You know, I think Metroid Prime did the whole "learn about the story through your environment" thing long before Dark Souls did. And also yes, I too will never tire of that Phendrana drifts track. Never ever.
Allied assault schmerzen forest, Sonic adventure ice cap, Melee icicle mountain, Perfect dark crash site, Nightfires first real level, they're all so good.
8:49 I remember there being a data log you can access from inside a space pirate base that describes how multiple space pirates were horrifically mutilated while testing out the morph ball on themselves.
I loved scouring the areas looking for those! To this day I have only played the first Prime. I should get myself a cheap Wii and play the trilogy. I have a GC and MP but I really want to try out the new controls on the Wii.
@@leegsyYou could use a emulator to play it. The PC I use is a budget build from several years ago and if I optimize it, then it will run 60fps. I would recommend a GameCube controller adapter for PC, I got one off of Amazon for 15$.
@@user-cz9rq5cp4i You can get the Trilogy and use a USB Wii sensor bar on the PC as well, but then again, you can change the controls ingame and in Dolphin's settings to be more like a PC game.
Seeing and hearing people still speak highly of Metroid Prime warms my heart. I will never forget that moment when arriving at Tallon IV after the escape sequece of the frigate for the first time, I started to notice a distinct sound in the background that filled my curiosity bar...... It was a remixed tune of Brinstar from the NES Metroid..... A tidal wave of nostalgia hit me so hard as I recognised the tune immediately. I stood there for a few minutes in awe appreciating the tune while taking in the atmosphere and grasping how amazing it was to look up to the sky while watching rain drops fall onto Samus' visor. It was bliss. One of my most cherised gaming memories.
@@نونيم-ي4ح nah, metroid sells nowhere near as much as zelda or mario. All three franchises are as old as each other yet there are single mario or zelda games that have outsold the entire metroid franchise
There is a rumor that they've had a port finished for the trilogy for months. They are just holding off on it until we get closer to MP4 release so they can use it as part of marketing.
I got impatient and bought a wii u (they can play all original wii games) I don't regret it in the slightest. Using the wiimote plus and nunchuck feels unique and helps break up manoughtony if you game a lot.
I replayed the entire trilogy recently and damn, I soaked those games up even though I've played through all of them multiple times as a kid. They are just timeless classics and I don't think there will ever be a point where the games will just be ugly and unenjoyable.
From what I've heard and read, a lot of Metroid fans did not think like you and thought very differently. A lot of the fanbase was worried that it would turn into another FPS and trying to cash in on the Halo craze so much so that the first showing of the MP trailer was booed massively. When the game came out everyone was so surprised that the game is so excellent that for a lot of reviewers, it was their favorite game of the year and probably of all time. It surprised me to read all of this since I love the game so much, and reading that people were fearful and nervous of MP being a bad FPS puzzled me as well.
@Christopher Simon I've only read about this since I had dial-up Internet (didn't know of gaming forums and of E3/etc.) and no cable/satellite TV in the early 2000s. When MP got revealed at E3 2001, there was a serious amount of booing of it (I can understand why when seeing the first trailer) and it was designed as a 3rd person shooter ala Other M. A serious amount of people in forums thought Ninty was cashing in on the craze of Halo 1, Quake, Doom, etc. and ruining Metroid by making it a FPS (though it's more accurate to say first person adventure with shooting).
When it got released, everyone was extremely surprised at how amazing of a game it is and didn't take any big trendy FPS elements of the time. People took back the bad stuff they said about Metroid Prime and replaced it holy praise when they got to play it. Gggman showed it really impressively (for any and all games) ranks in in the Top 15 Best Rated Metacritic Games by Metascore and Userscore of All Time.
@@revolverswitch metroid dread is gonna be amazing and i couldn't be more excited. a little worried about halo infinite but cautiously optimistic though. the thing is mercurysteam has shown themselves to be competent with their handling of past games when given the right direction, and understands the material of the franchise they're making really well, and 343 can't exactly say the same
"I'm colorblind as well". I know it doesn't make for an enjoyable video experience, but Ishiruka Dolphin has a colorblind filter to make those guys less of a pain.
