America has never seen health like this before | health care
The USA has never seen health like this before. Despite our knowledge about diabetes and the medicines available, more people are exercising, fewer people smoke, and even Obamacare….…. Why is our health getting worse?
Because we have yet to address the actual cause of the problem.
80% of disease is preventable with preventative habits…yet, 98% of our healthcare budget is spent on individual treatment and only 2% on prevention. Seems like that money could be better spent. It’s estimated that 12% of the US adult population is affected by five or more chronic diseases and accounts for 40% of all healthcare spending. Patients with five or more chronic conditions spend fourteen times more on health services than people with no chronic conditions. These are the rates of cancer incidence (number of new cancers per year).
The incidence of smoke-related cancer declined, as expected, because of a decline in smoking rates. The incidence of cancers detectable by better and more frequent screenings (like prostate and breast cancer) increased because we’re catching them earlier. But the incidence of most other cancers--especially those correlated with obesity and metabolic syndrome…things like uterine, pancreatic, and liver cancer -- increased by about 30%. As a whole, more and more people are getting cancer every year.
Sure genetics contributes to that. Some cancers are purely genetic based. For example, a condition called Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is caused by a specific congenital defect that guarantees colon cancer development.
Overall, genetics only contributes ~20% of most cancers.
Smoking and diet’s contribution?
50%. The leading causes of morbidity and mortality are the most costly in the US. Cancer, cardiovascular disease, dementia, and type 2 diabetes. Most of these stem from being metabolically ill and are heavily impacted by our food.
At least 60% of our healthcare spending is wasted on diseases that could have been prevented.
And guess where that money is coming from?
Social Security. But it's only going to worsen because you need young, healthy people to pay into social security.
But what happens when the young and healthy are becoming less and less nutritious?
I mean, adolescents would never develop metabolic diseases like type 2 diabetes. But that started changing in the 1980s.
So if the problem is metabolic illness…what’s the solution?
Real food. Unprocessed or minimally processed food. The answer is simple and easy, but doing that might not be for many people. But there’s no alternative. There is no magic pill that can fix metabolic illness. Most people know that eating crappy food leads to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease….I mean, they’re all related to obesity, right?
But what about most types of cancer, autoimmune disease, dementia, and even psychiatric illness? Is it really possible that those are related to eating processed foods?
Yes. They’re all becoming more and more prevalent over the last 50 years, which is the same timeline as our diet getting worse with processed foods.
-- Cancer is being diagnosed at earlier ages than it used to. Over the last few decades, as we’ve consumed more and more processed food, the incidence of obesity-related cancers continues to rise. Think colon, liver, pancreatic, uterine, and kidney cancer. In fact, just last year, the recommended age to screen for colon cancer was lowered from 50 to 45 because of the rise in cases among young and middle-aged people. No doubt, genetics play a role in cancer, but there is a solid case that environmental exposures cause mutations in DNA.
For example, the UV rays from the sun damage the DNA in your skin cells, leading to skin cancer. But mutations in our cells occur throughout the body every day, like every minute. In other words, your cells initiate cancer all the time. But your cells, and especially your immune system, fix these mutations before cancer actually develops.
It gets nipped in the bud. Until it doesn’t. That’s when cancer promotion happens. That’s when the cancer cell grows and divides over and over again. And as wild as this may sound, highly processed food, like hot dogs, French fries, and Oreos, actually feeds those cancer cells precisely what it needs to keep growing and dividing. Let’s say you sink your teeth into a Krispy Kreme donut.

SAD (Standard American Diet). You are right on it. I lost a hundred lbs thus far and reversed a dozen medical problems related to Metabolic Associated Fatty Liver Disease. My savior was a KETO diet (whole food and get rid of the sugar and processed seed oils). Keep up the good work because a lot of doctors are still just as much in the dark as the general population regarding their diets. I had to diagnose myself after the test came back and it was way to obvious to me what had to be done. My doctor was shocked when I returned and how dramatically my vitals and test were returning to normal without the use of drugs or medical intervention. :-)

You are the best Dr Mike.......I've learned so much. A couple of years ago I converted my husband into a Vegan (plant based mainly) in order to avoid surgery. Unfortunately, unlike you, most doctors have no clue about nutrition or even want to know about it. All the doctors want to do is push a quick fix of prescription meds and surgery. After just a couple weeks of becoming Vegan, he physically changed, you can see it in his face, looked healthier. And after several months when we went back to testing, his numbers came back normal. No need for surgery that would have ruined his GI system for life, no more losing body parts. Nobody listens when I try to tell them this story and just simply change their eating habits to live a healthier life. I'm losing friends younger than me. I'm so tired, I don't even bring it up anymore. I can't tell you how important what you are doing, coming from a smart savvy doctor, maybe then more will listen.

