As a new MB owner, must say LONG LIVE MERCMAN! This is only video on YT where every aspect of problem is presented and addressed, even people without mechanical knowledge can understand! Much respect, tip of the hat!
These damaged camcrafts are a well known problem mostly of Taxi driver who let their OM654 run at idle rpm for several hours every day when they are waiting for guests. I think the oil pressure is a little bit to low for this bad working condition, but Mercedes choose the cheaper solution. OM654 after production date 6/2018 or after 6/2020 (I don't remember the exact date.) use in the rocket instead of the old "Nadellager" a upgraded version, a new "Gleitlager". This OM654 is build in nearly every, version of passanger car AND truck like "Vito" or "Sprinter". With some care and the right maintainance it's no problem to reach more than 500.000 km. Oil change every 25.000 Km is too long. It's better to change every 15.000 Km. The remaining weakness is the timing chain and the "Steuerkettenspanner". With bad maintainance an expensive replacenent after only 150.000 Km is possible.
Mercedes should own up to the crap rockers they have put in this engine. Hearing of so many failures, I'm amazed they are getting away with not paying to fix this issue via a recall.
Hi. Very impressed of job that you have done with merc engines. Any chance that I can have appointment with you to check my car's engine please? Thanks
did you know if in the new version om654m they still have this problem? very upset i tought about to get my first mercedes c o glc because they last a lot but unfortunatelly is not more like this!
Really great video, I've seen hydraulic lifters fail on om651 but never on om654. How did you torque the sprocket screws, not much space in the back due to egr cooler.
You can torque those off the vehicle on the bench. Just use the locking bar to keep the position. Once you have those torqued down, it's just a matter of moving the entire assembly over to the vehicle.
@@LynxStarAuto arent the cams hard to fit into the sprocket when you tighten the bolt before putting it back in? I thought that thats the whole point of losening these bolts
Great video: What do you think - has start/stop system or long oil change period something to do with this damage and is this fix coming inexorably to all OM654 engines sooner or later?
Iv had a 2019 at 60k miles who only services at mercedes main dealer and even on that engine he had this problem, so i think its purely just bad design…
When this plopping intake sound is present is it always the rockers or can it be problem with egr or something else? I have the plopping sound and only error code is P0101FA MAF faulty values that triggers constantly. When running throttle valve test in Xentry the engine become completely silent for a short time.
I'm wondering if the " Failing Rocker Bearings and Hydraulic Tappets" issues can be resolved with new parts? As in did MB resolve the issue but improving the parts or is there aftermarket parts that prevent the issue from ever happening again? Is there a specific thing that can be done to make these parts last forever?
Ola tudo bem,sou do brasil e sigo voces aqui pelo youtube, estou fazendo uma manutencao em um veiculo sprinter 907 com motor om 654 se tiver o manual de reparacao desse motor para poder compartilhar comigo ficarei muito grato
For this problem not to come back you have to cancel all emissions system out DPF , EGR, and adblue. Because of emissions system is blocked this problem appears on all euro6 diesel cars. On that car definitely air inlet and outlet system is blocked and valves are clogged full with carbon.
Hi thanks for this video I have the same problem with same engine I'm a taxi driver so I'm wondering how long I can drive the car without further damage, Mercedes say I've detected the issue early.cheers
I am interested to know what is the cause of this as it always seems to be on the exhaust side... Nowhere can i find a diagnosis, or is it just poor quality rockers.... But the camshaft did look very dirty on the exhaust side.
Is the engine running on all 4 cylinders at this moment, without an error message in the speedometer? Is the noise where you can tell ahead of time that the rocker arms need to be replaced before it's too late?
Engine is running on all 4 cylinders as there is no misfire, the blowing noise is due to the valves opening or closing a bit late or earlier than it should causing some sort of back fire in the intake system
Forgive me I am very stupid and not very knowlegdable about engines, but why does this DOHC engine need rocker arms in the first place? Cant the cam lobes just press directly on the tappets?
Evet malasef cok kotu bir design biz cok yaptik yaptigimiz en dusuk kilometre 100 bin kilometredeki 2019 bir e class, servicei falan da zamaninda yapilan bir arac..
No just soak the tappets in oil before fitting them in, the locking tool just helps overall, i probably can do it without the tool, the main benefit of the locking tool is it lets you tighten the gearing bolts without the camshafts moving..
@@mercmantips just got a 2017 with 27,000miles on sounds loud to me compared to my bmw f10 and when you in the car you can here a slight rumble/rattle from engine nearest to the cab would it be possible to send you a video for your professional opinion?
After being told for the past 3 months by multiple mechanics that I need a total engine replacement and that my engine is completely damaged (diagnosis purely given on sound alone) I’ve randomly come across this video!! Completely shocked as the sound this engine is making is EXACTLY the sound coming from mine! Mercman do you have a contact number/email or website I can get in touch with you on?
@@mustafabuyukbalci6151Yes, you can change the chain by pulling a new one in, but the oil pump has a second chain which has to be replaced too! It's way down low in the engine, no way to change that one with the engine mounted
These E class can go up To 300k some without any problems, there is no reliability issues, don’t damp people’s abuse on Mercedes pls , I have seen people abuse these cars!!
- Hi. - Is this knocking phenomenon typical of the Mercedes W272 engine? - Waiting for an answer. - Thanks. - הי. - האם תופעה זו של נקישות' אופיינית למנוע מרצדס W272 ? - ממתין למענה. - תודה.
No manufacturer can make anything decent anymore, its all gone to shit engines with design issues from day 0 manufacured to survice maybe 200.000 miles if you are lucky and wear out atleast 2 timing chains getting there. Take the OM611 and nearly identical OM646 for example. Those were dead simple durable engines. Double roller timing chain that will outlast the rest of the vehicle and no other significant mechanical issues. They last a long time and since I am thinking about buying a cheap used Van Ive already settled on a Mercedes Vito instead of a VW because they came with those exact engines in them and the older Mercedes Automatics are also very long lasting aswell so a W 639 Vito with the OM646 and Automatic Transmission would be a dream. When you look you see older Diesels with tons of miles on the engine like 200.000 300.000 and more. Do you think any of these new junk engines coming out will survive that? I have a near 20 year old Volvo V70 with the five cylinder D5244T Diesel. 95% of the parts under the hood are original and the engine has done 250.000km. Never needed anything changed. Runs like new. Virtually no wear. Only ever needed oil, filters, belts, pulleys/tensioners and a waterpump. Makes 160hp, plenty of torque and fuel efficiency is good. I will do an EGR + Intake cleanout this year in addition to my regular maintenance and probably fit an EGR blockoff plate since it helps them from sooting up the intake manifold and improves fuel mileage slightly. Before I aqqired the car service records indicated it had 0w30 at 30.000 kilometer intervals. So the absolute worst you can throw at an older Diesel engine. Volvo is delusional and stupid enough to have 0w30 at 30.000km as their factory interval on their cars. The engine vibrated a lot and the valvetrain was noisy as hell. I put in 5w40 diesel oil and change that every 12 months or 10.000km. The engine survived the previous abuse flawlessly and runs so smooth and quiet now on 5w40 its hard to believe. No manufacurer these days builds engines like that!