Smurfman256, I wonder if GMan isn’t aware that power bombs are their one true kryptonite, as it kills them instantly. Comes in REAL handy when you fight the Metroid Prime Phase 2 as I was able to defeat him and only took 2 hits out of the whole fight playing the Wii version, without the Fission Metroids being that much an issue.
RabidChasebot, Like I said before man, hunt for and stock up on powerbombs and you can kill them easily. There’s only 3 places you can encounter them, In the Phazon Mines Metroid tunnel (sorry I can’t remember the exact name), the place where you fought the Omega Pirate (after you kill it), and the Impact Crater, which is where you’ll encounter them the most. Color doesn’t really matter when you have an insta-kill you can take advantage of.
@@RokushoTheRavager I mean he was at zero power bombs during the clip where he was swarmed with the things. I remember getting all the ones I could find as a kid and still being screwed.
Dogman_35, Well I mean it’s been several years since I played it, but IIRC you can have up to 12 power bombs in total, at least 10 which is more than enough and even though power bomb ammo is bit more uncommon than missiles & energy, you still get a decent dose when you run low.
The amount of thought that went into the lore and scannable items is amazing. Detailed images of enemies and their anatomy and the writing that went into their scans was so cool to me. Made it seem so believable. The dev team must have had researched so much actual biological and physiological things for inspiration. I forgot what it's called but the codex where all your scans are saved for future reference is simply gold. That, plus all the great little details made this game so enjoyable and never feel stale or boring. PS, another cool detail: when you rapid fire the power beam for more than about 5 seconds and then stop, you see haze come off the tip of the blaster from the heat of firing so many shots in rapid succession. Brilliant.
They did the same thing for Prime 2 as well where you end up fighting extradimensional horrors and whatnot. This game really does immersion well that I could play for hours and not even realize it.
@@vcdonovan5943 Nothing in the chronology suggests Link can't be female. I guess at this point they only do it for tradition's sake, because there really isn't another good reason.
One of the big things that I can agree with Miyamoto was that he did not like MP being called a first person shooter game. He instead wanted it to be called a first person adventure game (with shooter elements) and I think that's one of the key things to have for a very successful first person Metroid game.
I've played a lot of Metroid Prime 1 & 2 and I must say Destiny scratched that itch a little for me, in a weird kind of way. (Mostly the atmosphere and enemies. The meta gameplay is very different.)
One of the best of all time without a doubt, the atmosphere and music give such a deep impression of exploring this decrepit, crumbling, lost civilization that genuinely scared me back in the day, I still remember getting both metroid fusion and prime for Christmas and being scared of the chozo ghosts in prime and shutting off my gameboy when SA-X came into the room, good times.
God, the SA-X and going into the Phazon Mines dude. Scared the shit out of me as a kid, especially with the music really adding to the atmosphere as well.
I Have very fond memories of this game when I was a kid. I remember vividly getting stuck near the end of the game and couldn't figure out what to do and eventually my older brother's friend came over one day and beat the game for me. I remember being so shocked when Samus removed her helmet at the end of the game and finding out she was a girl.
This game makes 3D Graphics interesting, one of the few franchise on the 3D Transition Era that holds up even today. All Areas are detailed and colorfull
With The Morph Ball, I'm pretty sure if you look at the animation closely, her body turns into some kind of energy when the ball is formed. Though, there is a space pirate log documenting their attempt to copy the Morph Ball and it results in the test subject being turned into a tangled, dead mess.
I've never been more satisfied with a game than Metroid Prime. I just sat there for half an hour afterward gobsmacked by how engaging it was. Absolute masterpiece. This, Super Mario Galaxy and RE 4 made the WII into one of my most loved game consoles.
I LOVE Metroid Prime so much. I remember going to Wal-Mart back in 2002 and seeing the demo for this game on the Gamecube. As soon as I started playing I was totally hooked and I started to beg my parents for a Gamecube and Metroid Prime. Fortunately I must have begged hard enough because 17 years later I still have that Gamecube and Metroid Prime and still pop it in occasionally and enjoy the hell out of it. Easily one of my top ten favorite games of all time.
I listen to the soundtrack still to this day. Plus i love the detail in the Prime games. Everything has data files and information. Even if it is only a single line but its still awesome. Also now after watching the video i want to play it for the 150th time. Guess ill have to boot up dolphin again.