It is said that if you eliminate sugar from your diet you get rid of 80% of your problems. Three years ago I dumped my statins, went about losing 18% of my body weight, increased my exercise levels and dumped crisps and most processed foods. And my diet leans towards HFLC, not keto though. My blood markers have never looked better (March 2022), and at 67 I have never felt better.

This is the first time I've seen a clear explanation about how the food you eat impacts systems in the body, mechanically. The cancer explanation was a revelation to me. I have metabolic syndrome and not one of the many doctors has suggested cutting out sugar and processed foods but they have suggested surgery. I used to be thin and healthy. The medical system is broken but also the food we eat. Sugar is in everything that is processed, even bread. Before the 1970s, high fructose corn syrup wasn't used. I vividly recall when the "Big Gulp" was introduced and sodas got bigger. I feel like things really started deteriorating in the 1980s. That's when fast food really exploded.

I started a clean Keto diet a year and a half ago. That's not only Keto but watching the types of fat I consumed and greatly limiting processed foods and wheat. Within 3 months I lost 40 lbs, was off my heart meds, diabetes meds, high blood pressure meds and constipation meds. One doesn't need to go to such extremes untill they've had the problems I've had, heart attack, stroke, afib, type 2 diabetes and a partial colorectal recection (FAP he mentions at 7:30). If you start eating healthy before then you can stay healthy longer. Cut your sugar way back and don't eat hydrogenated oils, Canola, vegatable and the like. Now I cycle off and on Keto and still endulge in the occasional icecream and doughnut, but even when off Keto my diabetes is still much better and controlled by only 1 drug alone instead of the prior 2.

I have always tried to take care of my health, I am 56. I have never been over weight and stay very active. This pandemic allowed me some time to double down and really lean what contributes to overall health. There is a lot of information out there and plenty of dogmatic followers of this diet or that. In all that information, there is a general agreement that we eat too much, too often and too many processed foods. I have to say, this video provides a well balanced overview of the most significant threat to public health, out collective diet. You cannot exercise away a bad diet. I learned that I was healthier than most but I realize I had some problems with my diet. I now am very careful to avoid sugars in any form. I reduced my overall carb intake and limit my eating to a 5 hour window, 2-7 PM. Best advice I got was to shop the perimeter of the super market and avoid all the aisles. Dr. Hansen is right that we cannot fix health care without fixing our diets. Our Government subsidizes the big four crops that are the basis of every processed food, Wheat, Corn, Soybeans and Rice. This allows food companies access to cheap ingredients to make pop tarts, cereal, frozen pizza and everything else. These processed foods are actually cheaper than whole food alternatives. Instead of spending trillions on dialysis, heart surgery and everything else, perhaps we could spend 100's of millions subsidizing whole foods. Drop some of the supports for the big four processed food ingredients. If the working poor saw fresh broccoli for $1/pound and boxed mac and cheese at $3, we would see better diets on average.

As a physician I have been advocating healthy diet and some exercise as a part of routine care as long as I have practiced. Some are willing and others find that eating whole foods is too much of a sacrifice. The problem is that food is intertwined with culture and even personal identity. Compound that with a toxic food environment and food deserts, the problem becomes writ large. Thank you for the video. Hope it inspires as many people as possible.

A very interesting presentation. I was an RN in the 70’s on a medical ward. We had very few Adult Onset Diabetes patients. You could count the number on one hand over a few weeks. As a former RN, who had studied nutrition, my children ate a very healthy diet. We avoided fast food - that was a treat. They were also involved in a number of sports. My one issue is with the increase of Mental Illness. In the 60’s, depression was a word that was whispered. It was something to be vigorously denied - to have a person with any type of mental illness in one’s family was considered a scandal. Years later, it gained more acceptance. In my family, it was generational and me and many of my siblings suffered from various forms of depression, GAD, severe phobias. Had Post Partum Psychosis after 1 child and Post Partum Depression after another. The meds for those illnesses at that time were pretty frightening - Nardil and Anafranil. Learned to not discuss my experiences with anyone - I was looked upon as a lunatic. As the years went on, slowly, mental illness started to become an acceptable topic. And SSRI’s were not as frightening as the older medications. Metabolic problems may have greatly increased, but it does not cover the entire picture for every illness. As well, because the US does not have Medicare, many illnesses cannot truly be studied, since a large segment of the population is not able to afford care. We

Dr you were spot on with everything except one thing, you mentioned and inferred something about public health campaign spending. So right back at you , if you can't recognize the problem then you can't fix it. More spending won't solve a single thing, it requires either hard measures like taxing bad food and or drinks and or ,I think needs to be and a bipartisan political campaign stating why this is required. User pays just like tobacco or alcohol have taxes to pay for societal costs why shouldn't bad food which now costs much more than alcoholic and smokers who actually pay their way and subsidize the fatties to put it bluntly.

