I could see that working very well on aluminium., that gives me a few ideas. You are getting very good at timing the off switch.

As a fellow shaper owner I always enjoy shaper content. And the use of the radius tool is an interesting idea. I think it has promise. Two things though. From using such tools on the lathe I find I use the same idea of coming in from a couple of directions doing partial cuts to reduce chatter. So I think that's a good way on the shaper too. But I find that I get my best results first from very reduced RPM and secondly from flooding the cutter and work with good cutting oil. I can't help thinking that a slower transit speed and more oil might aid with the shaper results too. I'll have to have a go at it myself and see I guess. And I feel like your setup could also benefit from some load equalizer feet on your stand legs. The poor machine has a serious case of head nodding going on.... :D

Thanks Bruce, slower speed /stroke, I'll give that a try. My base stand has retractable wheels and I was lazy and didn't retract them all the way, so yeah extra wiggle.. ATB...dean

Nice to see you continuing experimenting. And indeed, form tools chatter easily. That's where spring loaded toolholders come in. But I never used one...

Hi a radius tool on a shaper is better fed safely with step over method as the clapper box action can pull the cutting tool down into the work piece . When setting depth of cut it is advisable to take the back lash of the vertical feed leadscrew at all times. This is normal machine shop practice. B. Reilly Glasgow.

Dean, you voice say's it all....your are having fun trying out new ways to use the shaper, and thats great. I must get in high gear to get the ole Klopp 450mm up and going to join in of what she will do. Thxs for building a fire under my B__T to get back on its restoration 🙂

On my shaper it’s the same with form tools, it’s quick to tell you when they are dull. I usually use a oversized hss tool when I have to do them and that seems to help

Cool. It's nice that you're trying different things. All I've done with mine is straight cuts. I need to step up my game I guess.

Hi Mick, yeah my master plan was to try something different every week. Life sure likes to mess up one's plans. But getting some shaper time here and there.. ATB...Dean
