Heilung means healing in German - this was their first performance recorded at Castlefest in 2017 - they are definitely a vibe - the bones, as well as the horns are real - the ends of his horns are a form of Triskell - the album is about how a village is corrupted by the violence of war. Alfadhirhaiti, Norupo, Anoana, Hamrer Hippyer from Lifa and In Maidjan from Lifa are all good for the rabbit hole spelunker.

The possible origin of this song is taken from the Eggja stone, a stone with runic carvings found in Norway. The gist of the story is a group of men on a ship landed by a village. The ship was broken down, the stone talks about worn oarlocks and a tired mast top (think Viking longship I suppose). The men decided to attack the village instead of asking for some help. The attackers were killed by the villagers. This unsettels the once peaceful village. Further songs in this album/show look at how the shamen and the villagers are trying to heal from this ordeal and return back to the peaceful times

I mean, the group means Healing, right? But the backstory is new to me, so thanks!
@irisreaders

Given the history, I believe the it is the Romans who are the enemies. Heilung comes from the German meaning 'healing' and the villagers are supposed to the Germanic tribes. Most of Heilung's songs from this album are restoration of runes in Proto-Germanic

All of the bones, shells and antlers they have on stage are real, yes. This is their first concert ever. The second one a few days later was at our small festival Midgardsblot in Maria's hometown of Horten, Norway where I am the festival photographer. Their entire concert was a long magical ritual, wonderfully relaxing and mesmerizing. Have seen them a few times now and am equally captivated each time. Heilung is like a drug. At first you are like "this is a cool song". Then, after about a millon hours of listening to everything you can possibly find, you realize you are singing words in a language you dont know while basically doing a sort of haka/war dance in your laundry room while you fold your clothes. I just stumbled across Wardruna in this exact video about a week ago!! They popped up in my feed and I immediately went down a FANTASTIC Wardruna rabbit hole. Sooo good! Growing up in America - you are simply American. And don't get me wrong, I love America with all her faults and will fight to the death for Old Glory... but I wanted to know where I came from. So, started learning about my Norwegian heritage and - I know this sounds dumb... I hate even typing it - but it felt RIGHT. The music, it SOUNDED right, the pictures and videos of the landscape FELT right... I cant explain it. Its like its all soothing somehow. I know it sounds like I'm an American idiot but... like I said, I cant explain it. My goal is to someday travel to where family is/was (apparently the Smola/Kristiansund/Surnadal areas) to explore and see if BEING there speaks to my bones even louder than the music does
@HH-hd7nd
@HH-hd7nd 10 месяцев назад
9:58 They're not exactly screaming - this is throat singing. Their music doesn't really fit into any modern genre - they try to recreate music like it was in times past. The members of the band are from Denmark, Norway and Germany btw. The name of the band - Heilung - is the German word for healing. Their music is inspired by old runic inscriptions of the germanic iron age and the Viking age, and they use a variety of languages: German, English, Gothic (not in the modern way of the word goth being used, this means they use the language of the old germanic tribe called the Goths), Old High German, Icelandic, Latin, Old English (which is also known as Old Low German and Old Saxon btw - the language of the Saxons, Proto-Norse, Proto-Germanic, and Viking age Old Norse.

Hey. Here to clarify a thing or two. So the bones that Maria is using are real, and Kai (guy that was “metal screaming”) is using a form of throat singing. He does that through all of the songs in the LIFA performance. Check out the rest of the show, treat yourself. And welcome to the Heilung family.

If memory serves, the LIFA performance tells a story about a peaceful village that essentially gets dragged into a conflict. Krigsgaldr is the village pleading their case to be left alone. The back and forth starting at 6:53 is the village stating all the things they'd prefer to do instead, however the response to each thing is "But you only understand the language of the sword." Going along with this concept, Alfadhirhaiti is the village's call to war, and later songs in the performance are the aftermath of the battle.

Heilung don't generally like recording their live shows because they want people to come and live the experience. it's not just something you show up and watch. it's something you feel. and their new album is pretty fire as well. which is surprising considering how high the bar was with this album. and one of their songs is in the teaser trailer for Hellblade 2 and that trailer with the song gives me goosebumps

Not only real bones...HUMAN REAL BONES. A fan donated them, sadly he was terminally ill. Heilung has a special permit to travel with the bones (human and animal). Maybe the speech/growls/chanting doesn't sound human to you because they are doing a vocal technique that is also used in mongolian chanting. Is like having two or three voices but is only one person doing it (I don't know the actual term, English is not my first language). If you listen to The Hu (a mongolian rock band) you can notice what I'm saying. Fun fact: Maria doesn't stop to play the bones in all the song

Hearing this music opened up something sleeping inside me a connection to my ancestral roots and spirituality. I found a ring of trees in a wooded area a perfect ring of trees probably atleast 250 years old and sat in there and all of a sudden the noises from around all disappeared and i thought i sat there 15 minutes or half an hour but i lost 2 hours just sitting there in the ring and i have never before felt more at peace. In Maidjan is a must - and watch the live version from this show - Lifa. Maria's vocals are insane. I heard that when she did the original recording, her husband (produce/musician) and the lead singer kind of just told her to do whatever she wanted. So, she threw a bunch of vocal tricks and techniques at them thinking they would chop it up and sample it out as needed. It sounded so good, they kept the whole thing exactly as she sang it. BTW - nice catch in the call and response high note

