Metroid Prime Remastered vs Original Graphics Comparison 

Exactly, it's a perfect effort.

That was my first thought when I saw the release trailer. I knew I needed to see a side-by-side comparison to see just how much better the remaster looked.

Came here to say the same thing... I'm just blown away at how different it looks yet feels so familiar. Especially for those who played this game for thousands of time back in the day and over the years.

Man I played the original game when it came out on game cube ...its like im playing a whole different game..it's beautiful how they took there time to remastered this game 👏 AMAZING 👏

Reminds me of the anniversary editions of Halo 1 and 2. I don't notice the upgrade until I switch it back to the original and remember how it really looked 😆

I never played the original but there are even moments that look better in the original, around 4:00 for example. Fantastic work from the devs.

@@SymmetricalDocking its funny you mention the shot at 4:00, because I was thinking myself that I liked how the original had the boss slightly shrouded in darkness, which was almost certainly done for tech limitations. But either this remaster is just incredible

@@SymmetricalDocking Fair point actually, I think the charge beam animations actually look better in the original but these are just small things. Overall though it looks fabulous and I can’t wait to play it again. Metroid Prime shows how to do a remaster compared with the debacle of the remastered versions of the classic GTA trilogy and Assassin’s Creed 3.

Isn't it? Especially with a good modern TV and a HDMI adapter for the GC. it scales very well for my old Sanyo and does well on nicer newer TV's as well.

They are not redone textures. There are entirely new models from the ground up. It seems they have literally remade this game from complete scratch to match feel of the original.

@@theblowupdollsmusic I feel like this is a test run of a new engine that they might use for Prime 4. It would make sense logically for them to do so, and by the gods, they even added the cannon effects back. They were missing in the Prime Trilogy version.

Remaster is short. There's no doubt, Metroid is great again.

@@luis-sophus-8227i believe that doubt has been settled since Dread. This remaster looks awesome though. To this day it’s still incredible the original Prime came out for the GameCube looking like a PS3 game and this remaster did it justice

God, I hope we get the other 2. I only ever played the first, but beat it probably 3 or 4 times on the GameCube, and never got around to the others. It's the one glaring hole in my Metroid collection, lol.

Dread was the top selling Metroid of all time so there’s a greater chance MPR will be a hit. As with anything that's not as popular as it should be, make sure you tell your friends to check it out.

If Prime 4 is released, Metroid is sure to be in its prime.

Charged beam aside, yep!... maybe they can patch the charged beam? Donno why they made it "blackish" ball... but still, Remastered is absolutely amazing!

Nintendo didn't make it, like the original it was produced by Retro Studios. Yes, they PUBLISHED it, and it's their IP, but they didn't develop it (if Nintendo had released a "remaster" it would look essentially the same, but with a higher output resolution, texture filtering, and would cost $60)

@@yellowblanka6058 I think I need to remind you that almost no remasters of mainline Nintendo games are made by Nintendo. I'm guessing you're talking about something like Skyward Sword HD? Developed by Tantalus, not Nintendo. Ocarina of TIme 3D? Grezzo.

This is really great too, but Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition is definitely their best remaster hands down from a visual and QoL perspective

The original was incredible for its time. The devs defied all expectations and delivered an instant classic. I still have my copy bought second hand from blockbuster video. Being able to see the steam and alien guts on your visor blew me away as a kid.

Yes! The original holds up so well! I remember being amazed at it as a kid, back when I first played the game. Never saw a game that looked that good before.

