Mary covered her face in hats and big glasses during that era because she didn’t want to be seen but had to perform. She was deeply depressed and drinking heavily. I think there was drug use. Her boyfriend (KC from Jodeci at that time I think) had cheated on her and abused her. She was heartbroken. Her record label was shafting her so she was broke after Whats the 411? album. The performances on the My Life album was so raw and resonated with so many because her pain was almost tangible and the longing for love was clear. If you look at her images from the 90s a good deal of hide her eyes.
Guys... LOVE your videos and reactions. It was PAINFUL watching you guys discuss the song and knowing that the version you were talking about was the Puff Daddy remix version with an entire Mary J Blige verse in the song and the more "upbeat" version of the track. Hope you will go back and have a listen sometime, especially because THAT version has a Biggie Smalls vocal in the track also and Jane would FLIP hearing that part since that she's such a fan. You can DEFINITELY tell why that version got so high on the charts AND won the Grammy, it's MUCH more of a pop song. I also know all the lyrics and am a huge fan of this song... Keep these coming, great series.
there are three versions.. this is the RZA version.. there is s the puffy version.. On Tical (method's debut album) there were two versions of this song on it (different from the Puffy version)..
I’d love to see a Flashback Friday for a rap/rock song years before Rage abd one of the first Buzz clips on MTV. Deeper Shade or Soul from Urban Dance Squad
Wait!!??? this is a different version than what I grew up with it.. I've heard about 3 different versions of this song, and yet I've never heard of this version.... What!!!?
Jane, to your point about Ex-factor and this song, R&B / neo-soul isn't very mainstream. I think it's easier for a rap song to climb the billboard charts. But I was pretty surprised it got to #3 in the 90s.
Hey my guy, i dont think you understand how huge Method Man was. He's a LEGEND. He just doesnt grind like he used to, so his name isnt thrown around as much as some of the other greats.
