Handfuls of coins are dug live on a UK beach in perfect search conditions. **for FAQ click 'Show more' below** Other finds include an 18ct gold ring and a Georgian medallion .See just how quickly and easily the targets can be located and recovered.
28th Aug 2012 - Wow! Over 300,000 views of something I knocked on the spur of the moment. I'm amazed, thank-you very much for watching guys.
FAQ;
Q.What metal detector were you using when you recorded this video?
A.Minelab E-Trac.
Q. I'm thinking of taking up metal detecting as a hobby. Which metal detector would you recommend to me?
A. The Garrett Ace 250 offers a good compromise between price, ease of use and performance.
Q. Do you ever sell your finds? Will you sell an item to me?
A. No, I never sell any finds. Every item recovered stays in my collection. The only exception is when the owner (loser) can be traced, in which case the item is returned.
Q. Where can I get one of those plastic sand scoops seen in the video?
A. Many online retailers sell them, just type 'plastic sand scoop' into a search engine. Since I recorded this video they've become more widely available and prices have dropped. Home-made versions made from things like empty food containers are not very robust, they soon fail when exposed to wet sand on the beach. I know from experience; I got through several myself before purchasing the real thing.
I'd like to say thank-you to Pingstick (Dave), who was already busy searching on the beach when I arrived to record this video. He kindly agreed to show his finds on camera and helped record a couple of scenes.
Best watched in HD.

GARY, thanks for your time to make this video for us; very appreciative. I'm toying with the idea of treasure hunting, picking locations amenable to time of year, seasons etc. Think it would be a great life, far more rewarding than sitting in the rocker.

I like your use of fast camera action. It clarified the search pattern you used, and your search etiquet, filling in the holes, even if the tide would eventually do it. Good job, and keep em coming.

Awesome videography. Especially liked the Benny Hill bit around the middle. Everyone should thank you guys each time we don't come home from the beach with a nail in our foot. Just got a Garrett Sea Hunter PI so I'll be working this side of the pond.

The harsh winter has made it very difficult to get out in the fields for quite a while, so it's great that conditions are finally improving. Good luck!

I do have to say, between beaches, tot lots, grass fields and dirt areas. Beaches seem to produce much more for amount of effort. Using a sand scoop even on wet sand is much faster than cutting plugs. Great video, thank you!

When I saw this I was thinking of my Dads hobby. He passed away in 2008 right on the beach. He had many good machines, x calliber, Sovereign,white,Pulse, tesoro, plus many other machine. I did it with him some times and I found some gold and silver. The gold has a low sound like a nickle!! Good hunting!!

It always amazes me watching detectorists go to the beach and finding all these coins and change... I mean who goes to the beach with coins in their pocket... or swim suit. I realize the potential for older coins and people dropping them in the past, but still with erosion, waves and surge you would think nothing would be found now.
@jimbettridge3123
@jimbettridge3123 9 лет назад
The ocean will actually deposit sand on the beach, and can be quite an amount at times Jessica, therefore sunken coins will remain there. I think they call that a "sand fill" tide. "Diggers" then hope for a tide that pulls the sand away so they are closer to the surface.

Well I am here in the US and just getting started in MDing. This has been one of the best videos I have watched where the beach technique you are using makes so much sense. When I ordered my detector I went with a plastic scoop because of this video and the way you scoop and then use the detector to see if you have your target in the scoop. Will get my first beach chance in early October along the East Coast. Hope items Irene churned up have not all been found by then. Thanks for sharing.....

Thanks for posting this video, I agree with your idea that it's best to clear the beach of trash, it makes it safer for everyone by reducing cuts on people's feet, also for children as they dig sand for making sand castles or burying each other.

cant wait to start this new hobby. Theres so much to metal detecting though, idk where to start! I'm thinking about getting the Ace 250. It looked like a good metal detector that was easy to use, and wasnt a piece of junk. I have been fascinated by treasure hunting my whole life. Now that I am older, I'll finally be able to afford my very own piece. Awesome video, and awesome finds. Keep hunting!, Chris

Thanks Wayne. I use a minimal amount of iron mask, no other discrimination at all. Complex discrimination patterns are a waste of time in my opinion. You will get loads of tips for the Explorer on the minelab owners forum (find it on google). It takes a fair few sessions to get used to, keep the settings simple, don't keep tinkering with them all the time and you will soon get used to it. Good luck! Gary

@TheBoontonBomber Hi , thanks very much, good luck to you on the beach. In the UK we switched to new decimal coinage in 1971. Before that a weird system was used which had 240 pennies and 20 shillings to each pound, those are what we call pre-decimal coins. Gary