List of tracks of Metroid Prime that I personally go back and listen to from time to time: 1- Phendrana Drifts (obviously) 2- Both Tallon Overworld themes 1 and 2 3- Underwater Frigate 4- Artifact Temple 5- Ice chapel 6- The intro, menu and credits theme.
Something really cool about the soundtrack of this game, and the other primes aswell, the original metroid's soundtrack was supposed to be filled with songs that "sounded like an alien creature." The prime games did this perfectly. You will hear sound effects in some of the songs that sound like something the boss or the environment should make. In prime 2 there is a boss called Quadraxis, a big robot, and his battle theme begins with an electronic synth noise while the rythm sounds like metal banging against each other. Stuff like that is prevalent throughout the entire trilogys soundtrack.
Yeah. I agree. I like how every Prime games soundtrack represents the events that currently durimg the adventure that feels realistic & fits perfectly into the mixed.
Thank you for covering the very first game that I ever got to explore on my own having a GameCube console to myself, I remember watching my older brother play Everything and I was just there for the ride watching and experiencing button Metroid Prime was the very first game that I got for myself and for me to explore enter experience everything firsthand this brings back so many memories thank you
My mother was deployed to Kuwait in 2003 and it was a very rough time. But I had Metroid Prime! That, a good friend and great father really helped. I will forever have memories of that moment of my life with this included in it.
This game is without question the best transition from 2D to 3D ever made. Even better than Ocarina. A true masterpiece that neither of its sequels could surpass. Great video.
Booski. I guess. But still. But now, Zelda: Breath of the Wild & Super Mario Odyssey are now aging way better than what Mario 64 & Ocarina of Time use to be since there the spiritual successors.
@UC13U0rYa4JtgfnsH35xo7dA kinda disagree on Odyssey. It's a great game at its heart but it has a ton of filler and all the content is spread out so much I never felt compelled to get all the moons whereas anytime I playthrough Mario 64 I always get all the stars. For BoTW , I think it's just preference. I love that and OoT for different reasons. Ocarina is more focused and has better storytelling, but BoTW exploration and gameplay are way more fun. But I'm hoping the next Metroid can make a leap like they did with BoTW to where it feels super fresh but still like the same series at its roots.
I still remember getting this game for Christmas back in 02, hearing that familiar save room jingle as Samus leaped out of her ship in the opening shot gave me chills like no other.
You know how you deal with the Fission Metroids? Power Bomb. It kills them instantly and they do not split into two. I've been playing this game since it first came out and I know this game like the back of my hand.
Gamecube was a graphics beast back in the day, first party games on there looked so good, good enough to pay $100+ for a fucking component cable to properly appreciate it
I remember back in middle school I fell deeply in love with the prime series, it’s so unique and addicting. Thanks gman this video brings back so many happy memories
I remember watching the trailers for Metroid Prime. The game looked so good for its time. As a child, I even had dreams about it, but was never able to actually play it. Probably due to the 2002 crisis in my country. I might pick it up now that the Wii is dirt cheap.
holy shieet, if a game not being "traditional" fps can get a guy who likes complaining about fps games to speak so highly of it, it really has to be a masterpiece
Doubt it’ll come with motion controls so that still makes the wii version superior just like how re4 on the switch removed motion controls from the wii version making it automatically inferior because of it
I played all 3 games nearly back to back in early 2014 when I was barely in my teens and on a massive wii modding spree. 14 year old me was extremely impressed by the entire trilogy. I'm now 21 and this video definitely gave me nostalgia. I should replay them, see if the charm held up. Prime 1 definitely looks as good as I remember.
Never understood all the hate for Hunters... for a DS game its definitely amazing and all the bounty hunters and planets are very interesting to explore.
Metroid on the NES was the game that made me WANT to game. Just seeing it in the Nintendo commercials, something about it drew me to it, and when my uncle finally bought an NES, Metroid was one of the games he bought with it. I was obsessed. Back in the day I played it so much that for years and years I could complete a run in under 2.5 hours and get the "best ending". I think I actually pre-ordered Super Metroid, meaning I went to the game store in the mall and plunked down 50-60$ or whatever months in advance for them to hold a copy for me when it released. I love Metroid, and the Prime series was...well, I love it now, but back then it was difficult to accept the difference between the seemingly perfect side scroller/adventure and a FPS. Nintendo/Retro did a fantastic job, though, and your video has made me start scouring eBay for some copies of the trilogy so I can fire up the ol' emulator and give them a go. Thanks!
