So to be fair to Dread, Super Metroid did the same thing in the first half. After completing Brinstar, a door closes behind you completely preventing you from accessing the first 3rd of the map until you can get the wave beam, which comes a decent ways later. There's also things like tall shafts you fall down among other barriers that temporarily prevent players from backtracking.
Yeah I was about to comment the exact same thing, Dread actually I think doesn't do it as much, you are pretty free to back track, rarely required for main progression, but crucial for sequence breaking.
@@MrBanane50505 prime is in first person, so I understand the comparison making more sense, but I feel dread fits since it's been floating around for a similar amount of time as half-life 3. Honestly, both games are good comparisons.
@Rosma Salinez It's Metroid Dread for the Nintendo Switch. The phrase "Metroid for the Nintendo" would be more apt for the original Metroid if anything, but in actuality it is not truly fitting of that either, and would exclusively refer to the NES version.
@@omarcortes9958 via sequence breaking sure, but SM is designed around the player not getting wave until after they get grapple beam, meaning the one way gate in Brinstar stays one way until the half way point of the game
That part of the sequence break was planned by the developers, the reason why was to extend the way you can obtain diferent upgrades and be more replayable, unlike the mach ball or the glitches with the speedbooster, the wall jump was planned with that intention, that's why when you find the creatures on brinstar you can hear the jingle that plays when you get an upgrade. Sure the developer's planned an especific path but then again why bother with getting getting you to learn wall jumping in a path that you can only get out by using it?
@@omarcortes9958 And you don't find out about wall jumps until you've already gotten power bombs and are doing a second loop through Brinstar. Also the continuous wall jump which is needed to get wave beam early was likely not part of the plan since the animals teach you bouncing back and forth on a wall (which is how every Metroid after uses them). Using shinespark to skip grapple to go to ghostship early was likely a dev intended skip since there's no other reason for the forward shine spark to exist in game.
@@sanicboom6443 Nintendo owns Pokemon and publishes all their games. Nintendo didn't make Metroid Dread either, MercurySteam did. I guess Nintendo has no influence over what games they publish then?
People constantly talking about not having option of remapping buttons... u guys know u can do that on the switch right? and even save profiles for games so u dont have to change them everytime...
To me it's absolutely on par with Super Metroid being on the top of 2D Metroid games. It surpasses Zero Mission, Return of Samus/Samus Returns and Fusion BY FAR, absolutely no doubt about that
Don’t get me wrong, the game SHOULD have a button remap feature, but doesn’t the Switch have a system level button remap nowadays? So if any button felt wierdly mapped, it would’ve still technically been remappable.
Way to many spoilers ...What the %!^!! I was a a quarter of the way in and was like "why are you telling us these key storyline moments!? . I can't stand "reviews " like this. I stopped watching.
Literally EVERYONE i talked to said he/she didnt like the look / artstyle when watching the Trailers and found themselves later liking the Visuals a lot. I love the Game too, its just sooooo good.
Can’t wait not only to play it, but also to see what the speedrun community does with it. I still love to see runs on Super and Zero Mission, and hope this is as fun to sequence-break and master as those.
The people complaining about spoilers are absolutely ridiculous. You should know that there was gonna be gameplay spoilers in a 16 minute review and half the complaints are about stuff that was already in the trailers. What did you guys expect? What was he supposed to do, show the reveal trailer on loop for 16 minutes?
I've finished it i am so happy i got to play it. It has learned A LOT from its previous games and most importantly, they studied indies such as hollow knight and axiom verge so well, so i can safely say this game is infinitely superior to all other entries in the saga, and competes with super metroid for the n° 1
@@CodyHazelleMusic it’s because every other console has drastically higher FPS and resolution capabilities than the switch. I love my switch and many games on it but it’s pretty sad. They’d sell so much more if they put more effort into the hardware.
It’s not objectively better, films like spider verse intentionally have lower frame rates to replicate a comic book style yet remains smooth because our brains fill in the gaps
Nintendo needs to make sure Mercury Steam keeps making 2D Metroids in the future .... Amazing game, amazing experience. They even built in on purpose sequence breaks for players O_O Like there is a quick kill on Kraid's second phase if you get the bombs early ... You get shot into his pink hole and just bomb him to death.
