To say he mopped the floor with my soul would be an understatement. I had seen him play before and he was great, but I didn't expect the endless barrage of 90mph forehand winners pinpoint in the corner. Excellent display here by Ryan and all the best at Virginia Tech next year!
Final Score: 6-0 6-1

few things: 1. that court/club was beautiful, such a peaceful place to play; 2. too many short shots falling in midcourt for him to attack, but I get that's easier said than done when you're on the defensive right away; 3. can you start getting the racket, string pattern, tension, and strings for each opponent? For us tennis nerds it's always cool hearing others set ups.

I've been watching this video at least once every single day since it came out. Black shirt's forehand is freaking insane! I'm learning a lot just by watching him swing the racquet. Not that your forehand is bad or anything. In fact, I've been imitating your forehand since last year because it feels so nice and consistent when rallying with someone, but when it comes to someone who can hit winners frequently, I get destroyed. Now that I've been playing for a quite a while now, I feel that I'm ready to start accelerating the speed of my forehand and also flick my wrist similar to Black shirt. Anyways, I hope that you continue to improve on your game so that we can see more interesting matches like this one! Good luck!

After watching this a second time over, this makes me realize that different styles of play work better on different people. While me or most of everyone here cannot beat Andrew and his amazing athleticism and defense, some of us can hit a harder shot with pace or just a super flat shot. This guy has shown that he can tee off on any floater or ball slow enough if he's given enough time. If he played someone that was less athletic than Andrew, but played someone who could hit faster pace shots, he might not have had the opportunity to hit that many devastating forehands and you'd start seeing errors. But who really knows. For all we know that guy can prolly tee off on anything you give him.

@@rolandharris2706 yes, we can all see that. I was stating that possibly if Andrew had given him faster ground strokes to deal with, he might not have had the chance to swing his forehand as hard as he could. He seemed to hit that hard without being on the run. But also if Andrew varied his shots. Andrew's shots are all with top spin with moderate speed. If Andrew hit a faster or flatter shot, it could've been something his opponent does not like and possibly stop those forehands from coming. Or shots with more variation and diff speeds and spins. Do I have to repeat this also to let it sink in? 8)

So true, Ryan could have harder time against a flat ball basher or slice/dicer. Andrew is a very good fighter in %95 of his matches but terrible match for the young guns attacking on the rise style. I am also an all attack player but there are some guys that can hit a very low slice punch on both sides which does not bounce high but still penetrating enough to push me back. Really hard to get past through them. Would love to watch Ryan dismantle that style.

There's a kid his age in the US that would beat him 1 and 1... and then THAT kid will be beat by a top 5 18 year old 1 and 1... and then THAT kid might be beat 1 and 1 by the ITF's top ranked junior... and then THAT kid might get beat 1 and 1 by a kid the same age that doesn't even play ITF junior events but turned pro already, like Jannick Sinner...

Andrew, good video but watch it again yourself and see what Ryan does: 1. Recovers to left of centre to favour his forehand (per comment below : why Ryan hits so few backhands). 2. Try and play closer to the baseline. (aka when you are serving you are naturally more in the court). 3. Walk in and split step as he serves. Currently you stand flat footed. There is nothing wrong with your shots / speed / stamina / control etc. Just where you position/ play. A coach said to me once ' Remember a game of tennis is really a game of forcings back - you want to push the other player back behind the baseline so you can control the point and come to the net for a volley.' I only say this because we all want your soul to be revived! :-)

@@kylem212 definitely agree with that.. plus when your playing on the defensive against someone that's got a quick setup for a full powered forehand that they can nail lines with regularly it kinda makes pushing forward and forcing the opponent back easier said than done.. I'll definitely agree on the flat footed though... being Flat Footed immediately puts a person on defense because it adds time to setting up any shot..

It's generally the right idea. I just don't think there is enough threat behind Andrew's shots to seriously put him in trouble. If Ryan doesn't already answer the first try wide to the forehand with pressure that Andrew can't recover from the shot to the backhand often will still not be enough even Ryans backhands is maybe 50 percent the weapon compared his forehand.

Thanks for the video. Ryan has an outstanding forehand and knows how to move around his backhand well. I've watched some of your other videos and respect your game (especially some of your more recent doubles videos). Your form isn't very pretty, but you move very well and you seem to miss very little and are accurate with all your shots. You have deceptively good power with margin on your forehand. You also compete really well. Ryan has a very nice game. Yes, his backhand doesn't appear nearly as strong as his forehand, but he was crushing inside out forehands from the backhand alley and really controlling the court. It can be difficult to make someone hit a backhand when they are able to hurt you from anywhere on the court with their big weapon. Again, thanks for the video.

Ryan, the guy in black?, is really just attacking your short balls. Several of his backhands he is just chipping and slicing, waiting for you to to hit a short ball or weaker ball to his forehand. Your best strategy here is to move him with shorter angles out to his backhand, throw junk at him so he can't rip forehands, and wait for your opportunity to attack. Nonetheless, super high quality video footage, fun to watch, and super nice that you got to record it and let us comment/feedback. You got him next time!