The madman finally did it. Also, Fission Metroids die in a single powerbomb, regardless of beam affinity. Looking forward to your Prime 2 review-- one of my all time favorite games
Phrieksho Industries Fuck I wish I knew that lol Also I don’t really get why so many people think prime 2 is the best, I found the alien people (can’t remember their name) real boring and uninteresting apart from their cool tech base and collecting the key things at the end sucked so much more than the artefacts in prime 1
@@-jobrocodwawz-6226 I personally think Prime 2 refined what Prime 1 did well. Feels overall more consistent and I appreciate they didn't go with the usual cliche worlds like fire, jungle, water etc. I agree collecting the sky temple keys sucked. Never liked that aspect of the prime games.
The Platformer Reviewer mm yeah it’s not a bad game and I definitely agree the lack of fire water ice jungle made it unique and I definitely think it’s world aesthetic design is it’s strongest suit, but imo it feels a lot more like an expansion than new game, especially with the fact you start off with so many more upgrades
@@theplatformerreviewer6905 My only complaint with the Sky Temple keys is that you couldn't acquire them through natural exploration (or from memory w/o the dark visor) like you could with the Chozo keys in Prime 1. I'd be just fine, otherwise.
Yeah i find prime 2 much more boring than the others, in combat, exploration, backtracking, item hunting, atmosphere and also bosses. I usually rank it near the bottom of the metroid games, i just can't have fun with it. It's a good game but it's almost like a strange headake for me
Samus doesn't crush herself. She becomes energy and light contained in the middle of the morph ball light. Because E=mc^2. Our brains can't comprehend the tech used to make it possible lol.
It should be said that the fact that this game could be considered the best GameCube game when Resident Evil 4, Wind Waker, and Super Smash Bros. Melee were also on the system should say something.
This game was an instant classic the moment I popped it into my GameCube way back when. One of the all time great First Person games I have ever been exposed to. Its a shame Nintendo didnt let Retro keep riding the train.
The best way to play this is to emulate the GC version. There are some neat things missing in the wii version like Samus' cannon frosting over when charging the ice beam, etc... That said, it's more of a pain in the ass to set up if you want widescreen. Looking forward to your echoes review, that's the best in the series!
I always loved the art direction in this game, the atmosphere. Everything just feels "right". It's also super impressive how they were able to shove all the different gameplay elements into the game while still have a coherent and simple control scheme on the GC controller.
Nice vid man, really Metroid Prime is a great game that's still great now. Really interesting and entertaining, Prime and Prime 2 are my favorites. Review prime 2 next!
Prime 1 is still my personal favorite of the Prime Trilogy. My favorite Metroid game. Period. Looking forward to Prime 2, though. Another great game. In fact, all 3 Prime games are great.
Metroid Prime is such a nostalgic thing for me (as it is for alot of us im sure) I got so engrossed by the lore, the flora and fauna, the music. Everything this game does is brilliant. Truly a masterpiece.
Even to this day, this game is both a technical and gameplay masterpiece, much like Super Metroid. Still waiting for Nintendo to give us a HD Remaster of the Trilogy for the Switch with gyro-aiming while we wait for Metroid Prime 4. EDIT: For the sake of clarity, gyro-aiming should be optional.
I got this idea just now, but it comes from someone doing a RU-vid video using an Oculus VR kit (can bet it'd be way better with Valve Index) with the Dolphin emulator years ago. I don't know the weight of just the Switch screen, but imagine using the Switch Pro controller or even the Joycons individual motion controls with a Switch screen headmount for it to be like VR.
@@Tactical_wulf5.56 I originally played it on the GameCube, finished it a good amount of times there as well. The Zelda-like controls are not a negative for me, all I am implying is that the option of gyro-controls would be a nice addition.
Metroid Prime and it's sequels are a true testament of making a game endearing and timeless by introducing simple, yet effective gameplay with an eerie, alien atmosphere dripping with suspense and tension not seldom seen in today's games.
