I finally tackle that oil leak that has been coating my driveway and the undercarriage for a long time.
The car is a 2008 Mercedes GL320 CDI with the 3.0Liter V6 turbo Diesel.
In Part 1 ( • Mercedes Diesel GL320C... ) I talked about how I was doing the project. But here in Part 2 we are going to show you as much as we can of the process to replace the OM642 oil cooler seals. The seals were the original orange color and we replaced them with the recommended purple ones. This is a quiet running powerful diesel engine, but it has been leaking and had a few issues over the last year or so and I hope this is the last time I have to work on it for a while.
I spend a lot of time out in the workshop and i am always fixing, scapring and recycling things to try to make this world a better place and keep the 'Do it yourself" spirit alive.
I am a computer Network Engineer by profession but my parents and grand parents are Plumbers, engineers, and Teachers so I hope to pass the same Can_Do onto my kids, and maybe some people on youtube.

thank you sir! Your video is probably the most informative (still would be great to see one with ALL of the steps and particulars such as the torque specs and such) but thank you for uploading this. I have torrented mercedes WIS service software hoping all the torque specs and such will be present in there. Over 50gb download.

It was such a large job and I got derailed when I had to battle with broken bolts so the video was not what I wanted it to be. But I noticed a small drop of oil under my dads ML320cdi the other day. So If I have to do the seals in that one I’ll make another video with more informative and step by step guides. Thanks for watching!

@@MalarkeyTaylor that would seriously be awesome dude. Lot of people have uploaded this repair video to RU-vid but not a single one gets into details like torque specs and tips and a lot of them skip over steps. It’s not like the service techs can do anything to us anyways, we’re immune so they can all go take a hike with their $3000 quotes for this job. What was the time needed to get down to the oil cooler and re-seal? Seems like you got that done rather quickly.

Good job on the video. Do you have a list of all the parts you purchased to do this job?
@MalarkeyTaylor
@MalarkeyTaylor Год назад
I don’t really. But the bulk of it is in the kit from idparts. www.idparts.com/oil-cooler-seal-kit-w166x166w221-6421880480-p-10206.html I think outside of that kit I needed coolant and antiseize…

Great job buddy, what's the torque for most of the stuff I saw you checked like a pic of sheet
@MalarkeyTaylor
@MalarkeyTaylor 2 года назад
Thanks! I used a cheat sheet from IDParts.com and from alldatadiy.com to get the torque specs for stuff. They all seemed to be just a little bud different. If you find me on Instagram, msg me and I can send pictures of the sheets, but they are pretty easy to find online if you know what part you’re working on.

Great job man, do you have any of the torque specs for this job?
@MalarkeyTaylor
@MalarkeyTaylor 2 года назад
they are buried in a stack of Printouts from the dealer system. And I figure anyone that is going to attempt this job should be able to locate them. It’s not for the typical shade tree mechanic. Plus the seal kit came with a note card that had some of them on it from idparts.com

Great job, Dit you put new oil cooler or used the old cooler cleaned up ?
@MalarkeyTaylor
@MalarkeyTaylor 2 года назад
Thanks, I re-used the old oil cooler. There were no signs of warping or restriction in the passages. The fault was clearly in the pcv system and the seals. I’m confident with proper torque settings it will serve well for a long time. So far we’ve put over 10,000miles on since the seal job and the only leaks have come from a faulty wif sensor and power steering cooler line.

@@MalarkeyTaylor good to hear that, i’m couple day busy with this job but i think my car is the worst to work with , caring this engine , Viano V6 2012 Car has very small nose to work on this engine without having a nightmare Thanks for sharing videos

@@SirvacYerqer my only experience is this GL and I can only imagine any less room in the engine bay could make it Nearly impossible to do the job. Hopefully you don’t break any bolts on the exhaust like I did. The broken manifold bolts doubled the amount of time the job took for me. Good luck with your project!

Hi mate, what’s the time to do this job
@MalarkeyTaylor
@MalarkeyTaylor Год назад
I think It took me a little over three (12+ hour) days, which included the exhaust manifold replacement and the broken bolt extraction. And it was my first time doing it. I think if I was to tackle it again I could get it done in 20-25 hours of labor. Maybe less if everything went smoothly.

whats the cost of getting this job done? i am assuming m having the same problems.
@MalarkeyTaylor
@MalarkeyTaylor Год назад
I had a couple quotes to do it ranging from $2000 to $4500 (usd) but had a hard time getting any indie shops to commit confirm they knew what needed to be done. I think the dealer quote was several thousand too, but I forget the exact number.

@@nandtripathi7983 sorry to hear that. I’m sure it’s worth fixing. Maybe look for a sprinter repair place? The repairs are often similar and maybe they have someone that can get the job done for you in your budget? It would be a shame to send one of these up the river just for the failed seals.

I don’t remember exactly how much it cost. But I had quotes from dealer and local Indy work shop for between $3,000 and $8,000
