The first Monday in May: the MET gala takes place every year at the museum, in New York. It is arguably one of the most important red carpet events of the year in terms of fashion. There is always a theme according to which the guests are expected to dress (this time: "Camp, notes on fashion") & many attendees wear garments specially made for the occasion. I find it very inspiring, creative and impressive. Hence a little video review of the best dressed, which I hope you will enjoy!
Thumbs up if you liked this video :-)

It's hard to work up enthusiasm for such wasteful spending. The Hollywood crowd is always lecturing on how people should be more generous to various groups but will waste $35,000 on one of these creations. However, I still love Justine' s videos. Just have no time for Hollywood hypocrites.

Same here. I love Justine's take on fashion and sustainability. I can't see much sustainability in those costumes. On another note: I really wish that men would be more courageous in choosing outfits. This is one opportunity where they could and so few of them dare and do ...

@@susanb1511 just an extra information: it's wasteful I know and I agree, buuut eventually it is also an opportunity for the designers show important causes. In 2018 (or 2017, not sure) Gisele Bundchen wear a dress there was made from a specific type of silk and that outfit brought attention for the susteinability question and animal subject at the prodution of silk. It's a little little little thing but it's a thing :) (Sorry about bad english, not my natural language)

Susan B I’m trying to understand how $35,000 spent on labor is ‘wasteful’. Garment workers are not ‘the wealthy’ and if you ask them, I’m sure they would tell you they take great pride in their work, were excited to be a part of the collaboration, AND they cannot wait until next year!

Camp is a slang (in Britain anyway). When you say a bloke is camp, it means he has some aesthetic, esp feminine, elements about him. It is a little similar to what the word gay used to mean. Camp is just extravagant, over-the-top, somewhat feminine and aesthetic.
@jenl2530
@jenl2530 5 лет назад
The American idea of camp is a bit different; more satire or parody. It was embraced by drag culture, but doesn't really reference feminity or masculinity specifically.
@marybaldwin1084
@marybaldwin1084 5 лет назад
Yes, but also a little silly. In my mind Camp comes from trying to achieve a super high (exaggerated) fashion look with ordinary materials at hand. Like playing “dress-up.” It totally comes out of the drag scene. In order for a man to look like a fashionable woman, everything has to be overdone, cartoonish. For me Christian Siriano won.
@GpuInDanger
@GpuInDanger 5 лет назад
Like androgynous fashion. .?
@marybaldwin1084
@marybaldwin1084 5 лет назад
Jimi Hendrix it can be androgynous, but it doesn’t have to be. I am a woman, but if I dress like Jessica Rabbit, that is Camp. I think the word itself probably comes from Summer Camp. For most of the last century, it was a tradition of the middle and upper classes to send their children to a few weeks of camp somewhere out in the mountains. See the movie “Meatballs,” with Bill Murray. At these camps, they typically have a talent show, or skits around the campfire, and the campers dress up for different parts, however costumes, sets, props are all limited to what they have on hand, so nothing is realistic, everything is exaggerated, mop head can be a wig, a bedsheet is a dress, etc. The performances are amateur, comic, silly, ridiculous, over the top. The yoga party in the film Animal House is very Camp.

Ezra Miller is the winner for me. Both the mixed masc/fem elegant look but also the execution and the confidence in his own persona. Katy Perry and Lady Gaga are more of the same, they don't surprise me.
@saharsummer1794
@saharsummer1794 5 лет назад
lady gaga is actually a genius if you look behind it - she wore a sequence of outfits to reflect that camp is multifaceted which is what Susan Sontag says in her essay. Her and some others were the only ones to actually dig into it so it wasn't shocking but was well-thought

Céline reminded me of the old costumes of Cher back in the day. I could not have thought of any better idea for the Gala. It seemed like throwing a Halloween Party & some guests refusing to dress up, their loss! Katie & Gaga nailed it.

Ezra Miller always has the most extravagant but so beautiful outfits. IMO he's (or his designers are) better at it than even Gaga and Katy Perry. They often wear just batshit crazy stuff, totally ignoring the rules of fashion (Katy Perry was a chandelier, burger, cupcake, christmas tree... mostly in her shows, and Lady Gaga was dressed in literal meat, a jellyfish, a cloud...). But Ezra Miller has been dancing the line of Fashion and Crazy Stuff ever since he's been prominent on red carpets. Androgynous styles, body makeup, very versatile styles of head and facial hair, crazy prints and fabrics... but it always clearly comes from fashion! Not to say that Gaga's and Perry's styles are not admirable and interesting, it's just that, in my opinion, Ezra Miller does it slightly better and more interestingly. 😊

This was great fun to watch, Justine. I actually like Alexa Chung's take on the camp theme with her own design, as she is known for her casual young boy/little girl personal style,.Her Met outfit was of extremely ornate precious fabric, so short it was like a shirt, body-hugging, and her hat and purse matched. Over the top for her, and I'm sure she would never wear that style again, so I think that for her it was campy.

Here's my opinion: Ezra and Jared Leto should change places XD For me Ezra was insanely awesome 10/10, flawless on flick. Jared's head was not as realistic as Ezra Miller's optical illusion make up and although Leto was fabulous, I really think Ezra should be above him. I also think Harry Styles was so beautiful and in theme...It was kind of sad to not see him being mentioned in here. But I mostly agree! Well done

So enjoyable...thank you Justine. Loved Jordan Dunn, Diane von Furstenburg and Katy Perry's choices!