@@MichaelRichards983 Prime 3 never released on the Gamecube. Metroid Prime 3 came out in 2007 the last game to come out on the Nintendo GameCube was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and if you're going to count officially Nintendo that would be Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess.
Funny thing, I recommended this game for years to a grumpy friend who worships Sony and classic PS1/Ps2 era. Just finished it: turns out he thought the game was "overhyped trash" on every level with a terrible control scheme, repettive gameplay and boring enviroments and music and way too easy all around. He also claims the graphics were overhyped for years with 1 or 2 decent effects at best. Well, he just finished MP 2 Echoes too this past week and claims it is miles better with a much more compelling world layout and gameplay (also he is raving about the soundtrack). He is starting MP 3 Corruption this week, I should brace myself for the shitstorm of "nintendoWiibabygame" complaints. It is beyond me, really.
I actually agree with your friend. For the year this game appeared, there were so much better games in the fps genre that do better, it's just a good 3d adaptation of the metroid saga.
Me personally I love all the Metroid Prime games, it’s one of my favorite trilogies, but to me each Prime just got better and better. I have my gripes with each one and I absolutely HATE the fact you can’t switch beams in MP3 because they combined them all, but nevertheless not a single game is bad and they each improve in their own unique way. Metroid Prime 2: Echos seems to definitely be the most controversial one among fans and I absolutely get why with the whole light & dark world aspect, which yes can absolutely be annoying, but I can’t help but appreciate the concept and I still stand by the fact that I think it’s brilliant level and environmental design. It definitely took inspiration from the Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past, of that I have no doubt in mind because just when you defeat Aghahim the big bad guy and thought the game was over, the game is like nah sike bitch you’re only halfway done as you now enter The Dark world, which is a much darker more twisted version of the world of Hyrule you thought you knew. This in turn allows you to re-explore some of the same locations you’ve already been to that look ENTIRELY different and allow you to discover new areas, new dungeons, and new hidden secrets. MP2 took this same concept but instead allow you to willingly travel back and forth between the light and dark world as much as you please, provided you have the necessary upgrades to survive such a inhospitable environment, and have you put together a complex puzzle of how in the hell you’re supposed to traverse these areas and where you have to be in a certain light or dark section to unlock or access a room. Can it be tedious and annoying, absolutely, but it’s fun, it’s engaging, and it keeps you thinking. Your brain never stops churning, thinking, “how in the fuck do I get over there, where in the unholy hell do I go, Jesus Christ how do I kill this bastard”. MP2 not only immersed me into its world, but it also made me give a shit, it kept me thinking when I came across a difficult puzzle, and it kept me on my toes, all of which I can absolutely appreciate. That said Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is my favorite. I could explain why but I doubt anyone cares to read it. All I’ll say is that with MP3 I’ve never felt so completely immersed in a video game. When I’m playing MP3 with motion controls by pulling levers, flipping switches, touching key cards, or ripping off enemy shields, I legitimately feel like I’m there and it’s fucking awesome.
I've been playing Prime 1 since I was a kid, and I actually agree with your friend that Prime 2 is the better game. I used to be a Metroid Prime 1 fanboy until around last year when I gave Prime 2 a fair shot after finding a Gamecube copy. The world in Prime 2 might not be as colorful as Prime 1, but it's so much more interconnected and better designed for backtracking. Even during my first playthrough of Prime 1, I never liked that when I got to Phendrana Drifts and needed the Space Jump that I had to backtrack through the Magmoor Caverns to the start of the game, just to go all the way back to Phendrana Drifts through the Magmoor Caverns. In Prime 2 though, I can almost guarentee that you can find a direct elevator to the area you need to go to from the current area you're in. It may not be as organic for the world to be designed like this, but it makes for much better pacing that doesn't make me want to put the game down and come back to it later.
It really speaks volumes when someone like me can play this game for the first time nearly 2 decades after it came out and STILL think it was one of the best games of all time
I REALLY hope to GOD that Metroid prime 4 will run on Unreal Engine 4, i saw a fanmade version of Metroid prime 1 on Unreal engine 4, and it would fit so freakin well to the game. BAR NONE.