I noticed that the EMMI have a similar body structure to Chozo's. Don't know why, because they were made by the Federation, which are humans, but it's a cool detail I noticed.
I mean, the only thing separating it from human form is height and it’s ability to crawl around into tight spaces which Adam let’s you know early on. Maybe there will be details to your suspicions in the game somewhere if you were in fact correct on your assumption of the Fed taking inspiration from previous encounters with the Chozo ruins.
You are a good writer and reviewer. It shines so much more on here vs where you used to be. Like if I didn't hear the voice, I'd assume it's a completely different person.
In Metroid, I kinda look at missile upgrades as Korok seeds in BoTW. You don’t have to get them all but it helps to get a lot of them. Although Metroid incentivizes collecting them all with that completion %.
This review taught me about the melee counter when the robot attacks you. I instinctively pressed X when the robot was about to kill me, so I missed the actual tutorial message.
Honest to dread is amazing from start to end. One i wish they didn't do was change the controls of the speed booster. It becomes a techincal chore when i can't do super technical shinespark moves because it's tied to holding down the LEFT stick. I feel like mapping pulse and cloak to d-pad and flash shift to a left stick hold would open up A for a run button to go into speed booster.
I Plan on Getting this for Christmas!!!! I Know about the lore from previous games due to Watching LPs of the games; but THIS will be my VERY First Official Licensed Metroid game that I've actually Played!!
I'm definitely picking up Metroid Dread, but it feels odd hearing Joey saying it could be better but you should still buy it. I'm getting mixed signals here lol
@@godofsin4604 Mixed? He loved the game and said to buy it. That doesn't sound mixed to me. I mean I could tear my favourite game to shreds and still tell people to buy it because I think it's fun so hey XD
“can it live to the expectations built up over 20 years” well frankly I thought this game got canceled 15 years ago or was an actual joke, so I have no expectations walking into this
It was originaly intended for the ds and even announced in some magazine but the ds could not run the game well so it was canceled. The developers even said that.
This game is easily top 3 in the series with Super Metroid and Prime its extremely good I cant wait for the next one whenever it comes. Hopefully its not as long
I am impressed what Mercury Steam did with the Metroid franchise. Metroid Dread has shown us how the Spanish studio has improved since their Castlevania Lords of Shadow Days.
Awaiting my pre-order copy to arrive. Then I will hunt down those amiibo in store somewhere. Metroid deserves the attention, and this work of art is totally worth the price tag. Support Metroid.
I have to ask. Can you use both the analog stick an dpad to move? I would like the control scheme to have it so that I could use the dpad for general movement, then use the left analog stick for free aiming. And using the right analog stick to switch aeon abilities
@@Nuka-Lucas the maker of the video is wrong. Go to system settings > controllers and sensors > button remapping and you can set the controls however you like. It think Metroid Dread might his first time playing on the Switch.
@@DS9TREK that doesn't do jack. You can swap the dpad and analog stick functions with that. And even if you could, that would be terrible for free aiming. That's why I'm asking for movement on both the dpad and analog stick like most 2d games
I just finished it. I highly disagree on the OST not being good. There are so many incredible pieces of music. And the sound effects from enemies are unique and interesting
This game is insane! Absolute Masterpiece! Just finished it! Best game of the switch with BOTW! I'll play it multiple times for sure. What a crazy experience! XD
Digital is midnight according to your account location, i will get it 6 hours before moat of the US because i live in sweden for example, japan amd australia gets it first.
Super metroid also prevent you back tracking until you collect Ice beam.. Many people forget that after you drop to lower brinstar ... You cannot go back..
Its definitely my favorite Metroid game which means it's the best 2d metroidvania game out there imo. Ori would be my second favorite game. Dread just looks and controls beautifully and it's so fun to play and explore. I love it and can't wait to play more everytime I'm away from it. Im going to sad once I beat it fully and its over. Hopefully they'll release some DLC for it.
I just read a write-up/review on Mashable, and I'm kinda worried I won't have fun with it :/ I know everyone's different, but they mentioned a lot of things I get really irritated by in certain games. Maybe I'm just not the target audience. Oh well, at least I'll still be contributing to its sales success. Still want to see the franchise succeed!