The textures in the remaster are unequivocally better but there are some aspects that I genuinely prefer in the original. For one, Samus looks a lot more cartoony in the remaster and a lot of the assets in the original feel darker, grittier, and more realistic despite the lower resolution and polygon count. Just from this video comparison, some aspects like the darker lighting in the parasite queen fight gives the original a more ominous and scary feel. The occlusion in the talon 4 overworld in the original makes the environment feel wet, humid, and more alien where in the remaster it feels more like earth. I found the same thing with Magmoor where it feels like a hot and stuffy alien boiler room in the original but more like a "bowser's castle" in the remaster. While playing through the remaster I'm finding that a lot of the new assets feel more cartoony and less alien which takes a bit away of the feel from the game. I know it's counter intuitive but something about the lower polygon count and darker grittier textures in the original makes the game feel more detailed because it requires you to add your own detail in your head whereas the remaster does all the work for you and the outcome is imo not quite in line with the feel of the original game. I do, however, really like the feel of the main open space of Phendrana in the remaster and the added detail to a lot of the bosses, especially Flaahgra.

call me old fashion but there are certain details that prime has then remastered. When Samus starts descending to the next planet there are clouds in the GC version but the REmastered version there aren't. I guess im a stickler for little stuff like that. Im going to purchase it regardless but Us Kid growing up in the simpler times 80s 90s embedded in our subconscious graphics like the before times is revolutionary. Call me old fashion! lol

​​​​​@@michalhelesic8971 they needed more rain and fog to compensate for weaker drawdistance and lower details because of gamecubes hardware limitations, now that there are much more detailed enviroments, they decrease snow and rain to enjoy the landscape more and to give the player a better overview , its the right decision. What bothers me personaly, is the fact that they removed the wall lightings from beam weapons, the shots dont reflect on the walls, ceilings and grounds anymore,... :(

@@AleX-hu7ci I’ve notice newer games doesn’t like Shadows for some reasons, I’ve played Crysis 2 og & Remastered, the Remastered have less dark shadow when the point is to use thermal vision if u can’t see clear in those dark areas

I know. I haven't played this game since Gamecube and I remembered that it looked very good. I saw the Remastered and I was like, mmm almost the same as I remembered. I was wrong.

Game so far is the exact same experience just with updated graphics. Pretty much exactly what a faithful remaster should be.

I saw quite a few people complain that this remastered version looks “literally the same” as the original. I think it’s a testament to just how good the OG looked on the GameCube’s hardware but this is definitely a massive upgrade.

They did actually, they lost the original source code, and had to remake the entire game from scratch!

It's a remake... but I think they wanted to cover their asses from setting expectations too high so they call it a remaster.

It's probably built off of what they've been working on for Prime 4. It's really great to see.

@@MedalionDS9 It's not. Remakes are built entirely from the ground up. This is still running on the original engine from what I can tell, just for gameplay. I imagine it's using a separate engine specifically for the visuals. The visuals are remade from the ground up, but the game itself is not. That makes it a remaster. It's actually the same way Halo CE and 2 were remastered.

@@MedalionDS9 it's not a remake for crying out loud. I seriously can't believe people to this day are still mistaking remaster as remake and vice versa. Everything between Prime Gamecube and Prime Switch plays the same with a few major modifications to the graphics. It just looks better on the switch and that's it.

When you talk about the remake of a game you start from the beginning and make everything new. This is not what happened here. Drawing some new textures is not a remake. They used the original code and ehanced or swaped the graphics.

Square Enix should take note.

@SatanicSexGod you don't know what a remake is lol. It's cool though. But you don't get new lighting, new/changed effects, new shadows, or increased poly count is a remaster. Some elements have been remade and added so it's much closer to a remake than a remaster. Kinda like the xenoblade one port to switch where character models and assets were made better

Improved is an understatement. They completely made the game from the ground up, no wonder it took so long. These are new assets.

Yeah, that's really my biggest gripe with this remaster, I vastly prefer the old UI. It just had more personality.

Glad I'm not the only one. The OG menus give me Area 51 vibes which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Don't be too glad. Sometimes it's an opportunity to do the bare minimum for maximum profit. Most remasters are anything but a remaster, just an upscale in resolution. Be grateful for the good remasters while quietly hoping developers honour previous games by building from them and making new, quality content for us to love.

Yes but unlike crisis core, metroid prime has aged pretty well. Crisis core on the other hand has a relatively poor gameplay, filled with a Lot of secondary missions that are too repetitive justo to extent artificially the duration of the Game!

