H the "Keyboardist ",his name is Richard Barbieri, started with a band called Japan. He often says that he can't play Keyboards.BUT Richard paints with sound-a soundscape. But he also has some good solo work. The other guitarist is Mr John Westley, and comes from the USA .Regards jon
Thank you for reacting to Porcupine Tree. That last solo is one of my favorites by Steven Wilson. I think John Wesley uses a piezo pick up or something along those lines to get that acoustic guitar sound but I’m not a guitarist 😊 And you will love the version of The Sky Moves Sideways from Cologne 2007 since you enjoy Gavin Harrison so much. The studio version is much longer and more atmospheric 😊
Time Flies, Fear of a Blank Planet, Lazarus, Heart Attack in a Lay-by, Even less, don’t hate me , Russia on ice, Trains or maybe something from last years comeback album, Herd Culling, Dignity, or Harridan. Man there are so many great tracks. You might also look into Steven Wilsons solo work. Luminol, Ancestral, Refuge, Detonation, Drive home, Routine, Deform to form a star, First regret/three years older and these still only scratch the surface. And yes, whether it is Porcupine tree or Steven Wilson solo, they do sound so crisp in the flesh, great engineers for their shows.
For me it's not so much about witch part is the best. I think the mix and how they make the parts work together so well is what makes there music for what it is.
I suggest Dark Matter live version. Another great song with amazing keyboard parts and beautiful guitar solos. But be careful there are 2 videos on youtube and one of them has poor video quality.
The guitar solo at the end is a mixture of pedals.... And No, there is no post production on these videos.. It is all effects and direct form the mixing board... I have been in the room when they are playing this and it was ALL there... Loving your falling down the PT rabbit hole... Please Keep on Going...!!
The acoustic sound comes from John Wesley's guitar, it's I believe a PRS Hollowbody II in this song with a piezo pickup. The guitar has two outputs (a separate one for the piezo) and he usually runs them through different channels making it sound like 2 guitars. If you watch him closely this effect is much more clear in their song The Sound of Muzak from the Rockpalast '05 show so I recommend that for a video. Also the effect Steven uses at the end is just him rolling on and off a volume pedal.
And by the following album tour for Fear Of A Blank Planet when stuff got heavier, Wes had a 2007 Singlecut Trem prototype model with piezo, the first solidbody PRS with piezo built in and what eventually led to things like the P22 model. There's a nice blog video on the PRS channel about it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kXSKUmO9ofM.html
@@guitarandy2406 That's one of my absolute favorite videos. Another great one is this vid of him going through his rig on gigrig, his tones are incredible ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LNixNq8B9-w.html
When I listened to it the first time (album version though) I told the friend that had recommended it "these boys heard early Dream Theater and understood their assignment" in not so many words. I'm fairly certain they've got enough processing power overall that an acoustic simulator is fairly easy. My ears want to say he's playing stereo, too, though I guess with enough high end effects you might be able to have a wet and dry mix sound from one output.
Oh, and based on the video effects, I'm going to say there's a bit of post processing, but that being said, not a whole lot of it. Probably just to work out kinks of the specific room, really. Because they're like Rush in the sense of they strive to have as little variation from live to album. I've only seen em once, but the only other band besides Rush I ever heard get as close to doing that was Porcupine Tree. And Muse, but they needed like a whole little "hidden" band for all the extra instrumentation, which is still dedication to that idea but it just impresses me more when it's just the advertised band managing it.
Given your comments so far, I would suggest a PT instrumental called "Wedding Nails", live from Tilburg -> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fr1z4wnVKlw.html
