside of hub facing driveshaft, is this normal? Bearings lasted me about 4 years before completely blowing out.
@VITOSGARAGE
@VITOSGARAGE 4 года назад
That's strange, the kit usually comes with everything. Wait, so when you did your bearings, you only replaced the inner seal and you reused the bigger outer seal?
@julianwilson7039
@julianwilson7039 4 года назад
I haven't pit the new one in but when it came out it only had a seal on the inside facing the driveshaft, none on the big side at all. And some weird part came with the kit that doesn't appear to be part of my set up, but it came from pelican parts, they've always got my parts right, and everything seems to fit nice
@julianwilson7039
@julianwilson7039 4 года назад
Thank you for this video btw all of your videos helped me a ton
@julianwilson7039
@julianwilson7039 4 года назад
Also I just pulled out some spacers that seem to be made of springs? The outer one was busted with the big bearing but the small one stayed intact with bearing
@VITOSGARAGE
@VITOSGARAGE 4 года назад
@@julianwilson7039 No problem. So, it seems like you have to redo the whole procedure. Fcp euro has a kit too. But you can also contact pelican parts and ask them to exchange the parts because they went bad.. This time, change both seals, grease up the bearings very well and install back. This video is old and not the best quality. I post new car videos every week. Please check out my playlists also😊🙌🚗🔨🔧

Hello Vito, just reaching out to you and your subscribers for a little help. I own a 1979 w116 300sd and need the LEFT REAR HUB (part#1263501546). The hub is shot. Apparently, the Left and Right hubs are not interchangeable. I am going to list both the left and right rear hub part numbers for reference purposes only. 126 350 15 46 LEFT rear 126 350 16 46 RIGHT rear Again, I need the LEFT rear hub only. Been having a tough time finding a good used one. I Enjoy all of your videos so keep them coming.

Hi sir. Thank you so much for watching and supporting! I have lots of videos about old school Benzes! The best cars ever made! Ipost new clips every week. I love W116s, I might be actually getting one next year from a friend. It needs an engine swapped, I wanna save it so much. As far as the rear wheel hubs, they should be the same on Left and Right sides. They're interchangeable. The only thing is that this is a W116 chassis, not the W126. The part numbers you gave me are for the W126 Benz. I don't think that W126 hubs would fit on the W116. I am honestly not too sure. W126 Benz is a lot beefier than a W123 or W116. Let me search the right part for you. And, what is the reason you need to change your rear wheel hub?
@VITOSGARAGE
@VITOSGARAGE 4 года назад
Here's the whole used rear trailing arm. This is the rear passenger side. If you need the driver's side, search it up on ebay. It's there. It's straight from Germany www.ebay.com/itm/Mercedes-Benz-W116-Steering-Knuckle-Wheel-Hub-Rear-Right-4/193113050262?hash=item2cf66f4c96:g:B7EAAOSwezVWxvlO

It's hard to find just the hub alone for this baby. Try to look on Genuine Mercedes Parts websites. Or you might have to order straight from the local dealership
@gbenz6494
@gbenz6494 4 года назад
@@VITOSGARAGE Although the part numbers start with w126, they are applicable and fit both the w116 and the w126. The hubs themselves may look alike but the FSM clearly distinguishes between the LEFT and RIGHT REAR HUBS and states not to interchange them.
@VITOSGARAGE
@VITOSGARAGE 4 года назад
@@gbenz6494 I see. You may be right. W123 both rear hubs are the same. Can't tell much about W126 or W116. You can order the hub and see if it fits. If it doesn't, then return it and get another one

JHZR2 Dial indicator? I hope you are not serious
@JHZR2
@JHZR2 6 лет назад
VITO'S GARAGE no it's an honest question. The FSM requires it for the front and I believe the rear. The rear has a crush washer that if overcrushed is not correct. At least per my reading. This may be overkill but it's a job I've never done that I'd like to do and be right. So it's a serious question, respectfully submitted.
@VITOSGARAGE
@VITOSGARAGE 6 лет назад
JHZR2 I didn't use dial indicator on both rear and front bearings. I know how much to tighten them. I never have any issues. But if you've never done bearings then you should use the dial indicator
