Makes sense. The song resonates with frank. Replace some words in the song and you get Frank's reasoning for being the punisher. Replace the landmine with the criminal gangs and cia plus billy Russo. Replace the soldiers limbs with Frank's family and this song describes the punisher story pretty much entirely. Frank like the soldier feels trapped and stuck in a situation where he isn't living and dying is something that he is ok with. I wonder if marvel based Frank's origin on this song. Or did the punisher come before this.

This song was actually based off a WWII novel called Johnny Got His Gun. I read it in 8th grade randomly, not knowing at the time. This is their interpretation of the story in song form. IT's about a WWII pilot shot down who loses all his abilities to communicate with the outside world. The story is narrated by his mind's inner thoughts and inner monologue.

I have loved this song a since I was a teen, the official video is amazing! As a mom of two sons, my worst fear was the idea of them being soldiers. I started playing this song for them young. Showed the video to my oldest son when he was about six. He was curious enough to want to see the movie. Johnny Got His Gun. Awesome. When it was over I asked him if he maybe wanted to join the military when he was older. "No! I don't want to be a body bag." It really stuck with him and he isn't away at war. He didn't join the military, but he did see Metallica in concert last year 😎That's a win! He was so excited, "They played One." Grinning from ear to ear.

I'm sure someone has said thisaalready, but if not, here goes. This song is based on a novel titled "Johnny got his gun" with only a few minor details changed in the lyrics. In the book it was an artillery shell not a landmine. But it was set during WW1 where medical advancements hadn't been made yet and the docs were keeping him alive just to see if they could.

I'm so glad that someone finally reacted to the song with the lyrics and not that distracting video that, for what I have seen in other reaction videos before, it makes them lose the whole point which is appreciating music, and they start commenting about the video and it seems like the movie clips in the video take much more importance than the song itself since the music seems to fade down a bit in order for the movie clip to overcome the sound of the song, I'm not saying is not important, since the song is based on that movie, but it seems to me they didn't give the song the credit it deserved and keep in mind that this was Metallica's first video ever.

@@Ranganation umm... no.. The video Metallica made for this is based off the book "Johnny Got His Gun", that came out in 1939, in which a film adaptation of the book was made 1971, directed by the guy that wrote the book. One is based off of events in the book and the condition of Joe, the main character in the book.
@athlonen
@athlonen 5 лет назад
@Salvador Dalí You are right, they did buy the rights to the movie, but not for the music video. It was licensed by Trumbo to Metallica for a bit, especially so they could show those clips while they played it live. But when that licensing term came to an end, instead of reupping on the licensing, then Metallica bought the entire rights to it. But no, the rights weren't bought to use during the video; the author still owned it at that time.

All the poor soldier who gave to democracy was left as man who has nothing left but his brain's capacity to think. He's stuck . He can't express to anyone that he just wants to die a hero, but Instead, his "life" is the cage of his own personal hell as long as he lives. The only way to communicate is by morse-code. The concept of this song was taken from a movie called "Johnny, Get Your Gun". The official music video is so haunting. Watch it. It's message is as real as real gets.

Since you now have the background on this song and how it came about, as a veteran (thank you for the service, BTW) think of how you reacted with Disposable Heroes. This would be something like an epilogue from that, while dealing with what happened to the kid that was sent Back To The Front. Very nightmarish, indeed. @mrs.siffles1746
@mrs.siffles1746 5 лет назад
The music video “One,” which includes the band members playing their song as well as movie clips from Johnny Got His Gun, is strongly based on the idea of war and isolation from the world. This leads us to the main point of this music video, which is to represent the negative physical and emotional effect of a war on the soldiers through visual and lyrical elements of the song. However, the band does not try to turn people completely against war; they want to give their audience a more realistic perspective on how war really looks like. Metallica uses the motif of imprisonment, anaphora, and visual imagery to create ethos, pathos, and minor elements of logos to provide an appropriate image of war to clearly carry their message. “Landmine/Has taken my sight/Taken my speech/Taken my hearing/Taken my arms/Taken my legs/Taken my soul/Left me with life in hell.” Metallica uses anaphora with the representation of word “taken,” to again create strong emotions and sympathy among the audience for the American soldier. The repeated word emphasizes that all these elements which made him who he was, were “taken” away. He did not willingly give them away; he was forcefully striped from them during the battle and later by the doctors. This fragment of the song portrays the man in the hospital bed as a completely victim of the war since the word “taken” does not imply any agency. The use of anaphora in this context activated logos among the audience, since Metallica makes a logical argument of Joe being a victim in their last stanza. Also, in the last line, Metallica uses the image of hell simply because of the broad understanding of the word and the impression of suffering it has. Thanks to many religions and folkloric traditions, the audience is familiar with the contrasting ideas of hell and heaven. Heaven is a place everyone wants to get to and be simply happy in their afterlife and hell is a place in which people spend their eternity is a state of torment and punishment. “One” uses this general knowledge to emphasize the level of Joe’s misery; he is in his personal hell even while he is still alive. This powerful image created by the visual and lyrical elements of “One” creates again sympathy and pity (pathos) for the main character even while it uses logic to help the listener understand the soldier’s situation. The band wants to create a strong connection between their piece and the audience, so the viewer/listeners will more likely accept the dark and negative side of the war that is so often forgot by the media like TV and advertisements....and the story continues in more depth.... That's what I found about the song. All I know is that song LiVE and in person is an experience I'll never forget! BadA!

Check out the book or the movie "Johnny Got His Gun." That's what this song is based on. And having all of that taken away from him is only the beginning of his troubles. And learn about the guy that wrote the book/did the screenplay, Dalton Trumbo. Dude fought the Republican commie-seekers after WWII. Got blacklisted from Hollywood, but kept working under pseudonyms. "Johnny Got His Gun" (the book) was banned during WWII because it "anti-war" (i.e. brought the ugly realities to light). I think the movie was made in the 50's. maybe youre confusing it for the intro to battery which sounds kind of the same, melody wise, and they used that song in project X towards the end, in the scene with the flamethrower guy

The song is based on the movie called Johnny got his gun. Watch the movie or watch the actual video that was produced.

I'm glad you did this version first and not the official music video. The Video is very well done, but for a first time listener, it might distract from the music, and story a bit. I would watch it now though on your own time to get more out of the story behind the lyrics. Edit: Yes I realize I am commenting really late, but still lol.

I kinda wish you reacted to the music video. You should react to it. They do, do something different to help to understand the meaning of the song in my opinion

Great reactions! Please check out Stevie Ray Vaughn, you will not regret it (unless you wait). Always choose the live version and start at Texas Floods. Remember the first time you heard Chris Stapleton, yeah...like that but different. His guitar is like Eminem’s bars.
