+Dave G You're probably right about that. Well, S&M was still an awesome consert and if I had the chance I would've gone to see it, to bad I was about 5 years old then.
I love Hetfield's voice throughout Metallica's career for different reasons. But there is something absolutely soaring and golden about his voice between about 1991-2000. It's the thing that THEN I didn't appreciate. I wanted more growl. Looking back now, he had amazing clarity and effortless range in his thirties.
I agree there were many times like this example here where he sounded great but there were other times he sounded like yodeling shit lol. This particular performance is a great example how good he was then. The only era I really don't like was like 2000-2005ish once they got around to doing the dm stuff in 2006 and on things picked up again lol. They was at a low low point in the 2000s. He doesn't sound bad on st anger album but the live stuff usually sucked from that era. The song st anger is good I like frantic other than the frantic tic tic tic part it's kind if annoying otherwise great song. It has good moments I'm not a big fan overall. Point being that era was their lowest and the 90s was among their best just behind the legendary 85-91 metallica
the clarity is why im so addicted to metallica having grown up with slipknot, lamb of god, suicide silence, august burns red... i got into a7x heavy after seeing them live.. originally i thought m shadows vocals were too clean as well. understanding and connecting to the lyrics/music makes it way heavier than growls and distortion could ever hope to.
Fact is, with a modern vocal coach James could have cultivated this latter approach while also being able to still BROOTZ withthe best of em. But in 1991, when he was losing his voice from years of unschooled "bad" screaming? I couldn't tell you if anyone had yet figured it out.
@@locotelocotfinding out Lars never rehearsed for concerts until recently is semi akin to finding out Brock Lesnar got the UFC belt without hard sparring. Imagine if Lars gave his all & was just obsessed. Fills arenas without trying! 😂
Holy shit! Love this cover and this gotta be one of their best live performances ever, man! Btw that eerie intro has always reminded me of the old Silent Hill games...
One of the better covers of an original song, the original being done by the NWOBHM band Holocaust sometime around that late 70's, maybe 1980. I've sort of drifted away from Metallica over the years, but I'll say they deserve respect for the way they treated the covers of their fave NWOBHM bands. It shows they truly respect their influences.
Excepted for Maiden with the horrible intro from "Run to the hills" I believe on "Garage Inc."... But I guess it was more of a joke than anything, so it's okay???
@@logikman329 they were way out of tune and just messing around in the studio and just happened to leave that on the final cut I thought that was quite obvious?
I miss Cliff! I was a senior in high school when he died in that tour bus accident. Because of Cliff, I got interested in the Cthulu mythos. Scary as shit, but really great!
I actually think he's hitting another peak period on the 72 Seasons album. He's got the perfect mix of growl and soul in his voice right now. With better production. His voice gets more of a God-like quality with a little reverb and occasional vocal harmonies.
I remember hearing this back before And Justice For All and fell in love with the ominious vibe of this song. Many people aren't aware it's about seances and contacting spirits from the other side awesome seeing them perform it live
Began my life as a metallica-head in the late 80s as a pre-teen, and Small Hours is still my come back song when I need some Metallica. All their hits and so much to love but the dark lyrics and passive start to excited anger is only bettered by One. Such a great song in the raw garage recordings!
Yeah I was around 15/ 16 when this came out. We all loved this record, the older ones too. But this had sort of a new fresh feel to it, didn’t realize the impact of Cliffs death back then like I do now🤘🏼 feel fortunate to know both bass players ‘eras’ if you will
@@bon6461 😄 damn malls always over charged ! I got mine at some record store in Denver , they had it playing over the PA. And I was like F*k n A who's that 😄 bought it and never looked back 🤘
Look hard at the darkness And you will see Just call my name and I'll be there You cannot touch me You would not dare I am the chill that's in the air And I try to get through to you In my own special way As the barriers crumble At the end of the day Dark rivers are flowing Back into the past You are the fish for which I cast And what of the future What is to be As the rivers flow into the sea And I try to get through to you In my own special way As the barriers crumble At the end of the day Do not take for granted Powers out there Don't step into the demon's lair Time is an illusion, Rising from time, Steep is the mountain which we climb. And I try to get through to you, In my own special way, As the barriers crumble, At the end of the day

Listened to this again, it's even better on mp3 just listening without the vid. Anybody obsessed with muh "first 4 albums" that can't appreciate this is an idiot. I played this through my amp on college football rivalry Saturday to a room and porch full of people, guys and girls, 20s and 30s, and all of these MGK types were like "holy shit who is this". I don't care what anybody says 96-98 Metallica was absolutely badass music
fuckin' right it was, it's like some people think once you make your name with a certain style and sound, that you're not allowed to play anything else. I've been in go-nowhere conversations with "fans" like that before, and about the only thing I concluded from it was they are thrash metal fans, and Metallica just so happened to play thrash in the 80's.
l learned to play this song like thirty-years ago, and never paid much attention to it after that. Funny thing is, I swear it was called _The Long Hours._
you dont like sad but true, my friend of misery, nothing else matters, king nothing, fuel, slither, whishey in the jar ?. i love the 90's and 80's stuff. not to mention that all most everything that metallica made is far better then the shit pop music we have today.

Yeaaah! :):D I love it /and miss it too! back in the days when Lars could perfectly played it !(not what is now..) awesome performance! :) Greets from Poland!:)
Sad but True is okay but it doesn't have the dynamics like their older stuff has. I agree that it is better than most pop out there today, and I realize that bands change after a while, but this is just my opinion. Some will agree and some won't. I still prefer older Metallica but I do respect the band for still being relevant in the music world.
Lars looks like he's trying to remind himself what to hit on the kit. Umm okay hit the snare then hit the bass drum then hit the um tom and then the cymbal. Now make a cool angry face to get the crowd excited. Lol
One of the few Metallica songs recorded after 1988 that I can still stomach, and yes, I know this was on the $5.98 ep. (only old skool fans know what that means.)