This game is top shelf quality. Yes!!!! to everything you said about the presentation; I remember being in awe with how the water effects on the helmet HUD dripped down and always loved seeing Samus's face reflecting on the visor after beaming a few enemies in a dark area. It was amazing how a purple lunch box was able to give such a great, smooth experience. I do feel that this game should be experienced at least once with the GameCube controller, i do have the Wii trilogy and though the motion controls do make shooting and aiming better, but the way you select different beam types didn't translate well with the Wii-mote.
When I played this game as a kid, I remember that in the instruction manual there was pictures and descriptions for all the weapons and suits... except for the Phazon Suit. When I got to the part where you unlock it, my young mind was blown!
The thing that pisses me off about Metroid Prime is the fact that I cannot for the life of me get 100% scan data. I somehow always miss ome os two enemies and one or two data logs.. one of these days im gonna get that 100% completion. I have to, after all Metroid Prime is one of my favorite games of all time and it dsserves to be 100%'d
There was nothing that felt better than playing this game with the Gamecube controller on the original system. The way you locked onto enemies and rapidly pushed the fire button felt so perfect.
"Perfectly balanced as all things should be." You sir are a god, best way to end this video ever, and why you're still my favorite reviewer after years of subbing.
I'm the opposite, Super metroid was one of the worst for me, in many aspects apart from music and bosses. It has a slightly different game design and choices that i didn't like overall, like strange linearity, pacing, item hunting and bad control design
Most people never talk about how backtracking works in this game. It's very much one path. Usually when you go to get a power up, you go through one path. Then to get another power up, you have to go back through the same path, then find a new path. That can get very tedious. People might say it is part of the genre. I would say that other games do this better by adding new shortcuts. When you get the powerup, a new shortcut appears. Letting you quickly go from area to area. Super metroid does this and metroid prime 3 sort of does this. But metroid prime 3 wants to be a limear shooter and it shows. With the shortcuts being one way and not two way
The game came out in 2001 man. Back then every adventure game had tedious backtracking. Really hope they bring back the speed booster in Prime 4, running and flying around in 1st person... would also make the backtracking more fun if you can just skate through the map at lightning speed.
At the very least in Prime 1, the areas in Tallon 4 are more open ended. There are multiple paths that can lead yiu to an shortcut that you don't have to travel back in an normal & longer distance. For example. After getting the Plasma Beam in Magmoor Cavern, u think you would travel back to Tallon Overworld & through Phazon Mines in an normal route that you came back from. But in an room in part of Magmoor Cavern where you climb up to get the Plasma Beam, you head to the other path where before heading to an elevator takes you to the back of Phendrana Drift where after u beaten Thardus, there's another breach of path that takes you to the other side of Phazon Mines that leads an shortcut. But the path to it is block. So u have to use an Power Bomb to get across there. It makes traveling alot faster. Granted, you have an option to do whatever you want to go & don't forget that u also have to collect Chozo Artifact to reach to the Impact Crater. In which luckily there optional to get them as long as you get an upgrade that requires you to get the artifacts during your lourney. After getting the Plasma Beam, I always get the rest of the Chozo Artifacts first before heading back to the Phazon Mines & there's only one artifact that I hadn't gotten that requires to upgrade Samus's suit to get it. Which I need an Phazon Suit, which luckily isn't that far away & it's only 3 or 4 rooms back after getting it from Omega Pirate. And after getting the final artifact, I head straight to Impact Crater.
>"Phenandra Drifts" >Screen says "Phendrana Drifts" Lol, joking aside, fantastic video. This game is an all-time favorite of mine. Gamecube was the first console I bought with my own money and Metroid Prime was one of the first games I got for it, and was easily one of the best. I have a lot of love for the entire trilogy, but something about this first game keeps it my favorite. I own all three physical and the Trilogy pack on Wii U, maybe it's time for a revisit in Dolphin, though...
Absolutely one of the best most beautiful games ever made. The entire Metroid Prime series is the best ever. The lore, exploration, and immense details, incredible. I always preferred the GC controls to the wii, but the motion controls change the dynamic of the game in a fun way. I cant wait for Prime 4 of switch .
Definitely one of my favorite games of all time. Great atmosphere and music. Fun addicting exploration gameplay. And a good non intrusive story. Metroid Prime is one of my favorite games ever made and probably my favorite Metroid game right up there with Super. Metroid Prime 4 has some big shoes to fill and I seriously hope that game delivers.
