Metal Casting Tip: Improving Surface Finish of Metal Castings with a Tapered Sprue Former

In this video, I talk about one way I hope to improve the surface finish of my metal castings. I plan to do this through the use of a tapered sprue former. This will allow me to make a narrow, tapered sprue to pour the molten metal into the sand casting mold, controlling the flow of metal and reducing turbulence. This is one quick tip to help in the metal casting process and hopefully will make my aluminum and bronze castings better. There is no melting metal in this particular video, just me blabbering on and on. I also nearly cut myself with a sharpened trowel, so there's that.

Old foundryman is fantastic. Pouring basin and tapered sprue works well. Made my castings much better.

I have to say. I truly enjoy your channel. I was turned to you by Black Beard's 100 k shout out. You have become my fav youtube channel. I'm a fabricator by trade. Your humor and original 80's commercial approach is inviting. And man I laugh so much watching you while enjoying the content at the same time. I wanted to let you know you have made some very bad days good and I can't thank you enough. I'm glad I found you and I hope you're here to stay. You will have 1 million subs soon so at least I can say I was here near the beginning. If your at a million anyway. Haha. Keep up the great work Paul.

I can see slowing down the flow when pouring into sand to keep from blowing the sand into the casting. I run ceramic shell. My sprues are fat and straight with a big pouring cup providing all the head pressure I'll ever need. So far, no surface finish issues that aren't blamed on pouring too hot. A good thermocouple helps prevent that.

That skinny tapered sprue pin will make it really easy to keep your sprues choked throughout your pours; looking forward to seeing some sweet castings!

thinking about it , and it does make sence to pour it slowly but to prevent any vortexes or stuff like that and fast enough so it doesnt solidify before the pour is finished it might actually be good to lay the to cast part at a slight upward angle (maibe put the mould on a slight raise (block of wood) oposite the pouring funnel ) that will have the funnel at an angle so the metal rolling along one side of it preventing the metal from falling down intoo the hole and mixing with the dross like you mentioned setting it at an angle has the metal come in at the lowest point and flowing toward the airing hole untill thats filled to the top i think if you do that right the little bit of dross stuff youre talking about that gets created during the pour intoo the mould might stay in front of the flow of metal being poured in floating on top and works itself up and out of the vent at the other end might be worth a try , i dont know enough about metal pouring to know if it will work

Great video, I have a foundry myself and I have a question, porcelain filters help retaining impurities, but it helps to remove or pop air bubbles at the moment of pouring the aluminum?? I will try the cone shape, let see what happens.

The key is to keep the sprue filled during the entire casting. One trick done by industry is to have a pouring basin on top, and a plug in the sprue, so when you have some melt in the basin, you remove the plug so the air in the sprue is pressed in front of the melt.

i think the surface finish also depends on the investment powder you use. (I know you use delft clay). I am also an amateur caster. Earlier I used to use simple construction plaster for my lost wax process. Recently I made the switch to jewelry grade investment powder. And boom.....smooth surface finish. I think it has to do with the particle size. May be try sifting your delft clay and see if it improves???

Congrats, now you no longer have sprue envy... Now you just need one of those fancy cast rammers ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DaAgE5a7NIs.html and consider a fancy pair of tongs like this set ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wtDHaXcS6Tg.html

Here is the video Paul mentioned. I use it there and in the last three or four casting videos I've done. Not that I'm trying to poach views from Paul... there's probably some RU-vidy kinda term for that... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q5PEllD4MrI.html

@@PaulsGarage if controlling the flow of the liquid metal is so important why not try using the Sprue former on an angle to further slow down the liquid? Why does nobody else do this?
