I just love it when Kirk is like "don't make fun of me man, I don't know anything about Raiders" and throughout the whole thing he's just happy to be playing and it just cracks me up when he comes out of the bus, shouting "Raiders! Raiders" like he doesn't much care but just trying to support the gig. it's excellent.
kirks hilarious, always has been....especialy when he trys to sing ha....im in bham uk, i went to see megadeth once, anyways i turn around and kirk is just there...i had to look twice, he was just randomly in crowd drinkin a beer.
Bob seems to catch a lot of shit, but in regards to his complete lack of ego when it comes to being recognized as the person on the bass, that's enormous of him. Seems like a genuinely great dude.
Same thoughts, the internet makes these things seem so much bigger then they are I think. Seems like a honest dude who knows his own worth and doesn't need to steal anyone's thunder.
He is a complete scapegoat with fans and its a completely incorrect rewriting of history. Like he somehow wrote the black album. The entire black album was fully written and demoed before he came in. Apart from tempos thats the only thing he really inputted in. And St Anger aside, the black album, load, reload, garage inc and s and m is the best sound metallica ever had on records. People just shit on it because they dont like the tunes which is fair enough but he is an excellent producer. Also, st anger sounding the way it did is as much on the band as him. They all liked the snare and it was lars' initial idea to turn his snare off. Id personally like to see him back with Metallica.
He is a great dude and he was always on point in terms of sound and getting the best out of everybody in the band. And he was also the only person that could oppose the decisions of Lars and James and they listened when he lectured them on how a record should sound.
Tips for people trying to make a band work or survive in a band situation … Sometimes “because I like it” is reason enough to do something if it makes a band member happy and engaged.
Kirk: "You gotta be patient with me man. I don't know jack about any of this stuff." Two frames later. Kirk getting off the bus: "Raiders whoo, go Raiders...." Lmao. He fucking kills me.
I like Bob Rock. Great producer and seems like a genuinely nice guy. Metallica made their decisions on the material and Bob did what he could to facilitate them.
Damn it seems like Bob Rock is experienced in all sorts of crazy technical shit... Out of nowhere just comes up with the idea to mix the sound himself for the show
Not out of nowhere, the manager wanted Rob to play instead so that Bob could mix sound. Bob suggested prerecording the show before the game so that he could do both. I think they'd hired Rob at this point but were saving his first gig for the MTV thing.
When they were auditioning bass players, Lars said that Trujillo was the only one that looked like he wasn’t struggling. I’ve seen Bob play the material several times. Looks like he plays it with ease.
@Justin Christopher understood. Bob didn’t “fit” in the band. I wouldn’t want to see Bob in the band for that reason. It was more a comment that Bob is an amazing musician as well as producer.
Bob was a solid bass player but he doesn't have the insane ability that Rob has. I can't believe how many people don't realize quite how advanced Rob is technically, but the guy is, while perhaps lacking in personality compared to Cliff and Jason, the most consistently excellent bass player Metallica has had.
@@plasmakitten4261 Not trying to argue (too much) but I saw an interesting conversation between basically bob and Metallica. And Bob's point was that there are TONS of incredibly talented session players out there who can play the material with ease, but Metallica being a brand were looking for an image to go along with the bass player, and that is the reason Trujillo was settled on. I don't dispute that the guy is a great bass player, but he was chosen more for his image than just his raw bass playing ability.
@@SirPhilMcCrackinVonBeggington his image, age, and attitude fit the band. There's also the wanting to dedicate the rest of your life to Metallica thing, and I don't see much of the other players they auditioned actually following through on that
+Kevin N Yeah, its that the q-prime guy.the old geezer With grey beard?cant remember the name.sounds like a Dick.why do they have to ask anywways? he says its not a career move? ofc not,its just to get out there again.cheesus
I met Lars and Jerry Cantrell in a SF bar when all this was going on. I asked Lars, "Why not Joey Vera?"... he just did one of his "nnnntttgh.." What an imp lol
@@IronmanKMSA haha there's a whole load of history there, didn't he join anthrax at that point? I would have gone with Greg Christian or Steve Di Giorgio, but then testament is my fave of the bay area thrash bands.