@@Albopepper the actual cause is obesity. Type 1 is hereditary and cannot be eradicated by diet. They HAVE to take insulin. Type 2? Totally rectified by losing weight and adjusting the diet to exclude carbs, especially high glycemic foods. If ya wanna call that definition oversimplified, then so are you palsy. Cuz it makes perfect sense. And has been proven time and again that it’s diet related ffs! If you think that it isn’t being properly broken down for ya, do it yourself Bruh. Instead of bitching about it here. Go do some gardening. That’s usually fairly meditative. Something you obviously need.

As someone who studies this as well as deals with it, the most difficult thing is knowing how to eat to fix metabolic disorder
@drbettyschueler3235

So many of my friends have type-2 diabetes and it is so sad to see them continue to eat the processed foods that cause their illness. And it isn't just the processed foods--they also overeat as if they were doing hard work, or exercise, and needed the extra calories. I know it is hard to resist all the delicious food available today. There are fast-food restaurants or 24-hour marts on just about every corner it seems. I live within a two-block walk of four of these. And when I'm tired, it is tempting to just go out and get something to eat. So I make a variety of frozen dinners I can just pop in the microwave whenever I'm too tired to cook something. I use whole foods that freeze well, taste good when nuked, and don't add inches to my waist line. My Achilles heel is pastry and I'm still working on getting that where it should be.

Allopathic medicine by definition doesn't cure, just provides treatments till you drop dead. Hence, life expectancy in USA is the same as in 3rd world countries: Panama, Barbados, Cuba, Lebanon.

In order to treat my Type II Diabetes (due to 20 years of living in the US), I just did one thing. I came back to my country of birth south India and followed a simple vegetarian diet that my mother taught while I was young. After about 5 years, my blood sugar levels are back to normal values and stopped taking Metformin. I did not do any physical exercise at all including walking. Just food control.

Thank You Dr.Hansen, Your videos in the last 2 years have helped me keep my worrying for and about my wife stuck in the Philippines down, and also helped her and her family when they caught covid in April 2016. Unfortunately it took my sister in law in my wifes arms on the bathroom floor in the Philippines, but your advice and constant up dates on covid were extremely helpful for us all. I've missed you posting videos regularly as you had been. I am happy you have continued to do so. And you're in New York, one of my favorite cities in the world. I have made two near zero cost changes in my life in the last 3 months. Fermenting foods like yogurt/sauerkraut and using store bought refrigerated Kimchi all the time. Also made a spread sheet and assigned points to various body weight exercises to track and gamify it daily. Just doing a little exercise spread out here and there no crazy long workouts. Push ups, sit ups, lunges, squats, wall holds, planks, leg raises, get ups, burpees, walking/jogging on the spot, playing with a 10lbs medicine ball. I have dropped a shirt size and in an easy way improved all my capacities in my exercises and even improved my elevation gain ability on hikes without much hiking.Low cost and can be done outside or in front of RU-vid/Netflix. 15min a day is 90 hrs a year.

Keep it up, Paul, especially on the days where temptation pulls you toward the old, bad habits. I've had a similar journey. The most amazing thing is how _accessible_ good health and feelings are: just eat real food and get 5-15 minutes of legitimate cardiovascular exercise every day. That people do not reach out and grab this good feeling is only possible if they've been tempted into bad habits.

It’s not about ingesting too much sugar alone, it’s ingesting any food that increases blood glucose: wheat flour, sugar, oats, rice, potatoes, potato chips, fries, quinoa, corn, corn flour, corn chips, popcorn. I thought it was about sugar and cut way down on sugar for years, but bread, pasta, popcorn, potatoes corn products were still part of each day menu. Became insulin resistant but reversed it with low carb high fat diet. Hypertension I had for years was reversed in 5 days. Won’t go back to anything wheat, or high carb.

This was a much needed video…true and hard to watch. I believe every American needs to see this. Every child and their parents needs to see this video. It succinctly presents the generational choices made by our society which has left many Americans as beggars to their own demise. I am one of those people whose food choices and lifestyle consequences made me obese and riddled with inflammation. However, I am 80 pounds less obese than I was 14 months ago. I did not take a weight loss drug nor did I have bariatric surgery of any kind. Through medical guidance and redesigning my dietary choices, I was able to go from an A1c of 41 to 35. I focus on eating non-processed, non-manufactured foods including clean animal proteins, vegetables, nuts, seeds, whole-fat dairy, and berries. My daily goal is to eat less than 25 grams of carbohydrates. I drink only water, zero-calorie electrolyte drinks and coffee. The only sweeteners I use are Stevia and monk fruit. I walk 10,000 steps four days a week. If I want a cookie, I make it from scratch following ketogenic recipes. I am still obese. My goal is to become merely overweight in three months per the BMI definition. My wake up call was a diagnosis of NAFLD and pre-diabetes. I have moved away from the brink of disease. All of my blood and urine test results are now in the normal range. I encourage others to get with a medical doctor and dietitian for guidance along with blood and urine tests to monitor your progress toward improved health. In my experience, prevention has been easier and less expensive than the treatments I would have needed to stay alive. Take care of yourself and be well.
