Artist: Metallica
Release: Unknown Rare 'Riff' Tape (1982?) [Lossless]
Genre: Speed/Thrash Metal
Country: USA
Bitrate: VBR (flac)
----------
Credit goes to username 'mediaaddict' from Guitars101, here's what he wrote about this tape :
I have to be a bit vague, but there's a bit of a story behind this tape. Karl Lundmark, who you know as one of the tapers I've done many transfers of recently, once went to Ron McGovney (Metallica's original bassist)'s house and made DAT tapes of many of his cassettes. How he pulled this off I'm not certain, but Karl had money from childhood, and that opens doors. The Old Waldorf show from October 18, 1982 is one of the tapes he copied, but the master of that is circulating, and I will not be uploading a version of this.
He did make a cassette of that show, though, and on the other side was this compilation of various riffs put together by the band, either as ideas for songs or for Ron to learn. I discovered this tape recently while cleaning out old storage space (also found my 1997 Buffalo DAT), and I offer this here uncut and with no tampering other than to level out the volume between the various clips and trim some silences between them.
Most of these riffs never got used, although I hear parts of Seek & Destroy, Whiplash and Ktulu, and there's a good chunk of a writing session for Ride the Lightning in here.
No tracklist, but I cut the tracks every time the tape was stopped and restarted.

Wow this rehearsal tape is absolute GOLD for Metallica and Megadeth fans. So many early Megadeth songs here and its very easy to see which riffs are Dave's and which riffs are James' on this entire tape.
@kartikchandrasekhar4181
@kartikchandrasekhar4181 4 года назад
Exactly. We know which riffs in Ride the Lightning Dave is responsible for. But it's important to note that Metallica wrote songs as a group - as Lars and Ron stated, they all wrote parts and tried to put them together like a puzzle. Which is why, while the Hetfield/Ulrich constant remains, you'd see the other names occasionally present if they came up with a riff or part in a song.

@kartikchandrasekhar2762

I don't get the mental gymnastics of some people. There's a riff in HEADCRUSHER by Megadeth that's a bit similar to one of the final riffs in SEEK AND DESTROY. Some allege that Dave wrote the riff in Seek, even though there's LITERALLY no proof and his name isn't featured on that song. James wrote riffs too. Dave's name is featured on songs he wrote riffs for, which is fair enough.
@ronpaul1082

Never heard anyone claim he wrote a seek riff . Especially not him . His problem is he brings a song to the band yet the writing credits go like this : Ulrich , Hetfield , Burton , Kirk , Kirks mom , James uncle , Lars dog .................. Page 2 .. Mustaine

Sorry for the incessant comments but I feel like I have to say this. I don't think this is just ONE rehearsal or jam session. I think it's a whole bunch of rehearsals and jam sessions recorded within the time frame of 1982-1983. Some of them are very likely just Lars and James working on some riffs and songs on their own. I ALSO have a hunch one of the sessions features Cliff (because I hear what sounds like distorted bass, very much a Cliff feature). Just my 2 cents.

What was a typical Metallica writing session like back then? Did you sit down together and work out songs like Lennon and McCartney? Or did people bring i different parts that you glued together until they worked? Lars: “Ha ha, I think we should leave Lennon and McCartney out of it. No, I’d definitely go more on the latter. It was more of a piecemeal thing. James had some ideas, I had some ideas, eventually Mustaine came in with some ideas. And then, yeah, we took those ideas and glued them together, added little things like picking technique, heavied it up and made it fast, put some energy and some youthful punkish enthusiasm behind it, and out came this Metallica thing.” Ron McGovney said the same thing to Chris Jericho too.

Well, I doubt it. It might be in his 'style' but all those guys were listening to the same kinda music and goofing around with the same kinda tone. Mustaine would often cozy up to Hetfield when it came to badmouthing others. Remember what he said about Dime and Vinnie in '94? It's very percussive in style, so it might be Hetfield or Mustaine. Who knows.

I'm pretty sure some of the riffs in Ride the Lightning (the song) are James's. He's the main songwriter and rhythm guitarist after all. Listening to this tape, it's obvious which riffs are Dave's.

Which is why he's credited. But I'm sure SOME riffs in that song are James's. Lars came up with the intro (Which Cliff added to). Dave wrote the main riff and the spider chord riff, not to mention the riff right after the chorus. Dave admitted not all the riffs in the song are his.

"I didn't write all of the music in 'Ride the Lightning.' Lars wrote the melodic intro, and then the next part I wrote and then the next part I wrote and then the next part and then it went back to his part and then it went back to my next three parts and then at that point ... who's keeping score? - Dave M.

Also, they wrote as a band. They all wrote parts and would decide which part went where.

Dave definitely came up with the spider chord riff as well as the riff over 'Someone help me.. oh please god help me.', as can be heard here. I'm sure James came up with the catchy riff over most of Kirk's solo (which is later transposed to F#). James is a solid riffer too. Dave has cowriting credits on songs that use riffs of his, of course.

Mustaine didn't invent that style of riffing.

Who the hell actually put together the riff for Fight Fire With Fire and Creeping Death? There's one guitarist leading the riffs and one coming in afterward. Mustaine put most of Ride the Lightning song together.

James for sure.

There are two guitarists there. At one point, Dave is leading and another point, James is.

It’s probably James riff with Dave’s input and influence. And to be honest I think that’s what the first two albums were Mustaine influence or written because everything after RTL isn’t written the same type of writing.
@kartikchandrasekhar4181

James for sure as those riffs are his.

Mustaine did not write Creeping Death or Fight Fire With Fire, so its safe to assume its Hetfield for the riffs & Cliff for the melodies and later Hammett with the catchy riffs that you don't see here. Mustaine wrote the foundational riffs on the title track of Ride The Lightning, but I believe unlike the songs on Kill Em All which he wrote every note of ( which means he arranged them as well the way it sounds on the demo and the album ), Dave only jammed the said riffs on Ride The Lightning and Lars probably arranged it in the end.

So this is gonna sound weird but that riff sounds exactly like the intro riff that’s played in the song Riot by three days grace. Give it a listen and you’ll hear it. Damn near exactly the same

WHAT WAS A TYPICAL METALLICA WRITING SESSION LIKE? DID YOU SIT DOWN TOGETHER AND BUILD SONGS FROM THE GROUND UP LIKE LENNON AND McCARTNEY, OR DID PEOPLE BRING IN DIFFERENT PARTS THAT YOU GLUED TOGETHER UNTIL THEY WORKED? LARS: “Ha ha, I think we should leave Lennon and McCartney out of it. No, I’d definitely go more on the latter. It was more of a piecemeal thing. James had some ideas, I had some ideas, eventually Mustaine came in with some ideas. And then, yeah, we took those ideas and glued them together, added little things like picking technique, heavied it up and made it fast, put some energy and some youthful punkish enthusiasm behind it, and out came this Metallica thing.”
