When Roland Joffé required Ennio Morricone to compose the soundtrack of Mission, Ennio wanted to see the movie. After he watched the entire movie he refused to write the soundtrack because, as he said, "this film doesn't need music, it is just perfect". Roland Joffé made all efforts to convince Ennio Morricone, and finally he decided to write this masterpiece. Life is strange some time.

Everyone pay attention to the music in a movie, to every music of every composer. Music is very very important in a movie (there isn't Cinema without Music, there was a cinema without scripts, without visual effects, without costumes, withou scenography, without acting, without editing... but movies have always had music since the first movie, when films had no sound and a musician played live). Have you ever tried to watch a movie without music?

Morricone said that the soundtrack for the film Mission was his personal favourite one, he claimed it was the soundtrack where he put most of his emotions, feelings and faith.... that is why he was terribly disappointed when it got snubbed by the Academy.

Morricone, before he died at 92 years old, wrote a letter from the ospital to his family. A letter that he told him friend to publish on all italian most popular newspaper. That's the letter: "I'm dead. This is how I announce it to all the friends who have always been close to me and also to those who are a little distant, whom I greet with great affection. Impossible to name them all. But a particular memory is for Peppuccio and Roberta, fraternal friends very present in these last years of our life. There is only one reason that drives me to greet everyone like this and to have a private funeral: I do not want to disturb. I greet with great affection Ines, Laura, Sara, Enzo and Norbert, for sharing most of my life with me and my family. I want to remember with love my sisters Adriana, Maria, Franca and their loved ones and let them know how much I loved them. A full, intense and profound greeting to my children Marco, Alessandra, Andrea, Giovanni, my daughter-in-law Monica, and to my grandchildren Francesca, Valentina, Francesco and Luca. I hope they understand how much I loved them. Lastly Maria (but not last). I renew to her the extraordinary love that has kept us together and that I am sorry to abandon. To you the most painful farewell." Ennio Morricone was a great person. Really. And to his funeral we wanted "Gabriel's oboe" to be played, his favourite from all his composions.

Oh my, I’m the “ guilty” for this reaction. So much to say but will be better for you read how classical orchestra is composed if you want by our own. The musicians are professors, they study years and years and the solo is played by first of each instrument. There is a very hard selection to be first violin, oboe ( the one she plays), flaute, ect. Each place belongs to this order, from the first to second and on for each instrument. I forgot to ask do not stop during the oboe’s solo. Is mistic.. is a challenge for who plays. The first oboe is korean and she is unforgettable. This composition is the one that Morricone was more proud of, a mix of classic, ethnic and holy music. He deserve to win the Oscar. The choir seems one but are two! Just to give an idea of the complexity. I use to sing in a symphonic choir too. I had the privilege to see two of the Morricone’s concert in my city, Florence. Is funny that an english name you’ve read Flore’. 😂😂. Thank you👍

As Metalhead you should know that Iron Maiden (just to mention one of them) have been inspired by Morricone to create their famous riff in 6/8 with melodies that we call "ride". It's called like that because Morricone uses that tempo and bass guitar to simulate the horse ride in the spaghetti western. Just to say how connected music is, regardless if you are listening to metal or classic music.

I had the IMMENSE pleasure and honour to listen to Mission and an original work (LIVE) he did specifically for that occasion which was: he was invited to come to my university in Milan where he got an honorary degree - for that occasion he wanted to bring an original work, he wrote the music for that special day (I remember thinking 'how humble of him to do that for us!' ) and when he got on stage he said "out of all the awards I received, this one takes place on the centre" and he was visibly moved. That day was so special. I think I cried. It was my first year of university and THAT happened. Man, I'll never get this lucky again, it's not usually my thing. Anyway, sorry for the long comment. Peace. ✌️❤️

It's Maw-ree-co-na 😊 He's the master ❤️❤️❤️ So glad you started this journey. I'm German, but I discovered the variety and beauty of the Italian music scene as a teenager and it's made my life so much more beautiful. My grandmother was a professional musician, playing the harp and her husband was a pianist. To do that job one from a young age plays usually more than one instrument and then joins a conservatory and studies music. It's something like university for musical professions. You have to practice every day many hours do do that for a living. My grandmother said,if for two days she didn't practice, the audience would notice.

Just to mention two more things: You're a beautiful soul and when you'll be through with Italian music in some years or curious to see also something from other countries, let me recommend Greek musicians. The country is small and the artists usually only sing in Greek,so they are not known outside Greece, but I'm sure you'll appreciate it. If you want to give it a try, start with the great Mitropanos singing "Thes"

Yep in the symphony every instrument, if there is more than one, has a goat. It’s called first chair. Some people have only heard of the first chair first violin who is also known as the concertmaster. First chair of the first violins is like the conductor’s no.2 like a sheriffs deputy. But everything from the cellos to the French horns to the flutes to the bassoons all have a first chair. They head up their section, take most solos and don’t turn their own pages, so they don’t have to miss any notes. I’ve been first chair on the double bass for a few years and it’s a like a mix of proud of your placement and kind of nerve wracking like being a middle management.

WIKIPEDIA- Ennio Morricone (10 November 1928 - 6 July 2020) was an Italian composer, orchestrator, conductor, and trumpeter who wrote music in a wide range of styles. With more than 400 scores for cinema and television, as well as more than 100 classical works, Morricone is widely considered one of the most prolific and greatest film composers of all time. The soundtrack for the film was very well received amongst critics, being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score and earning Morricone the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.