I get what you’re saying but “finally” is a bit dramatic if you’re referring to remasters/remakes. OOT 3D, Majora’s mask 3D, WindWaker HD, Link’s Awakening, MK8 Deluxe, just off the top of my head are remakes that were done justice. The upscaling of titles like Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword were some bs though. Hopefully they stop with those type of cash grabs.

I'll always prefer the original, but this is the first remaster I can think of in recent memory that I have no reservations about wanting to buy. That's the reason I never picked up the wii version - it was missing little things like the gunsmoke after spamming the power beam, the ice buildup when charging the ice beam - little, important things like that. But this version looks like the complete package. I'm excited.

The menus look so sterile, they missed out on making it feel like the visor

It's a remaster and the best kind, just like what they did to call of duty and Xenoblade Chronicles; redoing the graphics and adding quality of life changes.

It's definitely just a remaster, but it's done the same way Halo's remasters were done, using the original engine for gameplay and a new engine for the visuals.

its not. Its more of a really, really well done remaster. They didnt remake anything except the superficial paint, that they use as a base for the new one (and not reimagined)

@@smoothbanana That's the way it is for all systems that came out before HDMI... they were made with CRTs in mind, and they could get away with jagged pixels because the CRTs would smooth them out. The Gamecube and PS2 (and the Wii, too somewhat) is in that unfortunate in-between the old pixel-based graphics of the 16 bit era and the new HDMI HD era. The 8 and 16 bit games had visible pixels even on a CRT so it's not that much of a shock when you load one up on modern hardware, but yet the PS2 and some Gamecube games will look terrible because they relied upon the CRT smoothing effect in that era. Thankfully, SCART cables and SCART to HDMI boxes are a thing to mitigate this some (they look way better than using AV cables on LCD TVs!) but even that will only take you so far. I'm glad they're doing this, and I hope the GC version Twilight Princess is next after the other two Prime games; I only played the Wii version and everybody says the GC version is better (I didn't really like the aim controls TBH, I think a lock-on like Ocarina would be better).

And the funny thing is, if you squint carefully at the original footage, you CAN see pirates floating in space but they're very JPEGish so it was easy to think of them as just space debris. It was until this comparison that it finally clicked they were supposed to be corpses!

The GameCube wasn’t cool lol when i was younger it was ps2 and Xbox but the switch is definitely a cool console

@@ot9523 you've been misled then. It was arguably the most powerful console (graphically). Only reason I prefer PS2 is because it has more titles. Xbox was strong but didn't have enough great games like gamecube

@@ot9523 I was a gamecube guy and never had the xbox or ps2. Friends always came over to play smash and mario party and super mario strikers lol. I even took it to college in 2014 and it was still a huge hit

If you weren't playing melee and double Dash with your friends in HS and even college you weren't living. I had a PS2 and GC and GC games just hit different. PS2 wished it could play Metroid. Not to mention Wind Waker blew my brain away being my first game.

This and Resident Evil 4 made me feel the same way.

Guys, you're not crazy. It did look better on a CRT than what you're shown here. (Graphics that were made for CRTs only look good on CRTs. If you want to see examples, I suggest this incredible video called "The 30 Most Mind-Blowing Games Examples of Retro Pixel Art" by Wobbling Pixels. There are no Gamecube examples, but you'll get the idea with the PSX and N64 ones.)

How do you switch beams while using modern fps style controls ? Do you hold a trigger button while moving one of the sticks ? Just curious how that works

Kids these days have no idea what a revolutionary leap in graphics N64 to GameCube was... the fact that GameCube games can be simply upressed and still look amazing today speaks to their quality

I'd say it borders the line. It almost looks like it was completely redone from scratch.

Hope to see more inspiration from Doom in Prime 4. Agility improvements for Samus, and maybe quick weapon switching etc.. I don't remember if shine sparking was a thing in Prime 3. But wonder what they could do with it.

@@stringtales There’s absolutely no way Nintendo would release a fresh off the factory line AAA for 39.99 unless they did not need to make back their ROI. I imagine the rumors about this being shelved for years were true, and they’re just now starting to put it out to create a timeline for the MP4 release. I bet they’ve worked on nothing but MP4 for the last 4 years.
