This is a video of the Merry Go Round Museum in downtown Sandusky. The carousel itself was built in 1939 by Allan Herschell in the County Fair style. The County Fair style means it's a portable carousel so it needs to be simplistic in design so it's easily broken down and transported from site to site. Unfortunately, this carousel was foundin 1992 with all the animals missing. So the museum repopulated it with animals it bought or carved in their own shop onsite. The menagerie (horses plus other animals) include 25 jumping horses, 2 dragons, 1 mule, 1 pig, 1 ostrich, and 2 chariots. The animals are arranged in three rows and are all jumpers. The scenery panels were all painted with scenes from the surrounding area such as the Put In Bay tower, Merry Go Round Museum, Edison's Birthplace, and the fountain in downtown Sandusky with a statue of a boy holding up a old boot. There also are working WurliTzer 153 and 105 band organs.
The museum features animals they own with other animals that are on loan from private collectors. This years display is "Gone Wild" so they have among others, a PTC Camel, a Dentzel Lion (stripped of it's paint), a elephant and gator from a French childrens carousel, a PTC Giraffe and Dentzel Giraffe, as well as one of the four Buffalo that were ever carved.
I've already explained what the County Fair style is, now here are the other two. The Coney Island style is very fancifull and almost cartoonish and usually decorated with fake jewels. The Philadelphia style is more life like. The carousels and animals that are from PTC (Philadelphia Tobboggan Co) best fit this style.
Thanks go to the National Carousel Association for the information on the Allan Herschell Carousel.

Interesting to see the animals here, as they're quite different from the animals you get on a British Gallopers roundabout. Our horses are shorter and stumpier, with different shaped legs; holding their legs in the position that people thought real horses did when they galloped (front ones out in front, rear legs sticking out behind). Also on our roundabouts were a few cockerels and a few peacocks, but not often other animals.

Finally got to the museum last weekend. Went for the COAA convention, but stayed for the carrousel museum. It's great to get on a carrousel running the correct speed. As of June 2015, the 105 is in good tune. Didn't hear the 153 play. We will definitely go back there again.

Glad you had fun and it's nice to see the organ is still working perfectly. They should be able to play the 153 upon request which is what I did during the museum tour.

1:16 and it did. The carousel at the museum was built by Herschell but the horses are missing at the time of it’s purchase.

Thanks for the informative Video in the museum & the carousel ride, I was just asking which horse is haunted?
@woodencoasterfan
@woodencoasterfan 13 лет назад
@zac613 As I understand, the older carousels did go about 8-10 mph. That's why most of them have the horses that are banked inward towards the center of the ride much like what you see in my Midway Carousel at Cedar Point video.

As I see in the footage, the 1939 carousel design tends to go quite fast, and so the seats are banked inward towards the center of the ride so that the riders don't really feel too much g-force and the amount of g-force you are experiencing really changes the level of oxygen the brain is receiving. If the ride has it's seats to the outer side, much like the modern day carousels, the riders will experience more centrifugal force and centripetal acceleration, and so it will lead to higher g-forces. But fortunately, modern day carousels go slower than those carousels that were made in the early days of the ride and in the early to mid-1900's, probably around 5 mph, and the size of the rides is much larger than those in the time that I have mentioned above, thus allowing more riders to get in the carousel.

Hi i'm just asking is the haunted carousel horse at the museum?
@woodencoasterfan
@woodencoasterfan Год назад
That is a good question. I had no idea there was a haunted carousel horse. It could be there now as they change exhibits frequently and this video was shot a number of years ago as well.

@whoisthisguy724 the one in the middle of the carousel isn't too bad but the one in the lobby is badly out of tune and screaming for a complete refurb.

Are there any other carousel museums with full size, working carousels that you can ride much like this one?

I believe the Allen Herschel museum in Tonawanda, NY has one. It is just north of Buffalo and is in the original Allen Herschel factory.