It's interesting to watch a 5.0 match after watching a 4.5 match. The difference is the fire in the pace of the balls. Helpfully it's s not THAT hard to learn how to have a massive forehand. The Ryan kid definitely has a good forehand and the backhand looked technically efficient too. The video tape was spliced, we didn't see the whole match so there might have been more shots aimed in that direction. A lot of the 5.0 players do not look like they are doing much until you get out there with them. The average neighborhood player will come up very short. I played a 5.0 player who was a former dude friend of my daughter when I went out to see her in the Midwest around the mid 2000s. I was around a high 3.5 low 4.0 and in my early fifties. He was 29. I had him three- love before he could blink. He snapped out of his induced stupor and with the local juco team he was supposed to play for watching out of the corner of their eyes, he proceeded to decapitate me 3-6, 0-6. I keep hearing people say the Ryan kid is a clay Court specialist and the Andrew guy on a hard court surface would destroy Ryan. Whoever said that may want to rethink it because if he's pounding forehands like that on clay, those same balls will be getting smoked even harder on a hard court. Speaking about the crap they call clay, it is not clay at all but ground up Stone and Brick which is basically gravel. This is exactly what it look and sound like and it is very irritating. This is what they mostly use in both of the tennis centers in my town here in northern Alabama. A lot of my old school friends play on it claiming this surface is prolonging their career(s). This old schooler don't play dat (masters lever age) and I will live and die on real asphalt AKA, hard court.

Ryan is not only very strong, he uses everything to generate power in his fh. What strikes me most is that he uses his hips a lot more than most, and he uses rotational as well as forward motion. His arm is stiff and his wrist doesn't move throughout the shot, giving him consistency. He whips the racquet head into the ball, striking instead of simply swinging through. His bh seems to me to be more about keeping the ball in play rather than going for winners, but he can obviously hit the ball with heavy topspin or pace if he wants to. Fed has a gorgeous bh, of course, but it depends a lot on perfect timing. Wawrinka has great timing, too, but he uses his body more than Fed and generates more speed. I compare Fed to a swordsman who can generate power and speed with form and Stan to a man with a club, using his entire body as a unit to blast the club into a hanging piece of meat. Ryan's bh reminds me more of Wawrinka than Fed.

Love the kids style of tennis. Aggressive attack is what its all about. He is probably gonna want to improve that backhand considerably though but good luck to him on the next level. :)

Hey guys! Quick question: Is this surface similar to red dirt? I don´t know if I get that sensation from the videos and its not that serius; But it seems to be very slippery and slide all over the place. Im from Argentina and here we play mostly in red dirt. Is it similar??

Hi Andrew. Quick technical question: When recording with your Sony Camcorder (which is a lot heavier than a GoPro), what do you use to clamp it to the back fence? Thanks.

Man that guy was a monster. You did great to hang in there with him!!! WPWP. Your definately fast, but you'll have to go for more risk against someone like that. Even if you hit it out going for big shots, its worth it, b/c he will take the point anyway and grind you otherwise.

Hey Andrew, When did you stop sliding you're right foot forward into the pinpoint position on your serve? I remember you doing that when you were working on it in 2017 but this is the first time I have noticed you stopped.

I'm not a tennis expert by any stretch, but my advice when playing juggernauts like this guy, would be to take the Dustin Brown approach. When he played Rafa at Wimbelodon, he went for winners and that's it. He REFUSED to get into baseline rallies with Rafa, because he knew he would get his ass kicked. If you're having a good day and going for constant winners works, then you have a real chance to beat someone better than you. If not...well then you were going to get your ass kicked anyway.
@WXHPOYA
@WXHPOYA 5 лет назад
True but Rafa sucked ass that time and had extremely low confidence after he was abused at RG. So basically you need him to suck and have low confidence at the same time to stand a chance - which doesn't happen too often with a good player.

Austin Manning both times Dustin best Rafa Rafa was out of form and on his worst surface by far. Combination of having a horrible day and playing out of his ass, but it worked out for Dustin.

I think you need to start using the wrist on your groundstrokes(especially on forehand and serve). It looks like you have to much tense there and you lose access to spin and lots of power. Also I think you're focusing to much on the spin, start putting more weight on your shots. At your level you need to be both offensive and defensive, you can't build your game only on defense(also not only on offense). Hope my opinion will help you improve your game. (sorry if I was to petty or something...)

I appreciate that Andrew wore his best tank top for this match. Add in the B-ball cap worn backwards, scruffy beard and black socks, he seems ready for a Hill Billy hoe-down! Update: So, wearing high, black socks are a thing now? Wow! New tends are not always a good thing. Wearing blacks socks with shorts used to be the domain of blue collar guys and old men.

If the attacker hits deep to the corner, can the defender return the ball, and reposition at the center of the service boxes; would that be a strategy for an injured defender?

Easier said than done. That dude's forehand is lethal, he's in control of almost every point. Even if he manages to hit it to his backhand, the guy would've ran around it and crush it. Andrews game(heavy, topspin) cater's to that guy's game, he likes high balls. It's almost like he's feeding him perfect forehand drills. The match up is bad, especially on clay. Also, andrew seems like he hasnt been playing in a while. Put the GAMES down on the court ;) if you catch my drift.

Ryan certainly has a big forehand, but wondering if his tendency to camp out on the backhand side of the court will be a vulnerability if he plays more experienced D1 level players. Stronger players might be able to exploit that opening on the forehand side of the court. But, having gone to Virginia Tech myself, I’m glad we have him on board.
