I noticed something at the end where he is wearing the Pearl shirt. He is involving his thumb a lot. Almost moving the fulcrum behind his thumb so that small movements of his index finger and/or thumb create a modified push pull. That's probably why he can play on a pillow or water with brushes. He creates his own rebound in a way that doesn't use much energy and very little movement.

Physiologically - I think he has to turn off his muscles faster than most humans in order to get that fast. It's just not the muscle contraction, it's the relaxation phase that has to be so so so fast. That was very enjoyable to watch you react!

This comment is very accurate. Drumming speed is ultimately a function of genetics. Think of it like the autism spectrum, you have people at one who have profound difficulties dealing with people and communicating and relating to them and at the other extreme you have truly empathic people with high emotional intelligence who are formidable communicators and influencers. With the physiology of drumming you have people at the far end of the spectrum with cerebral palsy who cannot relax their muscles and there is even a treatment it using Botox to allow kids to walk better, and on the other end we have people like this guy who can contract and relax his muscles extremely fast. The build up of lactic acid is proportional to the ATP release so there Fore he must also be both very efficient in his movements to minimise work done plus very efficient in moving lactic acidosis away from the muscles being used. No matter how much the average drummer practices and no matter how good their technique, performance will fall along a probability distribution curve where those at the extreme speed end have by chance received all the genes in the right combination to make this speed possible.

The scariest thing is how calm he is, like you said playing like butter lol. People go nuts on the drum kit and he's like sitting in Sunday Church while playing these insane beats and tempos Edit: High thought, I think his technique is something along the lines of two strokes with finger for the rebound and after the rebound of the second stroke is the wrist slamming it back down for the rebound for the finger technique again so three strokes in damn near a single rotation

His technique vaguely resembles Hannes Grossmann's "Hybrid" technique, though with lots of finger motion. Also his stick position changes slightly compared to Hannes'. It might seem subtle, but that little bit of wrist motion makes all the difference, especially in power, it's absolutely insane. Also, he's a very musical drummer that can apply phenomenal chops to the kit.

Though fingers may be involved, the whole support system for this is the wrist and the larger muscles in the arm, including the triceps and biceps. Mangini has been developing this technique for decades, and barehanded practice is an important part of developing it. Ricardo is obviously taking it to a new level!

Wahahaa. The lip brrrr at the end. That's how I feel with a lot of musicians. With affection and appreciation that is. I played crappy bass a lifetime ago for a couple of years and had heaps of friends playing all the intruments one can buy. And I remember enjoying it then and I still do. Keep on making this kind of content. Music does not make sense on any logic scale and it is what makes us all human. Even if you have AI creating it, you still need a human to enjoy it.

I used to play marching snare and my intuitions say it’s mostly fingers with a certain wrist movement that he’s not completely sharing or explaining. I think it’s mostly fingers but still... he’s insane wow

No! Don't do it! There's more than enough bassists that can't play, another one we don't need. So, what you're saying is bass is easier to play than drums? Maybe the "music" you play, but I suppose you're just not into challenging yourself, huh?
@themadscientistmusician2262

@@zwiastunburzy7188 lol, irony in that is, I've been playing guitar 30 years, Bass 25, and drums 1. I'll not stop, was just a joke, music is in my bones.

@@themadscientistmusician2262 All good.👍 I've been playing those as well for even longer. What I find hard to take is the arthritis that has attacked my joints, hands especially, from driving trucks for the last 30 years. I still love playing, but it is becoming more painful to do so, and the loss of strength of grip is an accompanying frustration.It's something that sneaks up on you, totally unexpected, and I've tried all the "cures", medicinal and various other remedies, some help a little, some not. It's something that I would not wish upon anyone, especially a fellow musician, so when another player speaks of quitting voluntarily, I momentarily lose my sense of humour.I hope you continue to play as long as you possibly can, I'm sixty, and I still have so much to learn musically. I wonder if a hand transplant would be of benefit? I nearly put "Lol" there, but I'm far too old for that even.😁

I knew it was those last two digits! Ring and Pinkie! You can see the twitch in the beginning! Edit: Okay, okay... I slow down the video. He holds his wrist with a slight "piano arch," otherwise known as the standard violin arch when you are a beginner. *Imagine taping a tiny Cutie* (Clementine/Mandarine fruit) *to your wrist.* _I have played piano, violin, and flute. All in that order. The Cutie taped to your wrist was an actual practice by my first two teachers, and what a difference in my playing it made!_