I am glad that you give this extremely exceptional Nordic group a chance. I tell you a little about its history. The group, which are two boys and one girl, have Norwegian, Danish and German nationality and uses instruments such as horns of different animals, drums, human bones, rattles with human ashes, bells, stones, all to go back to the first musical compositions that They were able to interpret 1,000 years ago, in the iron age in northern Europe. All the letters are taken from carved gadgets from the era of the Nordic iron, such as arrowheads, bows, swords, rune stones and recite poems and psalms of war, peace and protection. Whereupon and for this, heilung, which means healing in German, is in close collaboration with archaeologists specializing in the field. The languages used by heilung are several. Among them are Latin, Old Danish, German and English. They were so successful with their first album that they had to release a new live album, which includes 2 new songs. Also a video of that album live and this year they released their second work, futha, which is a much more feminine work. His first album, Ofnir, is much more aggressive and masculine. During the concerts some representations of how these ancient rituals of the iron age could be made. Also just finished the soundtrack of the video game Hellblade 2. The languages used are english and runic ¿Old danis? The texts of the song have been extracted from the Eggia stone. Eggja's stone (also known as Eggum's or Eggjum's stone) This is a large flat stone with runic inscriptions that covered a tomb dating from the period between 650 and 700 and that was discovered while plowing a field in 1917 at Eggja farm in Sogn og Fjordane, Norway. When it was found, the inscription was on the underside of the slab covering a man's grave, so that it could not be read from the outside (like the Kylver stone). The stone is currently in the Bergen museum. It has about 200 runes, making it the longest inscription engraved with letters of the ancient futhark alphabet, although some runes have a transitional form to the young futhark. The lyrics says the following following the interpretation of the archaeologists who have studied it: The home fades. Vil launched a deadly horde upon them. The oars and mast were destroyed. Who brought? Who brought the horde to this distant land? The fishes of the streams of Firnoy. They swim adrift. From the land of bright meadows. Who brought? Who brought the horde to this distant land? A hug.

Also, if you have not yet seen this band The Hu.... A must see. Their guitar alone will have you in envy. They did a remake of one of their songs. Look up The HU - Wolf Totem feat. Jacoby Shaddix of Papa Roach. If you have not already.

Fun trivia fact: One of their songs is used for the trailer for Hellblade 2: Senuas's Sacrifice. Even more, the guy who does the super metal sounding throat singing worked with the woman who voices and motion captures Senua so in the trailer you can hear both his vocals and hers. It's insane and so amazing

Maria (female) sings about the calm and quiet life she and her tribe lives. English (male) song is about how they get invaded by others. Like "leave us alone but you only understand the language of the swords" The low pitch male (invader) and the 2 others from the tribe, talks to eachother.

It's definately an experience to see them live. Their soundman, Finn Janssen, is a master of subtlety...you nailed it. By the way, those are human bones. She has to have a backup set of animal bones when they go to certain countries. Do yourself a favor and go check out more Heilung!

The name of the band means healing and their music indeed brings your healing deep in your core, the vibrations in their instruments, tones etc.. helps your brain and soul heal and leave you light weight after listening to them. A strong and powerful peaceful feeling . A lot of people find it demonic but is actually very healing , so I say don’t judge the book by its cover. The history of Heilung is deeper than what it looks

Hey John. I found your channel off a recommendation when you 1st discovered the amazing BAND-MAID. Been following since. If you are opening the gates wide open like this I have some insanely good international bands I think you'll get a real kick out of. Different, from street performance to full blown orchestra with native Norse percussion and lead strings. Just examples. No crap, Honest. You'll be blown away. Comment if you want me to shoot a few to you. P.S. this rocked. I think the singer sings solo too and with other bands if Im not mistaken. Real sorry her name slips my mind right now.

I love the fact that this is a band that drops a massive honor to their ancient heritage speaking in suuuuper old germanic and then adding the dialogue of the two voices in himself is amazing!!! this seriously looks like a show that is wild but should be looked into with respect regardless of how different it is. Loving it!

from flamenco to this. This is just amazing. After watching Vikings and buying my own arm ring. Im filipino though but with a mix of east german/dutch/ashkenazi ancestry and spanish ancestries. Never felt among filipinos though. Always an outcast from the rest of the group. Only when I play basketball when I get to socialize but mostly I go solo. With all the internet can offer I can be anywhere in the world, well atleast culturally. Hail Ragnar! Hail Odin! Hail the Viking gods!

Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of witnessing a live performance by Heilung. Their music is nothing short of phenomenal. With its intricate compositions, it demands a high caliber of artistry to be executed flawlessly in a live setting - a feat that Heilung achieves with remarkable skill. This is further complemented by their sound engineers, who, from behind the mixing panel, masterfully balance and sculpt the auditory landscape, ensuring every note is conveyed to the audience with maximum impact. The concert was an unparalleled display of auditory and performative excellence; it remains the most impressive live show I have ever attended, both visually and acoustically.