@@damonwillis3672 Maybe he didn't want to support them when they moved to Vegas in 2019. I mean, Oakland is Bay Area, and lots of the old Raiders fans also are fans of the San Jose Sharks in hockey, who are the main rivals of the Vegas Golden Knights. Just a theory.
jesus Bob is selfless, not only is he filling on on the Bass while they look for a bassist, but he's also going to mix the recording in less than a day for them, not to mention all the peace keeping he did while they were shooting this while Lars (mostly) and James have gigantic egos, and Kirk seems like the child getting stuck in the middle of a divorce, picking his words VERY carefully so he doesn't start a fight.
And it's still funny to me that Bob is using that Spector bass that was used on all the Loverboy albums...Heavy Metal with an 80's pop sound. Too funny.
5:33 "This kind of music? We are the most successful rock band in the world motherfucker, this is not this kind of music, ok?" HAHAHA fuck he make me laugh
I interpreted, and the timeline of 2003 Metallica events backs it up, that at the point they were doing the Raiders parking lot gig Rob had already been hired or was at the top of the list of finalists. But, following their business plan for 2003 they weren’t ready to make a full announcement. The Raiders gig was very last minute and they had to do what they had to do without throwing their carefully laid “comeback” plans out of whack.
Oh dear.... I do NOT want to argue with Hetfield when he is in stubborn mode. This is a dude with strong will. The same qualities that make him great in Metallica, must be hell to deal with, behind the scenes.
During the bass auditions Lars is like the music is 10% over these guys capabilities. Bob Rock is playing these songs with ease. He was definitely the lost member of Metallica
James must be really glad he played this gig since to this day it's not just the last home playoff game for the Raiders, but their last playoff game period. Sorry, James. Long live the Tuck Rule.
@@CoffeeStain-Music Nope..fumble. Even with the tuck rule in effect…that particular play was still a fumble. Raiders got robbed…and I don’t even like the Raiders.
Instead of Phil Towle they should've hired Towelie from South Park to be their therapist. He'd of just handed them all a joint and told them to mellow out. Probably would've been cheaper too!
Can anyone remember that slower fat heavy song they were recording on this doco? Then their manager Cliff Burnstein jumped in and said not to put it on the album cause it was too slow. Man that was killer!! I wished they’d release it
Steve Phoenix,,,,,,, temptation ? There’s a few on here look up some kind of monster.Songs you’ll see ones with black background pics with all there album symbols ( cross, ride lightning chair. Snake from black lp. ) Their all put together on a black background . I seen them just looking up skom....
@Andy Salter yeah the guitar was endorsed to him for that event to advertise for the raiders game taking place that day. Other than that show me one video outside of the one time event they did to promote themselves and let the hometown fans know they're in the works of making another album. Which shortly after this event is when they picked up Rob to play bass. But if you can prove me wrong and share a video where it shows James sporting anything Oakland... I'll wait. I could be wrong? But I don't think I am, 'cause I have been listening/following Metallica for 30yrs and I have never seen him wear any raiders gear. Let alone ever hear him talk about anything to do with football let alone the raiders, aside from this one time event they did!
@Andy Salter I don't care really, I was just making conversation and wanted to prove my point that he isn't a diehard fan like he had claimed. Now Kerry King on the other hand is a true dedicated diehard raiders fan and you'll see Kerry sport his teams gear and favorite players jersey during football season when he is performing live in concert!
Bob never gets enough credit. Brought them out of the 80’s and turned them into the biggest metal band on the planet. Then held them together through the absolute cringe fest of them being uninspired while making St. Anger. Now they have a producer who is the most YES MAN they could get. Fidelman’s production sucks
